    1. Re: [KYSHELBY] William Sarvis
    2. Hi Elizabeth: We have corresponded before and discussed your book. I was very happy to receive the information about William Sarvis--some I had but some was new to me. I accessed your web site and enjoyed the family history, etc. As I wrote before, I am descended through Henry Madison Sarvis who I seem to have lost track of. I know he married twice in Montgomery County, IN--once to Mary Carman and 2d to May Preston. His children were by his 2d wife. He was in Dade County, MO in 1850 but I have been unable to find him since then. His two oldest children stayed in Dade county, but the others, Madison, Lucinda, Amerca & Catherine (twins) and Henry evidentally moved with their father. His daughter Lucinda was married to Henry White in Coucil Bluffs, Iowa in 1861 so I am going to see if the family lived there according to the 1860 census. He may have gone to Manhaska County, Iowa, with his siblings. I also will see if I can get a copy of the 1790 Stafford County, VA census and see if there is a Sarvis listed on it. There is a Family History Center of the LDS church here in Colorado Springs and they are very helpful. Again, thank you for the information, and if I get anything additional, I will certainly share it with you. I have found several Sarvis "cousins" since I started this project. Don't know if you have contact with them or not. They are Virginia Servies, Ruth Gaboury, Karen Zach, Warren White, Carol Servies, Linda Sarvis, Chuck Mallette. If you would like any of their email addresses, I will be glad to send them. Warren White has a picture of an old gentleman with long hair and a beard--he looks to be really light complexed with blue eyes. I thought it might be William Sarvis--he looks to be of a different generation than Henry Madison would be. Do you have any pictures of the Sarvis clan? Thanks again for all your help. Take care, and keep in touch. Trudy

Does any one know if Peter Kearns mentioned in the above land transaction is a son of Peter Kearns and Anna Jordan, whose children appear in Shelby Co marriage records? A Peter Kearns Jr bought 80 acres in Brown Twp, Montgomery Co IN 16 May 1826 and again on 1 Nov 1826. Is this the same Peter Kearns who fought in the Battle of Tippecanoe? Could this event have been a key to why some many Shelby Co KY citizens moved with family and friends to the Montgomery Co area? Granted, the Battle of Tippecanoe was fought at Battleground, which is in Tippecanoe Co IN, or about 20 miles due north. Sharon Mills

    1. Re: [KYSHELBY] William Sarvis
    2. Hi Trudy -- I am also a descendent of William Sarvis -- and I have actually written a very detailed history book about the Sarvis/Servies families. I'm also involved with other Sarvis researchers throughout the country. What descendant line are you from? I am from the line of William's 6th child, William Anderson Sarvis. My website: http://www.fondfood.homepage.com Some detailed info. on William senior for you: William first paid taxes in Shelby County, KY on August 7, 1800. The actual 1800 census for Kentucky was destroyed by fire. County records show that William and Mary sold 51 1/4 acres of land located at the "mouth of Fox Run" on March 13, 1824 to James Storts for $615. There is no record of deed by which he bought the land. Neither William nor Mary could sign their names. William then bought 109 acres of land from Peter and Lucy Kearns on the west bank of Fox Run on October 3, 1825. William died before Nov. 30, 1826, along with one son (John A.) from unknown causes, that being the date of an appraisal of his estate. The farm acquired in 1825 was sold in 1830 to a daughter of the Governor of Kentucky named Letitia Todd. Widow Sarvis, her children (married and unmarried) and several family friends then migrated to Montgomery County, Indiana. There is much known record and detail of the family from that point. Widow Sarvis was Mary "Polly" Shelton daughter of Wilson Shelton and sister to Margaret (Shelton) Harding. In 1810 Wilson Shelton and his daughter Margaret drove a herd of cattle from Stafford County Virginia to Shelby County, Kentucky. Margaret married Mason Harding at the end of the trip. It is unclear when/where Mary met William, but it seems likely that she was already married and living with William in Kentucky when her father and sister migrated there because their first child, Jonathan, was born on April 11, 1798, and William had paid taxes in 1800. The 1810 and 1820 census as well as the appraisal of the estate do not list any slaves in the household of William Sarvis. This is contrary to a family report that he was a slave owner. I hope this information is helpful to you. Please feel free to correspond further with me personally. Elizabeth Crabtree Sleuthful@aol.com

    1. [KYSHELBY] William Sarvis
    2. Hi: William Sarvis was my ggggrandfather. He came to Shelby County before April 1798. He lived near the mouth of Fox Run River or Creek. His wife was Mary Polly Shelton. He died in Shelby County in 1826. I would like to know if he applied for any type of homestead or Federal grant to purchase his farm. If anyone has access to the 1800 Shelby County census, I would like to know where he was born. He and his wife had eleven children, all born in Shelby County. Any information concerning their wills, deeds, obituaries, news clips, etc. would really be appreciated. I will gladly pay for copying, postage, record fees, etc. Thank you-Trudy Swain

