My brickwall is the Davis line.I have a Martha Davis that married Hiram Romine and can't seem to find any info on them or her family.Anyone have aDavis line that connects to a Romine and Driver line?
The major brick wall in my search is Willliam H. Keeling, born between 1770 and 1780, I have no idea where. I know that he was married and had children BEFORE he married my 2Xgreat grandmother, as shown below. (wife #2) married Feb. 17, 1830 in Todd Co. KY to Catherine M. GRUMBLEY, b. VA abt. 1802. She was the dghtr of John S. GRUMBLEY and Esther TWITCHETT, of Rockingham Co. VA, who were married 10/23/1801. William appears in the 1820 Todd Co. KY census, which unfortunately lists no names but his own as head of household. Therefore we have no name for his then wife or any of his children by that marriage. I am casting a wide net here, posting again to six KY counties and one Tennessee county that I know has KEELINGs living there. If there was a KEELING family bible, it must have gone to a child from the first marriage, because no child of the second marriage had one. Happy New Year to all. Janet Keeling Daily

Joe: It's Elkton. All the ancestors I have in that census of Todd County live in that "township", and I know that their farmsteads were outside of Elkton. re: is there a John L. Mauzy or any Mauzy on the 1880 Todd County Census (posted by Sigrah@aol.com): I show 3 Mauzy's on the census for 1880; living with a family of William Schinick and wife Mary Schinick. The 3 Mauzy's are listed as: Ellie Mauzy, niece, born 1874; Arthor Mauzy, son born 1876; Estell Mauzy, niece, born 1876. Allensville District, Todd County, KY FHL Film 1254442, National Archives Film T9-0442, page 107D William Schinick lists his place of birth as Maryland. His wife Mary was born in Kentucky and all 3 Mauzy's are listed as being born in Kentucky. My guess is that Arthor, noted as son, must be Mary Mauzy's son from a previous marriage. Searching the state of Kentucky I found no John Mauzy, J. L. Mauzy or J Mauzy or L Mauzy using spelling variations of Mauzy, Mauzey or Mauzie. There are the following Mauzy's listed on the 1880 census, white males: Wesley, b. 1840 William H., b. 1846 Rufus, b. 1859 Walker, b. 1862 Melton, b. 1864 Elijah, b. 1866 Jesse W, b. 1871 Everett S., b. 1873 Arthor, b. 1876 Elvis R., b 1876 Ziba Lu, 1876 Samuel K., b. 1879 Please note my source is the 1880 U.S. Census transcribed by the LDS Family History Library Sherry _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com

Thanks to everyone who answered my previous query. I received some concrete facts which brings up more questions. Hope someone can help me with my puzzle. West Dandridge Hurt (1765) died ca 1816 in Todd Co., Ky. He was married twice according to many peoples records. First to Lucy Shelton (1768). Her parents were John Shelton (1722) and Elizabeth Lawson. Grandparents: Ralph Shelton (1685) & Mary Crisp/Chrispan. #2 wife was Katherine Shelton (1749). Her parents: Ralph Shelton (1709) & Mary Daniel. Grandparents: Ralph Shelton (1685) & Mary Crisp/Chrispan. My questions: 1. Katherine would have been 16 yrs older than him. Was that common in that era? 2. If West died in 1816 his youngest would have been ca 10yrs. Lucy would have been ca 38 at time of birth. Would it have been possible for Lucy to die, West remarry & die in that short a time. Katherine remarried. What would have happened to these young children? Sorry to be so long. Nina Williams

Hello, My ggggrandfather, West Dandridge Hurt, married Lucy Shelton on 17 May 1790 in VA. Sometime after Lucy's death he married Katherine Shelton. West Dandridge died in 1816 in Todd County. I can't find his burial site. Anyway, I would like to know if these two ladies are sisters, cousins or what. Also did they die in Todd County and when. Know very little of Lucy and nothing of Katherine. I need help! Nina - WA
Hello Listers, Am seeking information on Polly Starks Edwards born ca 1780 in VA and died before 1847 in Todd County. Her husband was Thomas Edwards. Any help would be appreciated. Nina - WA

