    1. Awesome Genealogy Information!
    2. Some of you have the land description and want to know how to read it. Land Description: S1/2 NW1/4 S14 T19N R10E. This is a description of land. It is read from back to front, first finding on a map the Range, then Township, then Section. This piece of land would be the south 1/2 of the northwest 1/4 part of Section number 14 in a specific Township. Land Measures: 1. length: one mile equals 5280 feet, eighty chains, 320 rods, or 1760 yards. One rod equals 5.50 years, 16.5 feet or 25 links 2. Area: one square mile equals 640 acres or 102,400 square rods. One acre equals 4840 square yards or 43,500 square feet. One square rod equals 30.25 square yards, or .006 of a square acre. Yard Land: 1. A quantify of land which varies from fifteen to forty acres. In some places a quarter of an acre was called a yard of land. 2. a barn or pen for animals 3. a farmyard Land Patent: the document which states the settler had a permanent claim and was the first purchaser of a piece of land. Land Right: the legal obligations which are attached to ownership of land. Land Warrant: a certificate issued by a land office which entitled the possessor to a certain number of acres of land. The certificate was negotiable. Military warrant: a document issued by the land office requesting that land be set aside for a veteran entitled to it for his military service. The land was located in Ohio and Kentucky and eligibility for its ownership was based upon the veteran's military certificate. Military Certificate: a document stating that a person's proof of military service had been presented to the proper authorities and, therefore, he was eligible for a specific amount of land as compensation. There was only one claim to this type of land available to each person. Military land: public land which was reserved for Revolutionary or War of 1812 soldiers to receive as part of their compensation for service. Bounty Land (Federal) shortly after the beginning of the Revolutionary War the Continental Congress promised land to those who would serve in the Continental Army. The acreage of land so promised was on a sliding scale based on rank. For example, an enlisted man was to receive 100 acres, while a major general was to have 1,000 acres. Bounty land (State) in some states the promise of issuing land for service in the Rev. War was far more liberal than that of the federal government which led many veterans to trade bounty land warrants for state warrants. Patriotic service: during the Revolutionary War these persons did not serve on the field of battle, but served as wagoners, furnished ammunition or supplies and therefore were eligible for pensions. Many services to the Continental Army are now a part of the regular army; chaplains, physicians, veterinarians, paymasters, quartermasters, etc. Bondman: 1. male slave 2. a man who had been bound into service without wages being paid 3. a tenant who was not free, a villein. "bond" servant: an indentured servant Bondsman: a person, sometimes referred to as a surety, who pledges a sum of money as bond for another. Bondwoman: a female slave Bondmaid: a female who has been bound into service with no wages paid/a female slave. Marriage Bond: in Colonial days, this was a sum of money promised, usually by the parents or a close relative of a young couple, to the governor of the state. This was asked to ensure that there was no reason, moral or legal, for the couple not to marry and that they would not become charity cases. Money did not actually change hands, but could be called for if the marriage did not fulfill the requirements. Marriage register: a book which lists marriage licenses issued and, frequently, marriage returns. This book is kept at a clerk's office in the courthouse. Marriage return: notation by a minister which states on which date he married a couple. Nephew: 1. the male child of a person's brother or sister 2. sometimes in old documents can refer to other relatives: grandson, cousin, etc. 3. a descendant Neeveye: descendants Nee: born. This word is used after a married woman's surname to indicate her maiden name, e.g. Mrs. Marian Johnson, nee Baker. New mother: a Colonial term for a stepmother. Overseer: 1. A Colonial official appointed to do one of any number of supervisory jobs, a road supervisor 2. an officer of the Quaker church who had the duties of the business affairs of the meeting, preparing answers to queries, giving advice to members and preventing the introduction of unnecessary matters and premature complaints into meetings for business and discipline 3. Ordnance office in charge of construction. Sometimes he is called a superintendent 4. A person in charge of work on a plantation 5. An overlooker frequently appointed in wills. Sometimes the executor was called an overseer 6. a man in the pillory Overseer of the poor: in Colonial days the person appointed to this post purchased the materials to be used in work done by the unemployed. He also dispensed aid to the poor. Overseer of the road: a person appointed to maintain a specified stretch of road. He obtained workers to care for the road from the people who lived along it and used the road most frequently. 1. Graves that was in Old Crain Graveyard Fleming Co. KY Part # 1
    2. >From an article dated June 3, 1976 from the Flemingsburg Gazette.....A letter to the Editor. Dear Jean, The recent articles in the GAzette covering Rev. War Soldiers and other Historical items have been interesting to me and I am clipping them for my files, However, in the May 6 Issue I was appalled to learn that the old Crain Graveyard between Poplar Plains and Hillsboro had been destroyed. The Article, written by Mrs. Lee OWENS, explains that the old graveyard had been removed. That is terrible. In that Graveyard are the remains of some of Fleming County's foremost Pioneers. The ancestor of most of the Crains in Fleming Co. is buried there, as well as Col. John HUNT. Several members of the RAWLINGS, EMMONS, DEARING, and MCROBERTS families are buried there. I copied most of the stones in this graveyard the day before the big Blizzard in November, 1950. I think that Mrs. Leo Royse also made a copy of the stones once. It is fortunate we made copies or all would be lost now. I cannot understand how the community could have permitted this to happen with so many of the descendents of the people still around in the county. I am enclosing a copy of the stones as I found them in 1850 and you may publish them if you wish. Incidently, I believe that Fleming Co.'s first Methodist Church was at Stockton Station, near the Flemingsburg Stockyards, rather than the one beside the Crain Graveyard. Sincerely, Bill Talley William M. Talley McGill University Montreal, Quebec This what the note says: Stones formerly in the Old Crain Gaveyard. 1. Our Indian Stories............
    2. I was so proud of Joanne for starting her researchof her Indian Heritage. I know I heard all my life that I was Indian and Irish. This came from both sides of my family. These stories are true...they weren't contrived. My Father told me his grandmother was full blooded Cherokee...what percentage that makes me I haven't a clue. Do you devide it like Pie? That way I would be 1/4? Anyway, I grew up knowing my indian heritage but....Along came the census and no indians. This has been a source of aggrivation and frustration for every researcher with Indian Heritage. I think its time for a Roll Call of just the ones who were ALLEGED to be or have Indian connections. Me First:: MCCULLEY......MCARTY BASFORD.......MCCLAIN HIATT.........SHEPHERD HYATT.........SWEARINGEN GREGORY.......GOLDY,GOLDIE MCKENZIE......HIGHLEY THORNBURG.....COPHER PERRILL.......GIBBS BROWN.........WILSON PERRY.........ETAL: See, I and my husband are eat up with Scotch/Irish/Indian names. If we all work together maybe we can come up with what the census didn't do. There was fear to admit to being an indian inthe early days so.....no one admitted to it. Its ok now...I promise. Have fun now and lets hear those stories on the list for all of us to share along with the surnames. That is if........you are really ready to hear about your Heritage.

