I am trying to identify the parents of George Ann SCAGGS born ca 1883, reportedly in Lawrence Co., Ky. At age 15 she married John Wesley BROWN, son of Coleman BROWN and Martha DILLON, in Rowan Co., Ky. Rowan Co. marriage book 3, p. 92, records marriage on 4 Oct 1898 of John Wesley Brown, age 24, residence Wyatt, occupation farmer, born Elliott Co., parents born in Ky, to George Ann Scaggs, age 15, residence Wyatt, born and father born Lawrence Co., Ky, mother born Johnson Co., Ky. Bond surety by J. M. Lovelace, at Arch White's by F. M. Crisp, witnesses James Loveless and Floyd Conley. (Lovelace/ Loveless is really spelled both ways on the marriage record.) Since George Ann was born in 1883, and married before 1900, she will not appear in any census with her parents. (Although the 1900 census might eliminate some possibilities if they have other children with conflicting birthdates, or if the number of children listed is equal to the total number of living children they had by 1900.) The most likely candidates seem to be Lewis C. SCAGGS who m. Nancy LESTER about 1866 in Lawrence Co., and his brother Andrew SCAGGS who m. Linia S. SCAGGS on 23 Oct 1878 in Lawrence Co. Both of them were in Rowan Co. by 1900. Their other brothers Daniel D., Henry C., and William, who also moved to Rowan County before 1900, all seem to be eliminated on the basis of having no "child gaps". But it is possible that George Ann is a more distant relative.
