    1. [KYTRIMBLE] Initials after your ancestors' surnames
    2. Susan Jones
    3. Hi List, I got this in an e-mail a long time ago and thought it would be good to pass this along again. I will be posting this to the other lists I am on so I am sorry if you receive this e-mail more than once. Initials after your ancestor's names may provide useful information that you'd not expect. You may come across these when reading old wills or other documents: Sue in Sunny Florida macduff@infi.net a.a.s. died in the year of his/her age (anno setitis suae) (86 y/o (died in year 86) d.s.p. died without issue (decessit sine prole legitima) d.s.p.l. died without legitimate issue (decessit sine prole mascula supesita) d.s.p.m.s. died without surviving male issue (decessit sine prole mascula supersita) d.s.p.s. died without surviving issue (decessit sine prole supersita) d.unm died unmarried d.v.p. died in the lifetime of his father (decessit vita patris) d.v.m. died in the lifetime of his mother (decessit vita matris) Et al and others (et alia) Inst present month (instans) Liber book or volume Nepos grandson Nunc Nuncapative will, an oral will, written by a witness Ob he/she died (obit) Relict widow or widower (relicta/relictus) Sic so or thus, exact copy as written Testes witnesses Utl late (ultimo) Ux or vs wife (uxor) Viz namely (videlicet)

    3. The Kentucky Birth Index online is a wonderful tool to have, but I have a lot of trouble getting to it and others say they have been unable to access it. I don't know what problem others have, but the problem I get is as soon as I get the page I want, it is replaced by another page saying that it is unable to display my page. I believe these are error messages caused by advertisements that are failing to load properly, so to get to where I want I have to either hit BACK to go back to the page I wanted and I have to hit ESC to stop it from trying to load the advertisement that causes the failure message. If you cannot get to it I really can't help you. I can't be at your computer and see what it is that is preventing you from getting access, I can only tell you what works for me. The url has recently changed. To get to it now I go here: http://www.vitalsearch-ca.com/gen/ky/_vitals/kybirths.htm and click ESC to stop further internet loading and prevent the error page from coming up Then I click where it says Searchers Enter Here and on the next page I click on "BEGIN" down in the lower right corner before another error page pops up and that gets me the search form. Sometimes an error page appears and I hit BACK then ESC to stop that error from popping up again, and I hit the BEGIN in the lower right to get to the form. I don't know the current status of proposed legislation that would affect the availability of Kentucky Vital Statistics. I wrote my legislator in opposition to any change that would make the information unavailable. 2. Earl Coleman
    3. This message concerns Daniel Coleman, born July 26, 1794, Prince Edward Co., Va who married Margaret "Polly" Durham on Dec 24, 1822 in Casey Co., Ky. The Durham family file in the Casey Co., Ky library contains a family group sheet on Daniel and Polly Coleman. This family group sheet lists the parents of Daniel Coleman as Samuel Coleman and Milly Coffey. There was no mention of who supplied this information. I have two books titled "The Coleman family of Mobjack Bay, Va". The latest book being published by Sherrianne Coleman Nicol in 1998. Both of these books lists the parents of Daniel Coleman as Stephen Coleman and Mary Foree of Henry Co., Ky. Jane Coleman and David Milton Durham, Mary Coleman and John Matthew Hatter, Samuel Coleman and Milly Coffey were all in Lincoln (Casey) Co., around 1800. There is a possibility that Daniel is a son of Samuel and Milly. To change this family make-up, all we need is supporting documents. If any of the Durham or Coleman researchers has any information, deeds, wills, birth or death records, or newspaper articles that would support who his parents are, we would appreciate hearing from you. Thank you, Earl

    3. Dear Listers, I knew there was some reason I wanted to be on your list besides my search for Samuel Pryor, ca 1804. Here it is: My 1951 Navy buddy from Kansas (Donald D. Hilton) once mentioned that part of his family came from Trimble Co., KY. Lately, he sent me articles about them and a genealogy. His family were the Trimbles, and their genealogy goes back to 1732 in Armagh in North Ireland to five brothers. They were Presbyterians who went first to Baltimore, MD, the VA, WVA, Montgomery Co., KY, and Mt Sterling, KY (by 1814) and eventually to Kansas in more modern times. Also there is a copy of a long story, "Recollections of Breathitt" by J. Green Trimble at the age of 91, and an interview with JGT in 1917 in a magazine. I don't know who really owns the materials and the genealogy. They seem to be old enough to copy without fear of lawsuits. I am willing to make them available to the Trimble Co. Hist Society with Don Hilton's permission, which I am sure he will give. Thomas S. Fiske Arcadia, CA Author of Four on the Floor, The Courage Place, A Time to Heal & A Time to Judge

