I am seeking information about Benjamin Johnston Sr., Jr. who may have moved from Greenville District, SC to Shelby County, KY in stages after 1802 and before 1820. They are shown to have lived in the Shelbyville area in the 1810, 1820, and 1830 census reports. Can anybody help me with information about these Johnstons? Bruce Nichols Mapmaker3@aol.com

If you have any information this couple, please be sure to forward it to Nick -- I'm just forwarding the message... -------------------SNIP---------------------------- Subj: Shelby Co Date: 2/16/00 11:11:38 AM Eastern Daylight Time From: Nich52@aol.com I am trying to find out if it is feasible for me to obtain a marriage certificate for a family member who married there on 8th Jan 1861. Actually, I don't need the actual certificate, just the information contained on it. My family name is Darsley, and I am looking for the marriage of Ellen Darsley and Abram F. Price. I am also looking for any reference at all to the name Darsley in the area, at any time. Could you possibly advise me as to the best way of going about details about the marriage? Do I have to order it from the Kentucky State Archive, or can I get the information about the marriage from somewhere else? Also, I gather from your site that there is an 1860 census for Kentucky. Is it indexed by surname?, or would I have to know the address of who I was looking for? (like here in England) Thank you very much, Nick Darsley, Croydon England

Lonnie, I have JOHNSTON (JOHNSON), TALBOT, and SCOTT family -- all from Shelby Co., KY. (Also Thomas BEATTY family). The JOHNSTON family -- John H. JOHNSTON, b. Oct 25, 1821, Shelbyville, Shelby Co., KY, d. 1851 IND, and bro., Charles D. JOHNSTON, b. 1820 Shelby Co., KY -- emigrated to Putnam Co., IND abt 1838. There was another JOHNSTON, Lafayet te JOHNSTON, age 25, b.-KY, occup-laborer, living w/John H. JOHNSTON during 1850 U.S. census. I assume there was a family relationship, but don't know the nature of it. John H. JOHNSTON's occup listed as Merchant (1850-u.s.census), and Charles D. JOHNSTON, occup - Miller. I had a professional genealogist research this family in Shelby and Henry Co., KY, but alas, she could not come up w/any info to substantiate birthdates, the parents names, etc. John H. JOHNSTON marr. in 1842, Putnam Co., IND, 1)Eliza TALBOT, b. May 13, 1827-KY?, d. 1846 New Maysville, Putnam Co., IND. (Eliza was the dau. of Lore nzo TALBOT, b. 1805 Shelby Co., KY, d. 1834-IND?, and Hestor SCOTT, b. abt 1805 KY?, d. 1892-IND?). According to our family Source: Hestor Scott Towles, Eliza (SCOTT) TALBOT inherited prop. from her mother in Floyd Co., IND. Children of John H. JOHNSTON and Eliza TALBOT: dau. Catherine Hester JOHNSTON marr. William Price TOWLES, 1859 in Putnam Co., IND. (John H. marr ,1847, IND, 2) Mary BEATY, b. Shelby Co., KY (dau of Thomas BEAT TY). John H. JOHNSTON died in 1851, New Maysville, Putnam Co., IND, age 31). Bro, Charles D. Johnston-wife Sarah, sons-Leonidas, Joseph and Charles D. Jr., moved to Olney, Richland Co., ILL by 1860 (u.s. census), where Charles owned a "shoe factory". Children of Lorenzo TALBOT and Hestor SCOTT: Eliza TALBOT, 1827, Lorenzo Dow TALBOT - bd-ukn, James Edward TALBOT, b. 1831, female child TALBOT -bd ukn. I do not know the name of Hestor SCOTT's father and mother. According to History of Putnam County, Othniel ("Neddy"), John, and Aquilla TA LBOT came to Putnam Co., IND abt 1830 from Shelby Co., KY. History of Hendricks Co., IND., - biog. of James Edward TALBOT, s. of Lorenzo, (b. abt 1805), states he had an Uncle "Neddy". Another source for information on the TOWLES and TALBOT families: The Hadley Family of Hendricks Co., IND. My orig information on the JOHNSTON's came fr my uncle (in 1998). He got the info in 1959 fr. Hestor (Scott) Towles, who at that time lived in IND. I hope we can make some connection.............I've been searching a long time for my JOHNSTON/JOHNSON family in KY.

