    1. Henry S Cooper
    2. Lori Ritchey
    3. Searching for information on Henry S Cooper. He was born 1 Jan 1842 and died 30 June 1917. Burial was 1 July. (no funeral?) According to his death certificate he was poisoned by Strychnine, a homicide. A.L. Blair signed the death certificate. I am searching an obituary, any newspaper articles related to this incident, any coroner's reports, any trial information for the person that commited the murder. It seems to me that if the physician knew it was a homicide and it was strychnine, they must have known who did it to have that information. The death certificate reports his father's name as Fle K. Cooper, or even possibly Fleck Cooper, it's not clear to me which it might be. Mother's name is unknown. Roll Coffee is listed as undertaker (although I don't think that was his profession) Regarding his father's name I think it may have been Fielding based on some census information I found on the Internet. I'm going to search actual census records to try and make a connection there. He was also a Civil War veteran serving in what was first Company F 24th Kentucky Infantry, then became known as Company K 6th Kentucky Cavalry. He enlisted 20 Nov 1863 and discharged 6 Sept 1865. Will take any little piece of information I can get. Am willing to pay for some research, copies and postage. Thanking you in advance. 2. Ever wonder what state someone's S.S# was issued in? Here's how to tell. SAMPLE LETTER TO ORDER ORIGINAL SS APPLICATION AT BOTTEM OF PAGE WHAT THE NUMBERS MEAN: The nine-digit Social Security number is divided into three parts. The first three numbers generally indicate the state of residence at the time a person applies for his or her card.Originally, the lowest numbers were assigned to the New England states, and the numbers grew progressively higher in the South and West. However, in recent years, this geographical relationship has been disrupted somewhat by the need to allocate numbers out of sequence as state populations change. The middle two digits of a Social Security number have no special significance, but merely serve no break the numbers into blocks of convenient size. The last four characters represent a straight numerial progression of assigned numbers. SSA has issued more than 383 million Social Security numbers, and about 6 million new numbers are assigned each year. But even at this rate, there will be no need to reissue the same numbers, revise the present system, or devise a new numbering system for several generations. For this reason, SSA plans to continue using the nine-digit number. 001-001 New Hampshire 387-399 Wisconsin 004-007 Maine 400-407 Kentucky 008-009 Vermont 408-415 Tennessee 010-034 Massachusetts 416-424 Alabama 035-039 Rhode Island 425-428 Mississippi 040-049 Connecticut 433-439 Arkansas 050-134 New York 433-439 Louisiana 135-158 New Jersey 440-448 Oklahoma 159-211 Pennsylvania 449-467 Texas 212-220 Maryland 468-477 Minnesota 221-222 Delaware 478-485 Iowa 223-231 Virginia 486-500 Missouri 232-236 West Virginia 501-502 North Dakota 237-246 North Carolina 503-504 South Dakota 247-251 South Carolina 505-508 Nebraska 252-260 Georgia 509-515 Kansas 261-267 Florida 516-517 Montana 268-302 Ohio 518-519 Idaho 303-317 Indiana 520 Wyoming 318-361 Illinois 521-524 Colorado 362-386 Michigan 525&585 New Mexico 526-527 Arizona 575-576 Hawaii 528-529 Utah 531-539 Washington 540-544 Oregon 545-573 California 574-Alaska 577-579 District of Columbia 580-Virgin Islands 581-585 Puerto Rico, Guam 700-729 Railroad INVALID SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS 1. 1. Epidemics
    2. In case you ever wondered why a large number of your ancestors disappeared during a certain period in history, this might help. Epidemics have always had a great influence on people - and thus influencing as well, the genealogists trying to trace them. Many cases of people disappearing from records can be traced to their dying during an epidemic or moving away from the affected area. Some of the major epidemics in the United States are listed below: 1657_____Boston Measles 1687_____Boston Measles 1690_____New York Yellow Fever 1713_____Boston Measles 1729_____Boston Measles 1732-3___Worldwide Influenza 1738_____South Carolina Smallpox 1739-40__Boston Measles 1747_____CT,NY,PA,SC Measles 1759_____N. 1. Pictorial History Book
    2. Betty Sharp
    3. There have been several questions appearing on the list asking about the pictorial history book the Rowan County Historical Society is publishing. Here is, from the current society president, an explanation for the reason the book is late in being released. Hi All, It seems we have run into a few hurdles which have caused the finished date to drag on past the date we were originally told which was Spring 2000. We are getting calls and inquiries in every way and are now sending out cards to notify those who have already paid for their book. We feel we owe them an explanation so here goes. There seems to be a little more to it than just copying a few pictures on a Xerox machine and stapling them together and it's done. After advertising for people to donate pictures for the book we had very little donated and then as we got closer to the deadline date of submission we received over 2,000. Out of those we had to sort through the overwhelming amount and take enough out until we had the required 750 pictures that the publisher would only allow us to submit. This was not an easy task for our committee as there were always disagreements over the 200-300 pictures we had just taken out that were too good to take out. But we were only allowed the 750. Then we tried the task of selling pages to families and businesses. Again we set a deadline and again after struggling to convince people to purchase a page in memory of loved ones or for whatever reason, at the deadline date we were overwhelmed with requests from people who wanted us to wait until they could get their page put together. We were thrilled to have such interest in families of Rowan County. In working with the publisher there were some problems with communication at first which we later discovered there had been a changeover within the company. We chose to continue with the same publishing company as we were satisfied we would still be delivered a quality product. After settling on the cover design, writing the first pages of introduction and other finishing touches, it is finally being put together and they are now sending us a packet at a time to edit for mistakes. This takes time but again we all want a quality book. Next will be to send the edited product to the printer. We apologize for the delays but we never realized all of the work that had to go into putting this together. Our committee has worked very hard, and we will honor all orders. If anyone is dissatisfied with the time it has taken to get this book finished, we will gladly give them a refund. I apologize for all of the delays. There was never any intention of giving false promises, we just never realized it would take this long. We cannot give an exact date the book will be finished and ready to be mailed out but will give an update on the progress if anyone wishes. My email is ahsurmont@kih.net or snail mail to: Helen Surmont 660 Pleasant Valley Morehead, Ky 40351

