3. I currently have access (until about Feb.) to microfilm of the 1860 & 1880 Fed. Census for Shelby Co. (may be a little Simpson & Spencer Co. in there also) and will do lookups. Please try to give a page number for a much quicker response as it really takes a while to scan these things with my old eyes. 3. Brock, We may have talked before but just in case not, I have a little data on the David and James you mentioned on the board: DAVID CLAYTON (no birth/death dates) Only known children: 1) JAMES CLAYTON (d. before 1824 Shelby Co., KY) married 6 Mar 1806 Shelby Co., Ky ELIZABETH (BETSY) TODD (b.8 July 1787, d.23 Aug 1850) 2) MARY (POLLY) CLAYTON (nd) married 1 Oct 1805 Shelby Co., KY ANDREW TODD (b.27 Dec 1776 VA, d.14 Aug 1844 Shelby Co., KY) I believe the Clayton's picked up and moved to Indiana sometime around 1810-1815 along with a bunch of Leatherman's, Finley's, Todd's, Tegarden's, and Kearby's. Hope this helped some. 2. I'm not sure if anyone is interested, but this sounded like a good deal. At Genealogy Books (http://www.genealogy-books.com/), select Kentucky, then Shelby County to find this book... History of Shelby County by George L. Willis, Sr. This well-written publication remains the best source of information on the pioneers of this pivotal Kentucky county. Roughly half of the book is devoted to the county's geology and geography, first settlers and settlements, churches and schools, courts and jails, newspapers, cemeteries, and other county institutions. Another valuable section of the book is the collection of reminiscences assembled by the author, including an account of the 1781 Long Run Massacre attributed to the grandson of Squire Boone, a younger brother of Daniel and one of the county's founders. Two other sections hold the greater interest for genealogists. One of them consists of a group of source records, including the first Shelby County tax list, 1792-1795; lists of Shelby County judges, county clerks, and postmasters; Shelby County marriages, 1792-1800; an index to the first will book of Shelby County; a list of Shelby County Revolutionary soldiers and pensioners; and various other listings of Shelby County pioneers. Of equal importance is the section of biographical sketches of the following Shelby County personages: Squire Boone, William Shannon, Bland Ballard, Col. Chas. S. Todd, William Logan, John Allen, Col. Abraham Owen, Gov. John Pope, Capt. John Simpson, Moses Hall, Dr. John Knight, Nicholas Merriwether, and Joseph Hornsby. 3. If , by chance you are (or are going to be) in Kentucky, the new Kentucky History Center in Frankfort has a great library. They have all kinds of birth and death certificates. IIRC, they have certificates from about 1911 up to 1948 (I think) on microfilm. At the time I was there in February, the cost for copies was .30. They also have older ones in files, but I didn't get a chance to investigate those. I was too busy playing with the microfilm! I was there for a day and didn't even scratch the surface of what I wanted to do, yet I came home with about 10 birth and death certificates I had been looking for. 1. [KYSHELBY] requesting information
    2. The following responses have happen to me requesting data: I have requested of the Social Security Administration copies of some Social Security applications. My letters were sent on Oct. 15th. I received one on last week and two more today. There are still a couple from Oct. 15th outstanding. When I requested the FORM 80 papers to order military paper work on Civil War veterans, it took 4 to 6 weeks just to get the forms. Then it 6 to 8 weeks to get the copies from each request. I wanted the full package and asked for it when I made the initial request. I was paying with a credit card, but they did not do the full package with the initial request. It is well worth the extra money to get the full package. There will be tidbits and trinkets of information on some of the pages that the clerks in Washington, DC won't see or think is important. Death Certificates from the State of Kentucky take 6 weeks. The state charges $6 each. If you want a Kentucky Death Certificate that is in the public domain, there are some folks that "advertise" via the Kentucky GenWeb page that they will get public domain copies. They charge $3 each. The lady that I have used goes every week and she will send the copies back immediately after she goes. I always send a stamped and addressed envelope. I am still waiting since Oct. 15th for a Death Certificate from Texas and one from California. I have heard that California takes forever. I am still waiting on an Oct. 26 request to Illinois. Virginia replied back rather quickly to my request for a death certificate. They will not grant this request except to immediate family members within 50 years of the death or 100 years of the birth or marriage. Florida usually takes about 6 weeks to process a death cerificate request. North Carolina took 8 weeks to process a birth certificate request. I often request obituaries from libraries. The Shepherdsville (Bullitt County), KY and the Dade City (Pasco County), FL libraries have been the most responsive, courteous and helpful libraries. Nashville, TN public library sent back my request and $5 money order when I requested a couple of obits. They said they had a $15 fee per obituary. (I went up there and got it myself. I live in Atlanta.) The Louisville, KY Public Free Library (main branch) has been most cooperative via mail. A public library in Tucson, AZ stinks. I have requested two obituaries, pretty close in time to each other, and they haven't replied at all. Same for the Shelbyville, KY Public Library. Dan

