Web site: marriages, cemeteries NOTES: Allen came to Christian Co., now Trigg, from Bertie, NC, with his mother and cousin, Joshua Sholar, at age 11 in 1806, and settled in the extreme eastern end of the Donaldson valley. History of Trigg Co., Canton & Linton Precincts gives Allan Showler as one of the earliest settlers with a home in the precinct prior to 1812. There is a picture of his log home in the bk., & a plaque has been placed where it stood. In the name of Allen 22 acres at the head of Donaldson Creek was acquired from James Lindsey, according to Christian Co. Family Histories. KY Land Grants indicate that Allen Shoulders obtained a land grant south of Green River of 200 A., located in Christian Co. on Donelson Creek and surveyed by James Lindsey on 18 May 1804 [Bk. 19, p. 148]. Another source gives July 1803, Cert. #1390, 200 A. on Dollastons Creek. The records show Allen rec'd a land grant assignment of 200 A 21 Nov. 1810 from James Lindsey on Dollason Cr. He was 18 at the time & prob. had sold land inherited from his father so was able to make the purchase. Allen was assigned land 17 Aug. 1816 by Cert. #6207. Ky Land Warrants - Allen Shoulders, 50 A., Dk. M, p. 38, surveyed 27 Feb. 1823 & Allen Shoaler, 50 A., Dk. P, p. 352, Trigg Co., Dollasons Creek. Christian Co. tax records show Allen with 200 A on "Dollison Cr." 1811, 1812, 1813, 1819 & the Trigg records continue 1820, 1821, 1822. By 1841 he was taxed on almost 1000 A. Allen is shown as a voter at Cadiz Prec. 1826, at Burnett's Prec. 1829, election of Congress at Canton 1841 & Cadiz 1842. He was twice appointed surveyor, once for the road from Lindsey's Mill to Boyd's Landing. Other Trigg records show Allen in connection with the marr. of daus. & various activities in early Trigg Co. The Record Bk. for Donaldson Cr. Church [Baptist] show that he joined in Apr. 1814, the day it was organized. [Jemima is not listed but her parents are.] His name is on the plaque outside the church. Burial for both Allen & Jemima is the James Thomas Cem. 50 yds. W of the original Cullen Thomas homesite, S side of Donaldson Cr. His death is recorded in the Vital Statistics in Ky. Historical Assoc. Lib. in Frankfort: "died at 59 yrs. in 1853 in Trigg, born in NC, parent Benjamin Sholar". Lancaster says in her report in Tree Builders, v. XIX, Iss. 2, June 1998 that his cause of death according to the vital statistic record was due to "use amount spirits". [History of Trigg states "In the year 1811 James Thomas & Shadrach Futrell erected a distillery on the land of Allen Showler, which they orperated with fair success for a period of 6 or 7 yrs. This was one of the 1st distilleries in the co., & early achieved & the reputation of turning out the very finest quality of whisky."] Allen's will was written 16 Jan. 1852, recorded Trigg Co. Will Bk. D, p. 251, prob. 14 Mar 1853. Jemima was born on her father's plantation in the Tyancoca Swamp community, Edgecombe Co., NC. She was 9 yrs. old when the family came to KY. Records indicate that they left for TN by the early part of 1803, though they are said to have migrated to KY in 1804. They settled on the N side of Beechy Fork Creek in Christian, later Trigg, Co. Drewery Bridges gave consent for his dau.'s marriage on 19 Oct. 1812. Jemima's father left no will but at least 2 tracts of land came to Jemima & her sister & their spouses because a transfer of deeds recorded in Trigg show these tracts as being sold to Jemima's bro., William. The inventory & sale of Jemima's property is recorded in Trigg Co. Inventories, Appraisements & Sale Bills #1, p. 269. Children:

    1. [KYTRIGG] Cemeteries in Trigg County
    2. Does anyone know if there is a place on-line to check on gravesites in Trigg Co.? I have been going through the Todd Co. on-line lists with some success, but can't find my g-grandfather and g-grandmother there, so they may well be buried in Trigg Co. (especially as they lived in the Russellville area). Here is my line: Warner A. Hughes 1814-?/married Sep. 5, 1852 to Georgette (Kate?) Matthew L. Hughes b. Nov. 25, 1859 died Jul 29, 1935 married to Minnie Grubbs Cleavinger, b. Mar. 23, 1866 d. July 19, 1933 The daughter of Matthew and Minnie was my grandmother, Mabel Claire, and I know where she is buried (Rosedale Cemetery, Pembroke). Any help will be appreciated! Jan Daily

    2. Betty, I agree with Tim. Please do not unsubscribe. I enjoy the information you share with the list. My comments were in support of Bev and not ment to offend you or anyone else on the list. We do need to Wake-Up as Tim has suggested. I have been asleep myself. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I do hope both you and Bev will remain active contributors to our list.