    3. Dear Listers, Thanks to many of you who replied to my email about Sam Pryor who died in 1833. He was buried in Henry Co., but it became Trimble Co. later. He's still there. I checked and rechecked my resources and found I made a mistake. The most likely county he was sheriff of, was Henry Co., and that was before part of it became Trimble Co. I am already on the Henry County list and will ask about its old records. Tom the bewildered.

    3. My aunt Gladys Ball Dein died the 15th of February at Jewish Hospital. She was in her ninety-second year and had been an invalid for many years. She was born on a farm in Trimble County and never forgot her family and friends there. She had two sons and two daughters. One son, Joseph Colbert Dein passed on several years ago at the age of 47. She was laid to rest beside him in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville. She was the last of four daughters of Nathaniel Stark Ball and Pearl Mae Colbert. Her three sisters; Beulah Ruth Ball Neher, Ruby Virginia Ball Baker-Decker, and Hazel Jewell Ball Mills, and two of her three brothers; Joseph Clark Ball and Herman Clifton Ball, had gone on before, leaving only one brother surviving of the seven siblings. 3. Thomas, We want to thank you for sharing the information on Samuel Pryor and his family. My ancestor James Underwood had some dealings with Samuel Pryor. This gives us some background showing us the type of neighbors and friends that my family had. This indicates to us that they were very involved in the legal and political happenings of the time. James lived in the Corn Creek area, of what eventually became Trimble Counlty. We believe that James lived in three different counties, Gallatin, Henry and Trimble, without moving. Thanks again, Rea and Woody Burnett

    3. Dear R&W, It seems to me that Henry Co., was carved off Trimble Co. In the days of Samuel Pryor's Sheriff-ship, perhaps Trimble Co was much larger than it is today. Am I correct about his or was Henry Co. formed before 1820? I have ancestors from Owen Co, too, and it was formed about 1819. 1. [KYTRIMBLE] Sheriff Samuel Pryor, d. 1833
    2. Thomas Fiske
    3. Dear Listers, I was foraging through the search engine, Google, when I came across your address and signed up. I am a descendant of Samuel Pryor, twice Sheriff of Trimble Co. He is buried in Trimble ca 1833 and his grave still can be found, I am told. Samuel left five children, the oldest of which was William Samuel Pryor, who became chief justice KY's Supremes for many years, and who was the longest serving member of that court. Samuel's widow, Ann Marshall Samuell, was one of the VA Clarks and a cousin to U.S. Justice John Marshall. She remarried Joseph Barbour, another lawyer who became a judge. Clearly, this family did not know how to plow. When Samuel Pryor died in Trimble at the a very young age, he had time to write a lengthy will, naming his brother, Jack Pryor, as executor. I have often wondered if Samuel's death was helped along by a shooter. In other words, whether Samuel was shot in pursuit of his duties as sheriff. In order to find the cause of Samuel's death, I would have to find historical data, such as an old newspaper clipping, or a footnote in a history book from the 1833 era. If anyone could direct me in that task, I would certainly appreciate the help. Tom (whose mother was a Pryor from Henry Co.) Thomas S. 3. USING CENSUS TO ESTABLISH BIRTH DATES Can you figure out when a person was born by going through Census Records? The answer is that you can narrow it down to a certain number of years, such as 1774-5. Begin with the 1790 census and go through the 1830 Census, then "Decipher" what you have found. 1790 census under age 16 b. 1774-1790 (16 year time span) 1800 census age 16-25 b. 1774-1784 (10 year time span) 1810 census age 26-45 b. 1765-1784 (19 year time span) 1820 census age 45 & over b 1775 or before. 1830 census age 50 -60 b. 1770-1780 (10 year time span) By the 1790 census, he could not have been born before 1774. By the 1830 census, he could not have been born after 1780. You now have a set of POSSIBLE birth years for your ancestor: 1774 to 1780. But let's see if we can narrow it down further. You already know that his first child was born in 1799. That he married ca 1798. The one thing you don't kndow is how old he was when he married; the usual standard used in research is four generations to a hundred years, and that means marriage at age 25 for men. To play it on the safe side, I always figure two dates, marriage at age 20 and marriage at age 25-that way you get another set of dates to work from. Here you have a man who married about 1798. Deduct 25 (his age) and you come up with the year 1773. Now deduct his age at 20 and you have 1778. So he was born between the years 1773 and 1778, using this method. Now referring to the set of birth years derived from the census records you see two things. He couldn't have been born before 1773 (1790) census nor was he born after 1775 (1820) census. You now have a new SET of possible birth years for your ancestor - 1774-1775-AND you have narrowed the time span down to two years. It is much easier to search a two year supply of vital records than a 16 year one. ---Taken from Southern Echoes, Augusta Genealogical Society as printed in Tri-State Trader, 28 October 1985, via The Genealogical Society of Stanislaus County, CA Inc. Newsletter, Vol. 6, #11. REALLY IN VIRGINIA?: Did you know that any reference made to a person's having been born or lived in Virginia as early as 1728 and as late as 1863 could indicate he was born or lived in any part of: ILLINOIS FROM 1781 TO 1818 STATEHOOD; INDIANA from 1787 to 1816 Statehood, KENTUCKY from 1775 to 1792 Statehood, MARYLAND from 1775 to 1792 statehood: NORTH CAROLINA from 1728 to 1779 statehood, OHIO from 1778 to 1803 statehood, PENNSYLVANIA from 1752 to 1786 statehood, TENNESSEE from 1760 to 1803 statehood, WEST VIRGINIA from 1769 to 1863 statehood.

