I too would be very interested in this family. I have an Emily "Shepard" that was born in Logan County about 1838 who married James/Jack McCarter and had the following children: Lee Ella McCarter (b. 1869 and married James Thurston Chapman, Jr.), Sarah Eliza "Sallie" McCarter (b. 4 Oct 1870 in Todd County, KY - never married), and William A. McCarter (b. about 1873 and married a woman named Susan. There is also a marriage for an Emily Shepherd that married a Robert McCarter in Montgomery County, TN in 1861. It may be that my Emily Shepherd was married before to a young man that died in the Civil War and then remarried one of his relatives.
