He was educated at Cumberland College, Princeton, Ky., and after completing his literary education, decided upon the law as his profession and in 1845 began to read law in the office of Judge Collin D. BRADLEY, and in 1846 was admitted to practice. Shortly afterward he moved to Madisonville, where he opened an office and has since been engaged in the active practice of law. He soon worked his way to prominence at the bar and in 1851 was elected County Attorney for four years and was again elected in 1863. Mr. WADDILL is a man of pronounced political views and identified himself with the Republican party at its formation and is still an ardent member of that party. As a lawyer, he ranks deservedly high. He has always been an indefatigable worker and his researches into the various branches of the law have been as extensive perhaps as those of any lawyer in this end of the State. For the past twenty years, he has b! een senior member of the firm of WADDILL & PRATT, which stood high and commanded a lucrative practice. Mr. PRATT's election to the Circuit judgeship made a dissolution necessary, whereupon a partnership was formed between Mr. WADDILL and Hon. T.J. NUNN, late of Marion, under the firm name of WADDILL & NUNN. Mr. WADDILL is a leading member of the Christian church, having been a deacon since 1851 and commands the respect of all for his upright, christian walk of life. Mr. WADDILL has been twice married, first to Miss Sarah E. RAY in 1851, and second to Miss Maria PRATT, in 1865. He has three children, one daughter, now Mrs. C.J. PRATT, by his first wife, and two sons, Otway and Clifton, by his second wife. The former is cashier of the Hopkins County Bank and the latter is County Attorney of Hopkins county. Surnames: DIXON, PARKS, PITTS, DEMPSEY, HARRIS, WILSON, MILLER, SKINNER Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hBB.2ACE/345.563 Message Board Post: I am a descendant of James Dixon through his son Hiram and his wife Sarah Wilson and their son Hiram and his wife Nancy Pitts and their daughter Martha M. and her husband William Parks and their son Emil Parks and his wife Florence Miller, my grand parents. Some time around the early 1880's, William and Martha M. Parks, adopted or took in, Joseph Elmer Skinner, b. abt 1876, MO. and raised him to manhood. Joseph took the name of Parks. Joseph was the son of Andrew J. Skinner and Martha A. Dixon, b. 1857 MO, Some researchers think that Martha M. Dixon and Martha A. Dixon are the same person and she was married to Andrew Skinner, but I have found proof that this is not true. They both are listed in the 1880 census with their husbands and families in Hickory Co. MO and I found Martha A. Dixon as the daughter of John Dixon and Julia Harris along with her siblings; Hiram, b. 1847, MO, Henry L.G., b. 1850, Meekin (male), b. 1851, MO, Laura, b. 1852, MO and Benjamin, b. 1858, MO. Now, what I believe (no proof) is that these two were cousins and becouse they had the same name and were born very close together that they were close and that is why Martha M Parks raised Joseph. I also believe (no proof) that John Dixon Father of Martha A Dixon could be the son of James Dixon and Jenny Dempsey. I also believe that Julia Harris was most likely not John Dixon's first wife becouse she was 20 years younger than him. Can anyone help me with this ???
F Y I A REALLY BIG THANK YOU to all those involved in the sorting, filing and indexing of the the old circuit court records of Caldwell County. Those involved were Ruth Nichols, Emma Lou (Coleman) Tabor, and others. Also, Glenn Martin, the man who stayed practially every day for a year and volunteered a lot of quality time to this project!! Glenn Martin, who is the founder and mainstay of the Railroad Museum in Princeton, has worked extensively on saving the old records of Caldwell County, along with greeting people at the Railroad Museum. A big THANK YOU also must go to Joann Newsom, Caldwell Circuit Court Clerk, for purchasing filing cabinets to hold them. The Circuit Court records are sorted, filed and indexed by year and alphabetically . The are now accesible to the public. You will have to go to the Circuit Court Clerks Office on the East Side of the Court Square in Princeton. The records are in an upstairs room, accessible only by a stairway. These records contain, lawsuits, land grants, divorces, murder trials, etc. I personnally saw one land grant for acreage "between the rivers", dated 1798. Cant remember the details though.
