Led a particularly wild bunch of MacGregors after the Campbells meddled in the clan succession. This band came to be known as the "Children of the Mist" (not the whole clan, as widely thought), and Ladassach's descendants took that nickname for their branch. "The ringleader of all the most recalcitrant Gregarch of his time, doubtless as the righteous heir to the MacGregor. Starved of land they nearly exterminated the clan MacLaren and overran their lands in Balquhidder (1543-1558). In 1532 they slew the minister because of an argument with the MacLarens about who should go into church first. These wild Gregarach were called The Children of the Mist." She was born in Achtriochtan, Glencoe, Scotland. Notes for PATRICK MACGREGOR: Called "Aberach" like his father, Patrick was the third chieftain of the Children of the Mist, and is an ancestor of the 23rd Chief of Clan Gregor, Sir Gregor MacGregor of MacGregor, Bt. (Ret.), who now lives in Newtyle, Angus, Scotland. While this is the family line of the present-day Chiefs of Clan Gregor, who are descended from Patrick's elder son Iain, however in Patrick's time the Chiefs were of another line, based in Glenstrae. Mississippi author (and McGehee cousin) Stark Young led some McGehee descendants to believe their ancestor was not Patrick Aberach but Patrick Roy of Glenstrae, who was the Clan Chief during Montrose's campaign. This cannot be the case because Patrick Roy's son James succeeded as Chief in due time, and was too young to have been out with Montrose. In the 1640s when King Charles was fighting for his throne (and, as it turned out, his life) against the English Parliamentarians and Scottish Covenanters, Clan Gregor rallied with other Highland clans for the King under the command of James Graham, 1st Marquis of Montrose. The MacGregors, including Patrick Aberach and his son James, were led by their Chief, Patrick Roy, who was a distant cousin of Patrick Aberach. Montrose was so impressed with the MacGregors' valor that he promised on the King's behalf that, upon victory, the clan's name (proscribed in 1603) and lands (taken by the Campbells over a number of years) would be restored. The promise died with the King in 1649, and although the MacGregors' name was finally restored in 1775, their lands never were. Longstanding McGehee legend identifies Thomas MackGehee (d. 1724) as having been born James MacGregor son of Patrick MacGregor, but more recent findings indicate that if any McGehee ancestor was born in Scotland it was Thomas' likely father, recorded in Virginia records as William MackGahye. Some McGehees have believed that our ancestor is the same James MacGregor who signed an oath of allegiance in Virginia in 1652, but this James is known to have lived out his days in Maryland under his own name. However, the James of the oath is of unknown origin, so the James MacGregor legend remains alive. Notes for WILLIAM MACKGAHYE: Born in Scotland, presumably in 1618 (see below). Arrived in Virginia by 1653; was listed in that year as a headright on a grant of 1,000 acres to William Hoccaday of York County, VA. "Headright" means that his passage to the colony was paid by Hoccaday, who as a result received a set amount additional acres on his land grant for each such immigrant. Most persons who immigrated in this manner repaid their fare by indentured servitude. In 1658 William MackGahye testified in a court case in York County, giving his age as "about forty." There is no certain information about William's marriage if any, nor conclusively identifying him as the father of Thomas and William MackGehee (q.v.), but the proximity in time, place, and surname are highly persuasive. While I was at the Library today helping my wife, Josephine, get ready for a meeting of the Genealogy Club tomorrow, I found a book sitting out on one of the tables in the Genealogy and Local History Room: The Original Lists of Persons of Quality, Emigrants; Religious Exiles; Political Rebels; Serving Men Sold for a Term of Years; Apprentices; Children Stolen; Maidens Pressed; and others who went from Great Britain to the American Plantations 1600-1700, Edited by John Camden Hotten, Genealogical Publishing Co., 1980. I had never gone through it, and I found, on p. 504, from the Parish Register of St. James Parish, Virginia, on 20 Dec 1679: Servants Land Negros "MACKGERRY WILLIAM pore | ..... | ....1 | ....." I don't know what the "1" under Land means, but most entries had much more, which would correspond to William's having been an indentured servant to pay for his transportation. This spelling of "Mackgahaye" is reasonable when you consider how a non-genealogist might interpret the 17th Century handwriting and spelling! [I've seen worse: On the 1870 census of Hancock County, MS, my gg grandfather's name was taken to be "MacGerher" - I only found him when I read the entire census! I interpret the spelling as "Meegeehee"]. Also, the date and area agree with where we find both Thomas and William MackGehee. Just another little "bit" of information. Notes for ANN BASTROP: Thomas' wife is widely reported as Mary Mumford, but records indicate Mary was instead the mother-in-law of Thomas' son Edward. This leaves Ann Bastrop (Baytop?) by default. ("Dan") Megehee, Jr.: Were there 2 William MackGehees in Virginia in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, or was there only one? The first argument that there were 2 was the baptism date for William, son of Thomas, as 10 Oct 1689, coupled with William, the Quaker, having sons who got married in 1721 & 1722 ... Even if William, son of Thomas was 10 when baptized, that still doesn't quite fit, especially when one considers that Catherine, who MUST HAVE BEEN a daughter of William, was married on 20 May 1713 !!! My wife, Josephine, just found an additional bit of information that, as far as I am concerned, conclusively proves that there MUST HAVE BEEN two Williams. She was completing an application for a prospective member of her Colonial Dames of the XVII Century Chapter, she was reviewing the qualifications, found the following: "For Virginia only, the "Quit Rent Roll of 1704," which proves the settler to have owned the land at least 7 years before 1704, is acceptable." This means that William, the Quaker MUST HAVE OWNED LAND in Virginia by 1697, since he paid the Quick Rent on 131 « acres in New Kent County, VA.