    1. Bastardy Book
    2. Just another reminder, This book does not contain every illigitimate birth in Rowan County.......It is APPARENTLY a record that was kept when someone either filed for some assistance from the County for the keep of a child or...when a charge was filed against that person for support. I don't think Icopied all the names tho....knowing me I just knew I would remember. Yeh! right! I just barely remember my name. I copied this several years ago and I am surprised I am the only one who knows about it??? When you email me....Please do not ask me for a lot of surnames...It is not indexed and It isn't fair...... Give me a name of the lady in question. I will not send just all JONES OR SMITHS. If its a man who is in question....give me his name. I will not send the information any other way. This is a little sensative since it names names...especially when it gets to people who might still be alive. That is why I said I will not post the list to the mailing lists. Hope you understand now.....Hummmmm??

    1. Rowan County Bastardy Book at the Court House
    2. Several years ago I was at the Rowan Co. KY Court House and saw this strange looking little book. It was marked Bastardy Book. Since it was small and the dates were old I hand copied just the names that were in it. The dates go back to 1898 and the latest entry was 1958. This book was apparently used when someone applied for Public Assistance for care for the child. If you have someone who you are trying to find....please email me privately. I will not publish the names otherwise. This book was was on a shelf in the room with the Deeds and Wills....It is a public Record. I have the childs name just the mother and the Father. and I guess the date the claim was filed for assistance.