    3. I'm in the middle of a wonderful dream right now. I'm sitting in a big rocker on the front porch of the "Old Genealogist Home". It's a crisp winter morning so I'm wrapped in my MamMaw's quilt. I've got a cup of my PawPaw's stout coffee. Coming across the river on his ferry is my gg-granddaddy, John P Meredith, along with his ferry hand and son Albert Dillard Meredith. John and Albert are singing wonderful Irish songs. I know this because my granddaddy, William Barnell Meredith, could sing "Danny Boy' and make you weep. People who grew up with my daddy, Robert Phillip Meredith, have told me they heard it themselves. By the time I was old enough to hear or remember, my granddaddy had lost his voice to throat cancer. But in my dream they're all talking and singing. Now you see, John Meredith, was born in Trigg County somewhere between 1817 & 1830. He must not have communicated himself to the census takers very well since they have him listed as 36 on the 1860 Trigg Census, 40 on the 1870 Trigg census and 63 on the 1880 Trigg Census. John and his lovely wife, Martha Jane Johnson who was born in Ky around 1835, had all there children in Trigg county. There was about 6 of them younguns. First there was S.V. - a boy born around 1850. Midda A came next. She was born around 1852. John T. arrived to the Trigg area in 1856. He was followed by James M in 1858. Now my ggranddaddy was born April 4th 1862 and a handsome devil he was or so I'm told. Faella was the last of the known children. She was born around 1868. But on the 1880 census they have her spot on the form filled in as R.N.P. Now my ggranddaddy, Albert Dillard, decided he'd move around a little bit. In 1900 him and his beautiful bride, Isabella Margaret Dunaway, and their family stayed a bit in Stewart County TN since it wasn't too far from the home folks. They had a whole passel of youguns to keep up with. There was Dora, Harry, Nancy, Cenie, William Barnell, Sally, Margaret, Grace, Frederick, and Francis Edward. Well, back to my dream. Like I said, I'm snuggled all up on the porch watching the ferry with all my kinfolk coming to visit. Inside by the big fire in the library room, my fellow researchers are relaxing reading their favorite "History of ..." books. By their side in their notebooks full of family group sheets. Jan is cooking up a recipe from that little book of her grandmothers. Life is so goooooood!! Till next time, Barb in Georgia

    1. [KYTRIGG] Re: Chat room vs genealogical exchange
    2. I am not now nor have I ever been strictly a dates and places kinda person. I also wonder how my ancestors lived, why the lived there, things that took place while they lived there and so on. As the list owner, I want this to be a friendly list where information and ideas are exchanged. I have posted several descendant charts and questioned information that was posted by a couple of others. However, there is only about 4 to 5 people on this list that is posting any information at all. WE ARE A DEAD LIST. I would like for us to become more active and enthusiastic about our family history. Instead of complaining about what the others are doing....I posted the List rules on Sunday, Jan 23, 2000. this is who the list WILL be run. I hate to see anyone unsubscribe, but if that is what you feel you need to do, then I cannot stand in your way, now can I???? My question is, do you know the people that you are sharing information with??? Most of them are distant cousins, have you made that connection with them yet??? Can you name 10 other people that are on this list??? know the people that you are working with....know the people that well be in that "Old Genealogist Home" with you. We can have fun and gather information at the same time!!!!! Timothy C. 1. [KYTRIGG] Chat room vs genealogical exchange
    2. I agree with Bev Cooke's posting of January 27, 2000. I also agree with Tim - looks like all the genealogist are asleep. Tim seem to be the only one posting his ancestors data. Maybe all the rest have moved on to the genealogist old folks home or a more productive mailing list.

    3. Mercy me, Tim ole boy...that Old Genealogists Home has taken off on wings of its own until it is about past remembering what all IS there. Goodness me, let me think...well for starters it is nestled on a bank overlooking the Tennessee River and surrounded by all kinds of southern fauna and flora...there are magnolias and willows and wisteria and rose arbors and dogwood and redbud. There is a barn for the horses that pull our sleighs in winter and our buggies in summer...we like to get out and just meander ya know. There is a little chapel in the garden, and also a nice little pond with a waterfall. There is a vegetable garden and we can bring our pets. There are wrap around porches with no end to rockin chairs and porch swings. Inside we have a great room with a big old fireplace for gathering to have singins, or play games, or eat the big fine country cooking we have every single day (NO health food, nada). We have a sewing and quilting room for folks into that, an art studio, Walker and Ira have a model train room wherein they play in their outfits just like real engineers, a music room, and a library for all our family files and gedcoms.....well you get the picture....everybody's dream just keeps adding on to it and it has turned into a regular paradise.... Tim is the lawn boy and general all round gopher! LOL!!!!! But he is just an oldster in training, he gets to move on up in status when he gets some age on him. jan John 3:16 Future Resident of the Old Genealogists Home, best kept secret in America Listowner: [email protected] [email protected] Listowner: [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]>; <[email protected]>; <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, January 27, 2000 12:25 AM Subject: WAKE UP !!!!!! > Wake up people....we are kinda dead here. we need some info > flowing....how about lets just get anything going???? > Over on the STEWART, DICKSON and on the Afternoon Rocking list, we are > designing a retirement home for us genealogists. if you guys could build > your utopian home??? what you be there?? what would it look like??? just > spill some random thoughts, it will be fun!!!!!! > > Jan or Cher, can you fill us in on what we have already at our "home"???? or > just help me out with a description, you guys are such better writers than i > am > > > Timothy C.