"my mother" is 12, Mary is 13, Julia is 11 Then "step-grandmother" (Grandfather Ryan's #2 wife) comes to care for them but isn't well enough, so goes home. By this time their are a total of 7 children. John Wallace has sister, Nora Wallace Schibold, who lives in Frankfort. "My mother" goes to live with her. Mrs. Kirk speculates about relationships of LILLISes to her family: Susan McAuliffe Lillis ("MY MOTHER'S GRANDMOTHER), Mrs Kirk believes was a Ryan and sister to "Grandfather Ryan". This is my best interpretation of the letter. - ---------------------------------------------------- - ---------------------------------------------------- On the marriage bond and return of Susan McAuliffe and Edward/Edmund Lillis in July 17, 1859, the witnesses are Eliza Ryan and Dennis Griffin. Please tell me more about which SETTLE family you are researching and I'll try to help you. If I can't help you, I'll put you in touch with other people who can. Looking forward to hearing from you. Pat Settle ================= ================= Hello Pat, What I know is from a letter written to my mother in response to a letter written to her from my mother. As follows: Dear Mary Frances, Thank you so much for the information on the Ryan family. I think I have it all in place with Lee's information, I think! Grandfather Ryan's daughter by his first wife was my mother's mother and her name was Elizabeth Ryan and she married John Wallace, they were living in Shelby county having settled there after arriving in New York from Ireland. My Grandfather Wallace was a Stone Mason and moved from Shelby County to Anderson County where there was more work of that type-- fences, etc.. My mother and Aunt Mary Webster and Aunt Julia Settle were born there and maybe two boys, John and Patrick (Pat). I am not sure about them, but I remember my mother telling about the Civil War, the Northerns came and took her father and the horse and left her mother and small children and later more came through and took their cow and chickens and most every thing they had. Then her Grandfather Ryan came and took her mother and the children back to Shelby County and they stayed there until the war was over and Grandfather Wallace came back and I think then ( I am not sure) they came back to Franklin County. My Grandmother Wallace died with Typhoid fever and an infant and were buried in Frankfort. Then their step- Grand Mother came to take care of them- my mother was 12 years old, aunt Mary Webster 13 yrs. and aunt Julia (Cynthia's mother) was 11yrs. old. She (grandmother Ryan) was old and not too well and went back to Shelby County and aunt Mary Webster and the others tried to take care of the rest of the family, which had increased after their father came back from the war, I think there were about seven. Their father had a sister living in Frankfort, Nora Schibold (I not sure if that is the correct spelling) but you may remember something about them- we all called her Aunt Nora, my mother lived with she and her family and went to Good Shepherd School until after she made her First Holy Communion and Conformation and remained in her home and worked in a Taylor Shop when she was older. Now, I can't seem to figure where your Grand Mother Lillis comes in but I am almost sure she was a Ryan- she must have been the Grand Father's sister as Lee stated. My mother always called Lee's father Uncle Dennis- so I am sure he was my Grand Mother Wallaces' half-brother. When the Spring or Summer comes I am going to Frankfort and get Cynthia and go to the cemetery, she knows where the Wallace, Ryan and Schibolds' lots are located and see what I can get straight. I do not know anything about the Lillis family- other than your mother's immediate family. My mother and your mother were always very close and I thought they were first cousins. Then there was a Jim Lillis that my mother went with and I remember her talking about him- I think they were about getting to the marriage state, when her brothers, Pat and John Wallace took over a farm in Woodford County (and they were not married) and wanted my mother to keep house for them so she left Frankfort and came to Woodford County near Midway (where I live now) and that is where she met and married my father- Frank McCullough. I hope you can read this my fingers are so stiff from Arthritis I find myself leaving out words and letters. Thanks again and also Lee she has helped a lot as I can put the pieces together. My mother was very fond of Cousin Ellen Raff and kept in touch with her for years. She sent me a sterling silver Rosary when I graduated from High School. I don't remember when she died but the correspondence stopped and I don't guess there was any one to pick it up. Hope you are feeling better- we have been real well- haven't had a cold or any illness so far. Of course I suffer from arthritis in my left leg and hands but have learned to live with it. Love, Mary. I have transcribed the letter as written. The return address was: Mr. & Mrs. E.T. Kirk, 100 Oak Street Route 1, Box 345 Midway, Ky. 40347 In my research I have found the marriage for Eliza Ryan and John Wallace. As well as some information on their children. But I am still piecing this thing together. So if this is familiar to you or you can refer this email to anyone that might be able to help with my research I'd be very grateful to you. Thank you in advance. Regards, Jean Frances Mahaffey. P.S. My mother's maiden name was Mary Frances Triplett. Her father and mother were Wade Hampton Triplett and Susan Lillis Triplett. Susan's mother and father were Edward/ Edmund Lillis and Susan McAuliffe and Susan's mother is listed as Mary Ryan on their bond and marriage return.
