1. George Ann SCAGGS b. 1883 Lawrence Co. KY
2. Teri Pettit
3. I am trying to identify the parents of George Ann SCAGGS born ca 1883, reportedly in Lawrence Co., Ky. At age 15 she married John Wesley BROWN, son of Coleman BROWN and Martha DILLON, in Rowan Co., Ky. Rowan Co. marriage book 3, p. 92, records marriage on 4 Oct 1898 of John Wesley Brown, age 24, residence Wyatt, occupation farmer, born Elliott Co., parents born in Ky, to George Ann Scaggs, age 15, residence Wyatt, born and father born Lawrence Co., Ky, mother born Johnson Co., Ky. Bond surety by J. M. Lovelace, at Arch White's by F. M. Crisp, witnesses James Loveless and Floyd Conley. (Lovelace/ Loveless is really spelled both ways on the marriage record.) Since George Ann was born in 1883, and married before 1900, she will not appear in any census with her parents. (Although the 1900 census might eliminate some possibilities if they have other children with conflicting birthdates, or if the number of children listed is equal to the total number of living children they had by 1900.) The most likely candidates seem to be Lewis C. SCAGGS who m. Nancy LESTER about 1866 in Lawrence Co., and his brother Andrew SCAGGS who m. Linia S. SCAGGS on 23 Oct 1878 in Lawrence Co. Both of them were in Rowan Co. by 1900. Their other brothers Daniel D., Henry C., and William, who also moved to Rowan County before 1900, all seem to be eliminated on the basis of having no "child gaps". But it is possible that George Ann is a more distant relative.

1. Merry Christmas! Away in a Manger--Revisited

3. Dear Friends and Fellow Family History Researchers, May we always remember He is the reason for the season. May our research efforts be blessed in the coming year and our brick walls come tumbling down! Merry Chistmas to all and to all a good night! Dianna Gilliam justpeachy@greenhills.net Away in a Manger, Revisited Away in a manger our Saviour once lay, and that is the reason we have Christmas day; He came down from Heaven to live here below to suffer and die because He loves us so. The shepherds first found Him on that starry night; An angel spoke to them and they saw His light. They knelt in the hay there so fragrant and warm and worshipped our Saviour that first Christmas morn. Three kings came to praise Him and gifts to Him gave, and to all His children He then showed the way to serve Him and others by day and by night, and love God, the Father, with heart, mind, and might. He taught us to know what is wrong and what's right... to pray without ceasing and seek further light; To love everybody, the weak and the strong; and ever remember to Him we belong. Let us then be worthy in spirit and truth, to guide others to Him, our lives be the proof; To bring souls to Jesus that they might be free, and praise, ever praise Him, where e'er we may be! Away in a manger, asleep in the hay, our Saviour's the reason for Christmas today. 3. The 1910 census of Rowan County Kentucky lists several QUESENBERRY and DALTON families who had recently moved from Virginia (even the babies were listed as born in Virginia.) I suspect they were from Carroll County, Virginia. 3. but totally serious in a hopefully fun way! You have to sing some of these words fast to fit them into the melody but I think we all remember the tune to "All I Want for Christmas (is my two front teeth). I'm going to mail this one to several folks who have had me waiting for months (and some even YEARS!) to receive promised information! Presented with much love to and for my fellow genealogists with prayers that we will all continue to have our efforts blessed as we endeavor to identify our kindred dead and forge stronger family bonds. It is such a small world and by working together we can break down our brick walls and make so much progress! Happy hunting and Happy holidays! Dianna Gilliam justpeachy@greenhills.net Researching ADAMS, BARNES, BEECH, CONN, BLACK, PETITT, KEGLEY, SHELTON, THOMPSON, HELDERBRAND, BUTLER and many, many other connecting lines! All I Want for Christmas All I want for Christmas are your family group sheets, Your family group sheets, your family group sheets. Gee, if I could only have your family group sheets, Then I would have a Merry Christmas! It's been quite awhile since we first talked And you said that you would send me information… Gosh, oh gee, how happy I'd be I'm not a fan of one-way communication! I don't mean to be a pest or harass you, Harass you, harass you, I don't mean to be a pest or harass you, But I really need those family group sheets! I need to know was it Jack or Joe, Or was it Fred, George, Bill, or was it Uncle Francis? Who was your great grandpa? Are we related after all? I need help filling in fam'ly tree branches! I'll gladly reimburse you copy fees and postage costs, Copy fees and postage costs, copy fees and postage costs. I don't expect something for nothing, I have much to share. Collaborating will make a Merry Christmas! Perhaps you think you haven't much I need to know, But I assure you every little piece helps! It takes more than just names that match and dates that seem to fit To put together an accurate family history! So much has been lost with the passage of time And the failure of most folks to keep in touch. Our lives might seem quite dull and of no import But one can't know which mundane things will mean so much! One day, when down the road our bones have turned to dust, Have turned to dust, have turned to dust. Our family will know how we lived if we will only learn to share Pieces of ourselves through family history. It's true some may say, she was a wacky ole dame, Who seemed to care more for the dead than for the living. But time will tell, if she spent her time well Please remember it is the season to be giving! I hope you're not offended by my begging song, My begging song, my begging song. I hope you'll note my address and you'll send ASAP Family history to wish me Merry Christmas! 1. NAMING PATTERNS
2. OLD NAMING PATTERNS >The first son was named after the father's father. >The second son was named after the mother's father. >The third son was named after the father. >The fourth son was named after the fathers eldest brother. >The first daughter was named after the mother's mother. >The second daughter was named after the father's mother. >The third daughter was named after the mother. >The fourth daughter was named after the mothers eldest sister, always. ALSO: 2nd wife's oldest daughter named after the first wife, using her full name. Children after those listed above were usually named after a favorite relative with some possible exceptions: If a child died in infancy, a later child might be given the same name. When a newly ordained minister baptized his first child, if that child were a boy, he would be named for the minister, if a girl, she would receive his surname as her middle name. If a child were fostered, usually because of being orphaned, he may be named for the foster parent. If you are sure that you have the earliest birth or baptisms and that they are in the correct order then, if John's first son is named Charles and his second daughter is named Elizabeth then John's parents must be Charles and Elizabeth. http://www.geocities.com/juliacarollevesque/ Julia And Paul's Homepage Julia Carol GREGORY Lévesque Born In Dayton Ohio Live in Virginia Beach Virginia Genealogy is more than a Hobby It is a labor of My Love! © ™

3. The Rowan County, KY Historical Society is in its final stages of surveying nearly 300 cemeteries in our county. Publication is next with a possible 3-volume set of books or a CD in the works. Every cemetery will be listed along with specific directions in finding each. For most, a picture will be included as well as the GPS (Global Position) location along with the names of the surveyors. A special feature will be an all-name index to locate specific burials. Right now a list is being compiled for those wishing to place an order for either the book set or CD. No prices have been set yet so the order list is tentative until further details are described. For more information contact me or the historical society. Address: Rowan County Historical Society P.O. Box 60 Morehead, KY 40351 Thanks, Betty Sharp

I was asked by a distant cousin this morning if I knew anything about the reputed murder of Deputy Sheriff Stewart BAUMGARDNER by one Patrick CONN during what was apparently known as the 'Rowan County War' in 1885. Stewart is said to be mentioned in a folk song about the feud. So far I don't have Patrick CONN in my database but if he is from the area I am sure he will fil in sooner or later. Thanks!