I was naturally immune and each time I told him he did it last year and he did not believe me. The only thing that saved me from a fourth was we moved to Indiana that year. Yes I do remember him. I screamed every time a DR. came toward me with a needle. Mary Johnson Wallace. >> LOL I can see that grey headed man to this day. My father was in the IOOF LOdge with him and he thought he was wonderful [sorry we children didn't share the same feelings] I remember how they used the same needle over and over and it was one of them metal syringes that I think they use on Animals wasn't it? LOL For a small child it sure was an ominous looking thing. Thank God for those disposable needles. And the nurse who attended him was almost as barbaric as he was. She would help hold the little babies who the mothers brought to school for their small pox Vaccinations or whatever they wanted. What I remember too.....was how Dr. Evans hands shook as he gave the shots.....Talk about being Traumatized. Mary, I know we aren't the ones who were scared stiff by Dr. Evans. Thanks for sharing. 2. << Subj: Emmons graveyards Date: 7/18/00 7:58:35 PM Eastern Daylight Time From: johnvice@kih.net (John Vice) To: VMcca43559@aol.com (Vivian McCarty) Vivian, I deleted all the talk about the Emmons graveyards, until some things dawned on me. So, I don't know exactly what names you may have been seeking, but I have a listing for 2 different Emmons graveyards near the area you are talking about (Ramey) but they are in Fleming Co. I am somewhat confused by their locations listed as it says they are at Rock Lick (when I thought at least one Emmons graveyard was just across from the old Ringos Mill Covered Bridge in Fleming Co.) Rock Lick is an area that is off the road that leads between Hillsboro & Sharkey in Fleming Co. Anyway, could you give me the names of the people you were told were buried in an Emmons graveyard & I will look at my list (I will keep it at my computer until you reply back to me) & tell you if the person you thought buried there shows up. Looks like there is what is called "Old Emmons Graveyard" & one called just plain "Emmons Graveyard." All located between Hillsboro & Sharkey (Sharkey is right on the Fleming/Rowan Co. line & it is where Route 801 starts that eventually intersects (after about 5-8 miles) with U.S. 60. Will away await your reply. John >> Hi John, I got my GGGrandmothers Death certificate and it stated she was buried in the Emmons Cemetery, Ramey KY. I never knew where Ramey KY was but I knew where my GGgrandparents as well as Grandparents lived. Now I know that Ramey KY was around I-64 at exit 113? I know my GGGrandparents and Grandparents had the property that lay about the Fleming County line at Sharkey across #801 to Farmers.@ us 60... How many Acres I don't know but I do know that My GGGGrandfather Josiah Hiatt had at least 240 Acres on the Triplett Creek so its most probable some of this property was from his? Anyway...That Emmons Cemetery on # 158 is that the one you are talking about? My Grandfather George Hiatt/Hyatt used to have a General Store at the same location except where the Trailer sets now that is a Beauty Shop. Across the lane from the General Store at the Fleming County Line right now.....theone on #158 at 801. I know that is where this all took place. I doubt that there will be a head stone but her name was Nancy Ann Hiatt/Hyatt. She was the Daughter of Elijah Royse and Sylvanna Tabor who married Robert Kissick after Elijah died or they divorced? Thanks....I appreciate all this help. Viv

The one with the group of girls I posted to Morgan Co's web site hoping someone could identify them....Nothing so far. So, I may scan these others and let you take a look at them to see if they can be identified. Aanyone reserching SKIDMORE of Rowan-Bath-Fleming Co's in KY? Heres hoping!! Vivian

    1. Anyone else remember Dr. Evans the School Doctor??
    2. I am wondering if anyone besides me remembers Old Doctor Evans the School Doctor who came about 3 times a year to give shots to the School Children? Was it just me or was those needles as big as a garden hose? It took me years to be able to take a shot like a "Man". I am scarred for life....all because of Old Dr. Evans I just saw his name on a Death Certificate I got recently and it brought all those memories flooding back. All of us children laugh about it now but Gee! Twas not funny at the time. Please share your experience.....<G>
