One is the University library, the other is the County library. Coverage is spotty on the early years, but 1971 should be no problem. The microfilms per se are not indexed by name. If you know the date of death it should be no problem to scan the relevant week, though. The microfilms can be borrowed on interlibrary loan through the University of Kentucky. See instructions here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygenweb/sources/ukfilm.html Additionally, about 4 years ago the Genealogy Section of the Rowan County Historical Society started an obituary file, where obituaries are photocopied by volunteers, attached to a large index card, and filed in boxes. These boxes are stored in the Genealogy and Local History room at the county library in Morehead. There is no "index" to the boxes, but since they are in alphabetical order by name of the deceased, lookup is easy. I believe that coverage is complete from the date that the project started, but is spotty before then. The majority of the obits in it are not taken from the microfilms, but rather obtained by photocopying the personal obituary collections of Society members. So whether it contains a given obit from before 1996 or so tends to depend on whether some Society member was interested in clipping it when it first ran. Additionally, when somebody visiting the library copies an obit from the microfilm, they often make an extra copy for the obit file boxes. (I did when I was last there.) But, so far as I know, there has been no concerted effort to copy all the obits from the microfilms into the file boxes. I also don't know whether there is anyone in Morehead who will do lookups in the obituary file boxes on behalf of those who live elsewhere. (I live in California and it's been about 3 years since I last visited Kentucky, so I can't help. There are actually several obits I'd like to look up myself, one from 17 Feb 1971. It wouldn't happen to be the same person, would it? :-) -- Teri Pettit
