My Owens and Long ancestors resided in these communities, but I can not find them on the Russell County map. I realize some of these communities may have been covered by Lake Cumberland after 1950, but I would still like information as to where they were situated prior to 1950. One modern map shows Long Bottom downstream from the dam, but my family records indicate that the original Long Bottom was evacuated due to the dam construction. Another modern map also shows a place called "Rose Crossroad," and I'm wondering if that could have been called "Rowe's Crossroad" at one time. I fear that Owensby and Wild Goose are not shown on modern maps because their sites are under water. However, I would like to try to pinpoint where they were before the lake was filled. If anyone has information on any or all of these sites, please let me hear from you. Even if you could describe the location, that would be helpful. Thanks. GARY O. TODD Arlington, TX
I have a book called "Russell County, Kentucky History & Families" and it has a couple of the towns listed in it. On page 23 under "Steamboat on the Cumberland" it lists Shoals in our area. It has Wild Goose then in parenthesis it says (Rowena). On page 37 it has "Long Bottom Community (Now Covered byt he Lake". It states: "Russell County lost the Long Bottom Community when the Wolf Creek Dam was built. It was a small community between Rowena and Dendall, Kentucky. Long Bottom was in the southern part of Russell County and followed along the flat land of the Cumberland River. It was an enclosed area with the river on one side and a very steep hill on the other side. Highway 127 from the Lake Cumberland State Park entrance to the Dam is on top of this hill which now overlooks the lake. This is where Long Bottom Community was located." This book shows a map of Russell County before the lake was formed and it shows Rowena but not the other towns you mentioned. I bought my book from the Russell County Historical Society but you might try writing the publisher, Turner Publishing Company, 412 Broadway, P.O. Box 3101 Paducah, KY 42002-3101. It was copywrited in 1996. It's got a lot of local histories in it so is well worth the price. Gary. I looked at some copies of the original census records and they used the word or place of "Rowes Crossroads". I have also noticed that Julian R. Long is sometimes listed as Roe and other times as Rowe. Going through my paper files, I came across some material that had been sent to me by K.I. Tabor in Overland Park, Ks. She had copied it from two different books. One was from ROCK OF AGES which I have. This book list the deceased in Clinton County and where they are buried. I am looking through my paper file, trying to find her e-mail address. I think she usually used "Kathry T." The other one is RELOCATED CEMETERIES OF RUSSELL, CLINTON, WAYNE AND PULASKI COUNTIES, KENTUCKY published kby Asher Leon Young in 1989. She had found this found at the library in her area. He is now dead and my research shows that Westery KY U. Library has all of his materials and collection. I put a request in for it through the Inter-Loan Library. One of the big libraries near you might have it. She sent a copy of a map that shows where all the cemeteries were located prior to the filling of Cumberland Lake. It was taken from a much larger map and my copy is so small that I cannot read it with a magnifing glass. In looking through the pages I found Almas P. Owens that died in 1903 at age 1 and Myrtle E. Owens died in 1901 at age 1. They had been buried in the Pierce Cemetery where several Longs were buried. They were moved to Collins Cemetery. Permission was given by M.L. Owens, father living in Foard City, Texas. I assume this is your family line. The best to you in this Christmas season.