George Tucker's wife was Mary Merrifield- from Frederick Co, Va. William Tucker lived neighbors to Samuel & Mary Merrifield/Merryfield I. Mary Merrifield is named in an 1765 land record Frederick Co, Va where Samuel Sr gave land "for love and affeciton" to Samuel Jr & names other children John, Thomas, Richard, Alexander, Mary, Rachel, Elizabeth & Dinah. 1785 Tithables Nelson Co, Ky George Tucker, John Merryfield, Alexander Merryfield- 2 tithes paid. Thomas Merryfield- 1 tithe paid (4 marriages for Thomas in Nelson Co- believed to be Sr & Jr but have not proven- a Thomas Merrifield also married Maria Leshorn 1809 in Tn who is believed to be the s/o of Alexander but no researcher mentions him). 1786 Tithables Nelson Co, Ky" Isaac Cox list: John Merifield- 1 tithe paid (b 174?, m Priscilla Davis, d/o Ann Neal Davis, 1788 Nelson Co; was a member of the Shaker Community in Chrisitian/Trigg Co, Ky; Priscilla d 1826 bur South Union Shaker Cem; John filed for his Rev War App. 1836 Macoupin Co, IL.). George Tucker- 1 tithe paid David Cox's list Joseph Tucker- 1 tithe paid (believed to be s/o George). 1787: Thomas Merryfield -1 George Tucker -1 John Merryfield -1 Alex Merryfield -1 (m Rachel Boone 1787 Jefferson Co, Ky; was in Nelson, Jefferson, Shelby, Hardin, Larue Cos, Ky-- have much on him. Ch, land records, censuses, probate records, etc). 1788 George Tucker-1 1789- Do not have 1790: Joseph Tucker, Peter Tucker- 2 (Father Joseph & son Peter) on another list: George Tucker-1 John Tucker -1 (son of George- is next door to George-researchers don't list him either). Next door to Samuel Howard & John Hughes (Howards & Hughes connected to Merrifield family, too). 1791: pg 50 John Tucker-1 Geroge Tucker-1 pg 59: Joseph, Peter, Thomas Tucker-3 ( father Joseph, sons Peter & Thomas- has to be). on another list: Thomas Merryfield & D. Mary Belle b ca 1857, m Noah Bryant Oct 7, 1879 Meade Co, Ky Mrs Jeanne Weaver of Morgantown, Ind is a descendant of George & Mary Merrifield Tucker. She clings to the old research data of the Merrifield Family & quite honestly I disagree with it to a large extent. I am finding other Merrifield's in the Nelson/Shelby Co area of Ky that early researchers doesn't mention. So, I am useing the old research data as a guide only. I am finding very probably children of Alexander & Rachel Boone Merrifield that is not mentioned. I am searcing for the parents of my 2nd GGf Samuel Merrifield b ca 1813, d 1865 (Civil War), m bond to Henrietta Johnson 1 Jan 1839. This couple is in the 1840 Cen of Hardin Co, next door to John Merrifield & 1 household away from Alexander & #2 wife Jane Turner. A John Merrifield m Anny Rood/Rude, d/o Asher & Elizabeth ?? Rude, 1811 Hardin Co. A John Merrifield m Sarah/Sally Welch, d/o John, 1816 Hardin Co, Ky ( have an 1819 land record that says John JNR & wife Sarah sold land to Alexander Merrifield, wit: James Redman, Lemuel Smith (son-in-law), Fielding & Sam'l Merrifield (2 sons). John JNR would be s/o John & Priscilla Davis Merrifield, not s/o Alexander & Rachel Boone Merrifield as researchers say). Lots of the old research data doesn't jibe with what I have found to date. The research was done by descendants of John & Sally Welch Merrifield many years ago- is incomplet & inaccurate. So, I am trying to correct it. I got off on the Merrifield's again, I am sorry. I have some on the children of George & Mary Merrifield Tucker that I will gladly share with you, if you want it. Researchers haven't been very complete in their data. They are so eager to copy someone else's reseach rather than do their own & compounds the problems. I do know that a branch of the Tucker Family ended up in Warren Co, IL. Lydia Tucker, d/o George & Mary, m Johnston Abbott, a dau Delilah Abbott m Benoni Merrifield ca 1835 Warren Co, Ill & their descendants are there. Have researched Warren Co, IL myself + I have a researcher who descends from Delilah Abbott & Benoni Merrifield. Benoni is believed to be the s/o John & Priscilla Davis Merrifield. Lots of data that I am trying to put together & it is very slow going!!!! I hope I have helped, rather than confused more!!!!! It seems like for every question I answer- about a dozen more can be asked!!!! For Lincolns look to Washington, Hardin, Larue Cos. Lincoln & Boone connected. To my knowledge Lincolns were from Pa (as Boones were originally- to Va & NC then to Ky- alot in Shelby Co). Have Lincolns involved with my Merrifield Family in Hardin, Larue, Washington Cos, Ky. Also Lincolns were connected to a branch of the Merrifield Family in McLean Co, Il (Abe used to visit them as he rode the circuit). The Merrifield family (like mine) originated (we think) in Frederick Co, Va- some to Fayette Co, Pa (where there were Lincolns); some to Ky (where there were Lincolns). The Pa bunch to Ohio, to Illinois by 1830. My bunch stayed in Ky- coming to Illinois in 1923. Ann Boone Lincoln was GGm of Pres. Abe- she d/o James, s/o George III & Mary Maudridge.