    1. [KYSHELBY] Jacob Rice, Daniel Rice
    2. Willie D. Smith
    3. Hello! I am very interested in the family of Daniel Rice and Anna Leffler. There are some very familiar names in this family - Matilda is one - daughter of Jacob Rice and Mary Cooper. In early White County, TN taxlists, we have a Daniel Rice on Cane Creek in 1818. That same year, a Jacob Rice sold land in nearby Wilson (now Cannon) Cannon on Saunder's Fork (Auburntown), that had been the property of a John Rice who died prior to September 26, 1806. Also about 1818 in Wilson County, a Daniel Rice either sold or purchased land from a Buchanan. In 1806, Robert G. Anderson was administrator of the estate of George Rice, along with a Turner Lane who earlier (1793) had been in Wythe County, Virginia. In 1800, Robert G. Anderson and Turner Lane were in Bourbon County, Kentucky. I do not know if Shelby County, KY is anywhere near Bourbon County. Hopefully, someone will see a clue in all this and can help me put it all together. My William B. Rice shows up in White County, TN taxlists as early as 1814, with another William Rice in the same county. Only mine is on the censuses of 1820 and 1830. He lived on Falling Water River, less than five miles from Cane Creek, where this Daniel Rice's property was. Jacob Rice was a merchant in McMinnville, Warren County, TN in the 1820's, and Daniel Rice was there on the 1840 census. He may also have been the same Daniel Rice in Bledsoe County, TN records in 1838. There is a strong chance my William Rice could have come through Kentucky from North Carolina. Hopefully, I'll discover who his family was. Thanks Will Smith

    2. Hi..............I also am related to Daniel RICE m. Anna Margaret LEFFLER in Rice's Fort, Washington Co., PA. Their son, Jacob, I show m. Mary Polly CLARK, Wash Co., PA. Rice's Fort was a Rev War blockhouse (fort) -- I believe George Rogers CLARK was one of the founders. Online Sources: 1. http://www.chartiers.com -- This is Washington Co., PA website. Click on Crumrine's History, then click on Donegal Twp (Rice's Fort). The history mentions Jacob Rice, and the land he owned, along w/several LEFFLER families. There is also lots of other useful information on the site including links to 1790 censuses. 2. http://www.familysearch.com --(Ancestry site) -- check Daniel, Jacob and Miriam RICE. I am related thru Miriam Rice, b. abt 1808. Her father was Jacob RICE and Mary Polly CLARK. The family moved to Shelby Co., KY (yr ukn). Her sister was Amanda RICE. Miriam and Amanda marr. bro's, --Miriam m. Abraham MOORE (of Bourbon Co., KY) and Amanda marr. Jacob MOORE, Oct 21, 1829 in Shelbyville, Shelby Co., KY. Amanda and Jacob MOORE moved to Arcola, Douglas Co., ILL. Miriam and Abraham MOORE were living in Indiana -- nr Putnam, Montgomery and Hendricks Counties by 1860. I'm sure Jacob and Mary RICE had other children, but these are the only 2 that I know of. .............carol (cicotte)

    1. Reunion
    2. Bill McCray
    3. Patrick Henry Roberts was generally known as Henry. He was born on 6 March 1756 in England, but fought for the colonists during the Revolutionary War. Each summer Henry's descendants hold a reunion in Franklin County, Kentucky at the Roberts Schoolhouse, which was built on land once owned by Henry. This year's reunion will be held on Sunday, July 30. Here are some details on Henry's family to help you determine if he is your ancestor. The name of his first wife and the date and place of their marriage are unknown. Their children were William (who moved to Wisconsin) Thomas H. Mary (who married Daniel Connell) Emanuel John Elizabeth (who married Jeremiah Williams). Henry's second wife was Catherine Austin (daughter of Moses Austin). They married in June 1810 in Baltimore, Maryland. Their children were Caroline (who married John W. Armstrong and a Young) Maria (who married Jesse Truman and Thornton Porter) Patrick Henry (who married Martha Ann Armstrong) Edmund Agustus Williscroft (who married Mary Jane Thompson, Synthia A. Perkins, and Nancy J. Fitemaster) Alexander G. (who married Louisa Wilmot) Austin H. (who married Elizabeth Pyles, Nancy Ann Eakins, and Sarah J. Easkins) Catherine M. (who married Charles G. Shay) Virginia (who married William Perkins) Shortly before 1830, most of the family moved into Kentucky and set- tled near the Benson Valley in northwestern Franklin County next to the Shelby County line. Henry died there 23 May 1839. If you're interested in attending, let me know and I'll provide directions and more details as I get them. I have descendants of most of the children, too, in case that will help you. Oh, I'm a descendant of Patrick Roberts and Martha Ann Armstrong. Bill McCray Lexington, KY