    3. Thanks Georgia, I've got all the information on my family, thanks to a cousin who spent thirty years on it. It's a lot easier for us, too, because most of the family stayed in Kentucky for about two hundred years. But as just about anyone interested in this kind of thing knows, there's never enough information and no detail is too small or uninteresting. I was told recently about the weather on the day my grandmother was buried and it meant a great deal to me. Thank you anyway. Lauren ----- Original Message ----- From: "Georgia D. 3. Hi Georgia, I hope I'm not intruding, but I couldn't pass up this opportunity to see if there is a connection. I recently moved and can't find the paperwork on my family, but I'm quite sure my first American ancestor was Robert Coleman. He was thought to have been born in England around 1630-40. He settled in Mobjack Bay, Virginia and married Elizabeth Grizzell. I will do my best to locate all my paperwork and relay additional information. I believe John and Elizabeth had a son, Benjamin, and I descend from his line. Know that they lived in King and Queen and Culpepper Counties in Virginia until Dennis Mahoney moved to Trimble County in the 1700s, where they have remained to this day. 2. Georgia D. Helderlein
    3. Hi Lauren Rose: I have read a lot of the early Coleman Family, but haven't recorded any of it, but what I sent in. A lot of the Duncan, Connell and Coleman families left Culpeper Co. VA and moved to KY ca 1797, stopping at Bourbon Co., KY first for some 3 years, then on to Gallatin and Henry Co. KY. You might get some help from someone on the Trimble List, as there are many that are on the Coleman family. DUNCAN is my main line there. Sorry I can't be of more help. Sincerely, GEORGIA ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lauren Rose" <lrhillside@tds.net> To: <KYTRIMBL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 18, 2002 2:32 PM Subject: Re: [KYTRIMBLE] THE COLEMAN FAMILY - by Roger Thomas Coleman > Hi Georgia, > > I hope I'm not intruding, but I couldn't pass up this opportunity to see if > there is a connection. > > I recently moved and can't find the paperwork on my family, but I'm quite > sure my first American ancestor was Robert Coleman. Please tell me if you think my reading of this is correct. The above information appears to show the Catherine ? who married Wyatt Coleman. I believe she is the second wife of the Wyatt Coleman who married Cynthia Connell. Cynthia died in 1826 and I have children, Franklin, Larkin and Benoni, born of Wyatt and Catherine after the death of Cynthia in 1826. The son Franklin is my connection to this family as he married Virginia 'Jennie' Mayfield. Nancy Green
