Good Morning, I received a distressing note the other day from one of the key members of the Trimble County Historical Society. You can find that letter below - please do read. One of the most important reasons the Trimble County GenWeb page ( Trimble County Kentucky ) has been such an excellent resource for so many genealogists is because the Trimble County Historical Society is 'one of kind'. They have transcribed so much data and so many records - all with volunteer efforts - and made so much of this available for FREE to so many - that they have set themselves apart in generosity and true, sincere wishes that all who want to search their family history can and will have access to records in Trimble County. They have also published many, many resource books that researchers can purchase. If your ancestor was from Trimble County, you are indeed most fortunate, thanks to this wonderful organization of fine volunteers. Please read the letter below as to their current plight. If you live in or near the Trimble County area perhaps you can help them. If you don't live nearby, consider a membership because your membership dues help support them as well. I have had the joy of meeting many of these fine people on a visit to the county two summers ago. Violet Jennings, current president of the society met me at the cemetery in Bedford to help me look for relatives. It was utterly amazing to hear her talk about the families buried at the cemetery - she knew them all - who belonged to whom - their ancestors, where they lived, what they did. She was - and is - a wealth of knowledge - as are all the devoted hardworking other volunteers. Did you know they keep Family Files at the library? You can write to one of the members and they will check the family file at the library to see if anything has been collected on your family. I found volumes on some of my lines. They charge so little for look ups and copies - it's still the bargain we all long for! Read on - and if you can help, please, please do! TRIMBLE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY GOES TO A NON-FUNCTION STATUS. When January 1 rolls around the Trimble County Historical Society will go into a non-functioning status due to lack of interest in the history of the county. President Violet Jennings is stepping down along with Secretary Marguerite Miller. There is at this time no one to fill these positions. It seems that most people of the county are not interested in their counties history. There is however a great deal of interest from people of other states. Book sales have been great! However the people of this small community appears to feel quite a bit different. At this point there will not be any dues so I guess that makes anyone interested in the County a member of the Society of which is in a non-functioning status. If you or anyone you know is interested in a leadership role in the Society please contact Violet Jennings at 255-7545 or Marguerite Miller at 502-222-4370. There will be a meeting on December 6, 2003 at 11 am with a dinner following. If you are interested in becoming a member in a leadership capacity please contact us and you are cordially invited to the meeting and dinner. We must know if you wish to come so that we would have enough food. It is a very sad day that this should happen to the Historical Society after over 25 years of work from so many people. We have so many books published, far more than most Societies. We have all census years published from 1850-1920, 6 Heritages Books, plus the Cemetery Book, 1st Court Order Book and others. There is still much to be done and yet no one to help do it!! One or two can't do it alone!! Please don't let this resource fall away! It will be a great loss to us all! Margaret Pecar Fallone
Hi Maggie, Unfortunately I live too far away to volunteer my time but would be happy to volunteer a donation to perhaps fund some help for the ladies. You personally and the Trimble County Historical Society have helped me so much in learning about my Trimble County roots that I would hate to see their efforts ended. Please let me know if I an help. Sincerely, Ken Hixon MFallone@aol.com wrote: >Good Morning, > >I received a distressing note the other day from one of the key members of >the Trimble County Historical Society. Hello Ken, I am so glad to hear that you have been helped in many ways. However, money is not the problem. We just need local people to help in the work such as OFFICER'S of the organization. We need people to type and also transcribe records. Most of all we need local people to take on leadership responsibility. Some of us just can't keep doing what we are doing. Sincerely, Marguerite > Hi Maggie, > > Unfortunately I live too far away to volunteer my time but would be > happy to volunteer a donation to perhaps fund some help for the ladies. > > You personally and the Trimble County Historical Society have helped me > so much in learning about my Trimble County roots that I would hate to > see their efforts ended. Hi Marguerite, if you can mail me copies of stuff, I can type it up. I did that for a church in Delaware and it worked out okay. They sent me copies and I put them on a file my daughter set up on the computer and after I completed them, I e-mailed them to them. They were pretty old records, mid 1800's, and kind of hard to read, but I managed okay. Roslyn -----
I am deeply saddened by this news. Was it a coincidence that Sandi Gorin's Tip #466 dated 6 Nov. 03, was " A Toast to the Late Great Historical Society"? Many of the historical societies across the United States apparently are dead or on their last leg. It is a thought-provoking article. One thing she mentions is lack of interest of young people along with little or no history being taught in the public schools. Recently there have been columns by Karen Claiborne in the Trimble Banner called "Shaking the Family Tree". They are interesting and I hope will continue. I wonder if the new editor of the Banner could be interested in running an article about the plight of the Historical Society and stir up some interest in keeping it going. I deeply regret not having joined years ago, although I was and still am unable to attend meetings. Would it be too late to send membership dues now? Violet Wirth
Hello Violet Wirth and others who are interested, The dues have been $5.00 for a calendar year. We decided to drop the dues. I really don't think that anyone interested is worrying about the $5.00 but money at this time is not really a problem for us but it my be in the future. However we would love to have anyone as members if we can keep this thing going next year. They could decide to add back the membership price but at this time I don't know. The way it has been --all membership receives a copy of our quarterly newsletter. (The dues does not even pay for the cost of the Quarterly's that go out) This quarterly contains many things such as any news we might have and some of the old marriages--some court order transcripts and other old things found in newspapers. We were very luck to have received a copy of a 1909 paper from Lois Reed of Madison. This paper told of all marriages and death in the county in 1908 and some other good things as well. I have been adding a few months at a time in the newsletter from these. You are very correct ---there is no interest in the young people and when I say that, I am talking about most people under 50. Our Society is not connected to Karen Claiborne as she is not a member of the Society but it is a good piece. I hope this answers some people questions. If you have any direct question please email me at margueri@iglou.com Marguerite The same article that came out on this board was also in the Trimble Banner. However the editor of the Roundabout and a reporter from the Madison Courier came and did any interview of Violet and myself for their papers along with pictures showing some of our books. They really did good articles for us. The Roundabout and the Madison Courier both have a much better circulation than the Trimble Banner. We have always listed our meeting in the Banner yet very few ever see them. Some have called now and express the fact that they never new about there being meetings. So people are not really reading the Banner even if they get it. > I am deeply saddened by this news.
