Hello! I am hoping to find someone that has the Cemetery Books for Rowan Co. and can tell me if Miranda Vanlandingham/Vallandingham Lancaster Choat(e) is listed and which cemetery she is in? I am hoping to obtain a photograph of her marker. Her first husband was John Benjamin Lancaster. He died between 1860-1867. I have a suspicion that he died in the Civil War, but can't prove it. I am wondering if he might also be listed? Hope to hear form someone! Thanks so much. Karen ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
Karen, I looked up Miranda Vanlandingham Choat in the 2006 Rowan County cemetery CD (the books are also on CD and the CD is updated yearly) and she is buried in the Slaty Point Cemetery on Route 1722, Lower Licking Road, close to Farmers, Kentucky. Here's her listing: Choat, Mirandy [Vanlandingham] ; 15 Apr 1832-24 Jul 1893 ; Single stone ; Wife of Abe [Abraham] Choat, son of Richard & Elizabeth Choat. Abe Choat and his mother Elizabeth are not listed in the cemetery books, but there are a lot of unknown/unmarked graves in the Slaty Point Cemetery and he could very well be buried there, too. The only other Choat in the books is her father-in-law: Choat, Richard "Cull" ; [CA 1781]-[death date unknown/unlisted] ; Single stone ; Husband of Elizabeth Choat, father of Abe Choat. John Benjamin Lancaster is not listed in the RC cemetery books. There are only 3 Lancasters: Donald Bruce Lancaster (1939-19410, Gerald Wayne Lancaster (1931-1951), and Thomas Jefferson Lancaster (1861-1900). If no one else can get you a picture of the 2 stones, I will try to get out there one weekend and hunt them up. It's a large cemetery and I've never been there, so it may take me a while. I noticed your death date for Miranda differs from the one in the cemetery books, but the books do have typos in them, so your date may very well be the correct one. We can check the date against the picture of the tombstone. Even tombstones have been known to be incorrect! Hello to all that are interested in this thread, First of all I am researching the Choate family and have done so for 28 years. I don't claim to have all the answers, however this e-mail brings up several questions in my mind. Secondly, I realize that MS Lowe is only giving out information she found on the Rowan Co., Cemetery CD and in no way am I trying to contradict or critique her. I agree that Abraham Choat, below, is the son of Richard and Elizabeth Choate. Elizabeth (Enix) Choate was the daughter of Abraham and Julian (Logan) Enix of Lewis Co., KY. I used census records and a marriage record to come to that conclusion. Richard Choate m. Elizabeth Enix, 15 November 1831, Lewis Co., KY, Vol. A, p. 107, His second marriage, her first. 1850 Census of Carter Co., KY- District No. 1 - HH # 139 Richard Shoat 68 M Farmer VA Pauper Elizabeth 37 F KY Tilla 17 F KY Terissa 14 F KY Mary 11 F KY Zachariah 10 M KY Emaly 8 F KY Namon 6 M KY Malvina A. 5 F KY Eliza E. 3 F KY Abraham 1 M KY 1860 Census of Fleming Co., KY, District No. 2, Flemingsburg P.O., HH # 845/924 Shoat, Richard 79 M W Gentleman VA Elizabeth 47 F W KY Nayman 17 M W Laborer KY Liza 13 F W KY Abraham 11 M W KY James A. 9 M W KY Henry C. 7 M W KY As you can see this is Richard and Elizabeth Choate with their son Abraham and his siblings. However, Richard Choate was previously married and had at least seven children by his first wife. I have found marriage records to substantiate six of the daughters. The only son, Abner, never married and I only assume he was the son of Richard because his sister, Julia Ann (Choate) Logan, named one of her sons Abner and that Abner Choate lived in Lewis Co., KY near the Logans. 1850 Census of Lewis Co., KY, District No. 1, HH # 106 Jabez Truitt 42 M KY Farmer Susanne " 35 F OH Josephine " 6 F KY John W. " 2 M KY Samuel Walker 12 M KY John " 12 M KY Abner Choate 25 M KY Farmer I have been to the Hurst Cemetery in Fleming Co., KY and found a tombstone for whom I believe is my ancestor, Richard Choate. The birth date does not match the census records, but he is buried near his daughter, Eliza (Choate) Seever, wife of Caspar H. Seever and next to his daughter Emily (Choate) Helphenstine, wife of Lewis Harrison Helphenstine. If you have an interest in this line then you can view the inventory of the Hurst or "Lost Penland" Cemetery on my web page, listed below in my signature. Richard "Cull" Choate is probably Richard C. Choate, son of Richard and Elizabeth (Enix) Choate and not Richard's father. I have not been to Slaty Point Cemetery so I cannot say exactly what is on the tombstones, but I thought I should weigh in and bring up these points. Again, I want to say I am not being critical of anyone here. I know MS. Lowe is only giving out information that she has in front of her and whomever recorded the information from Slaty Point was doing the best that they could under the circumstances. I know it is a large cemetery and it is difficult to read old tombstones and then try to keep all of them straight. Bruce Bruce E.