    2. I am trying to find the evidence to prove Hannah BASFORD b. ca. 1815 who married William R. STATON b. 1798 Va. is not the Hannah CASSELDINE CHURCH that keeps appearing on all the records. >From the date of Hannah's birth I do believe she is the daughter of John b. ca. 1790 and Elizabeth ???BASFORD [some say Elizabeth was a NORRIS) On the LDS records I found HANNAH BASFORD who was christened 29 May 1815 St. Michales Coventry, Warwick England. It also stated her parents were John and Elizabeth Basford. Is this HANNAH? The dates match....the parents match? Any input will be appreciated. I still have no date of Marriage for William STATON to HANNAH? I also think this is the same HANNAH STATON who married my GGrandfather Thomas Thornburg 18 Jan. 1880 [his wife Eliza had died in 1877] However, when he died in 1896....there is no mention of a wife...just his children? 1. Duplicated & Triplicated Tombstones on Confederate Graves
    2. Knott Historical Society
    3. Attention Fellow List Members: Eastern Kentucky has been unfortunate to have had a mass ordering of tombstones from the Veteran's Affairs in Washington, D.C. wherein several veterans and non-veterans of the Confederacy or of any war at all now have two and sometimes even three headstones for the same man. Several complaints have been lodged here at the Knott County Historical Society from those who have the misconception that our Society has something to do with this. We do not! The complaints arise from the fact that many cemetery owners and family members have not been contacted in regards to this practice here in Knott County. Recently some stones placed in the Carr Memorial Cemetery are now taking up two distinct plots to allow a place for an additional tombstone for men who already have tombstones, one of which already had a military designated tombstone. Some complaints have been registered with us here at the Knott Society wherein Confederate markers have been placed on Union soldiers' graves much to the chagrin of the families involved. This abuse is a flagrant disregard for the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs' policy which specifically states the following: "Do not complete this application if the veteran's grave is already marked with a private monument even though the veteran's military data is not shown. Applicant must certify the grave is unmarked and a Government headstone or marker is preferred to a privately purchased headstone or marker. This restriction applies to companion markers. Companion markers identify two or more decendents buried, or to be buried, in the same or adjoining graves. A grave is considered marked if a monument displays the decendent's name and dates of birth and/or death, even though the veteran's military data is not shown. Applicant may be anyone having knowledge of the deceased. Headstones or markers furnished remain the property of the United States Government and may not be used for any purpose other than to honor the memory of the decedent for whom the headstone or marker is issued. A Government provided headstone or marker may not be used as a footstone or to supplement a private monument, or be affixed to an existing inscribed monument. I certify the headstone or marker will be installed on the veteran's unmarked grave at no expense to the government and all statements made are true and correct to the best of my knowledge." - Application for standard Government Headstone or Marker 40-1330 Veterans' Affairs. Please consider the above before signing any forms allowing a tombstone to be ordered in your name. If you have a complaint, please register it with or send photos of the duplicated and triplicated stones to: Office of Memorial Programs Dept. of Veterans Affairs 810 Vermont Avenue, N.W. 1. This is my family I believe.......
    2. "His Own Grandfather" This is how a man figures out the complex relationship of his own much mixed up family. He is Edmund Thomas of Saltillo, Ohio, and says: " I met a young widow with a grown-up step-daughter and I married the widow. Then my father met my step-daughter and married her. That made my wife the the mother-in-law of her father-in-law, and made my step-daughter my step-mother, and my father became my step-son. See? Then my step-mother, the step-daughter of my wife, had a son. That boy was of course my brother because he is my father's son, but he was also the son of my wife's daughter, and therefore her grandson. That made me the grandfather of my step-brother. Then my wife had a son. My mother-in-law, the step-sister of my son, is also his grandmother, because he is her step-son's child. My father is the brother-in-law of my child because his step-sister is my wife. I am the brother of my own son who is also the child of my grandmother. I am my mother's brother-in-law, my wife is her own child's aunt, my son is my father's nephew and I am my own grandfather."

    1. Amanda Brown??
    2. I still need help locating the parents/siblings of Amanda Brown [not the one who married John Botts LACY] My Amanda was b. ca. 1814 had the following children. [1] Elizabeth b. 1835 m Hezekiah HANEY [2] Mary b. 1842 m. Isaac HARDIN [3] Permelia Ann b. 1844 m. William Augustus"Gus" McKENZIE [4] James H. 1847 m. Francis "Teed" WELLS She might have been related to Amanda who married the LACY guy ...how I don't know . They were both in the 1850 MORGAN Co. Census. One of James Brown's decendants said the children were all fathered by a man known as Dr. or "Doc" WILSON and that he bought a farm for James and Permelia at Mordecia? on Elk Fork Creek. Apparently there is lots of confusion about this family due to a book written by Henry WELLS. He wrote in his book that Fancis "Teed" Wells had married James BROWN and that James Brown was the son of John BROWN and Abigail CASSITY. This is untrue.