Surnames: Stokes, Young ?, Hopkins, Sisk, Howell, Anderson, Robbins, Johnson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/gBB.2ACE/1077 Message Board Post: Here is what I know with some certainty from the personal experiences of my father, Jack Tilden Stokes (born 1923). Perhaps others can fill in the blanks. My second great grandfather was Riley Stokes, who was married to a woman named Eliza P Howell. My father recalls conversations with his grandparents (Zeno Tilden Stokes and Effie May Anderson) about Riley and Eliza, who lived in various parts of Hopkins County, Kentucky, including the cities of Earlington, Dawson Springs, and Morton’s Gap. According to letters written by Lula Pearl Beshears Ward (who was the daughter of Julia Roselyn Stokes and Nathaniel Beshears; and who married John Andrew Ward) to my Great Aunt Berrenious Stokes McCullaugh Wyman, Riley drowned in the Tradewater River in Hopkins County as a relatively young man. Lula Pearl also suggested that Riley’s name was really “Riley William Stokes,” but according to other researchers, his name was “William Riley Stokes.” Public records seem to support the researchers. William Riley and Eliza had a son named Zeno Tilden Stokes (born 1876, died 1935). My father (Jack Tilden Stokes) remembers his grandfather Zeno fairly well. Zeno had many siblings my father personally met, including Daniel Lucian Stokes (who married Laura Unknown), Gabriel M Stokes (known to my father as “Uncle Gable,” as in Clark Gable; Gabriel married Unknown), and Dorinda P Stokes (who married Henry T Boyd). My father has never met, however, any of the children of these Stokeses. My father recalls conversations about a few of Zeno’s other siblings, including David Forrest “Bud” Stokes, Molly Stokes, and Julia Roselyn Stokes. Zeno Tilden Stokes married Effie May Anderson, whose father was Cole Anderson of Kentucky (Cole and his wife are a complete mystery to us, but that's another story). They moved from Hopkins County, Kentucky, sometime in the early 1900s to Sullivan, Indiana, which is located in Sullivan County. They had two children: Sherman Hayes Stokes (born in 1902; died 1952; married my grandmother, Elizabeth "Betty" Jane Robbins, born 1904) and Berrenious (who went by “Bea” or "Bee") May Stokes (born 1899; married first to William McCullaugh--I think this is how William spelled his surname--then to James Albert Wyman). Sherman Hayes Stokes and Elizabeth Jane Robbins gave birth to my father, Dr. Jack Tilden Stokes (born 1923; married Bettie Mae Johnson, born 1928). Like myself, my father too is very interested in discovering his ancestors. He started this project many years ago as a young man. However, it has been rough going all these years tracking down all of these relatives, especially since we do not live near Hopkins County, Kentucky. We live in Southern Illinois. The above information we know for sure. It is mostly based on the memory of my father, which he got down on paper many years ago. The ancestry of William Riley Stokes is based on some evidence and a bit of speculation. We are pretty sure that William Riley Stokes is the son of Gabriel Stokes (born abt 1809; married Christina Sisk, born 1811), based on some ambiguous census data from the 1850 Census, which lists a son of Gabriel as “William A Stokes” (born abt 1841). We believe that this is really our William Riley Stokes, based on the fact that some property deeds I’ve been privy to show transactions between Gabriel and William Riley Stokes. We also connect William Riley to Gabriel based on the fact that both William Riley and Gabriel came from the same areas of Kentucky; and that my dad’s Great Uncle was named Gabriel, too. The rest is speculation, including the connection between Gabriel Stokes (born abt 1809) and David Stokes (who was born about 1780 in North Carolina and lived in Western Kentucky). Many researchers claim that Gabriel is the son of David Stokes, and that David is the son of Margaret Young and John Stokes, who, according to many, emigrated to the U.S. from England and fought in the Revolutionary War. I would love to see documents demonstrating even the existence of John Stokes and Margaret Young; or documents listing their 10 children; or documents connecting David to Gabriel; or documents connecting Gabriel to William Riley Stokes. Do such documents exist? I have seen the Iverson Stokes letter and the equally famous Matthew Stokes letter, but nothing else. If anyone can help, I would be within his/her debt. If I can help others, just post a response. Sincerely, Jay T Stokes
