I am wondering if anyone has access to the Adair County Court Order Book covering 1817. I am looking for an entry in Book D, p. 14, concerning a John French. I have the records on microfilm up till 1815, but not later years. The reason for my interest is that we have tested the DNA from descendants of three sons of Bryant and Milly Flanagan. One line, their first son John was born around 1815, does not match descendants of two younger sons of Bryant and Milly. Since we tested descendants of two sons of that John Flanagan, the DNA almost certainly signature dates back to John and does not represent a later non-paternity event in that line. Their DNA signature does match at a high resolution several members of the French surname DNA project, and given that Milly's maiden name was French, discussion with the lab and the French surname project folks, we believe it represents an adoption. I checked my microfilm index and there is an entry for a John French in 1817 with "Apptd Guardian" in the nature column. I don't know if this John French was appointed someone's guardian but am interested in learning what is in this entry. I read with interest your findings in re John Flanagan. I had entered his birth year as 1811 based on the following census data, which would have him born before Bryant and Milley were married in 1813. However, he did name his first son Bryan and named a daughter Milly, which makes one think there is a close relationship here. There is also a son named Daniel. I did not have him linked as a son to Bryant and Milley, though, because there was nothing to make me think he was a son because of the dates and the fact he wasn't in Bryant's will. 1850 U.S. Federal Census, population schedule (Missouri, Dodge & Putnam Co.) In Re the Goodspeed article: Based on the census records, a birth date of 1810 for John Flanagan [Sr] would appear correct, but of course the location wouldn't have been Russell Co. The other information seems to check out except that Ruth Triplett's parents were married in Adair Co. on 17 Aug 1809. Please keep me updated with your findings. Glenda (Dunbar) Hall
