I have the following info on a civil war record: W. T. Lawrence Confederate Kentucky 3 Kentucky Mounted Infantry 3rd Regiment, Kentucky Mounted Infantry Comp M Rank Private Film M377roll 8 My questions and comments follow 1. exactly where does one find these films and are they available thru a mail request? 2. exactly what additional info can I expect to find (if any) in the microfilm records? I am not absolutely certain that this is my ancestor and would need addl info to positively ID him. Also does anyone know if this is a area that people from Rockcastle, Lincoln and Pulaski Counties would have chosen? I would be very grateful for addl info or suggestions you could give. Hi, Jeanie, Here is the site that you can check for soldiers and their units. This site will give the info that you have below. You can go to the http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Lair/3680/cw/cw.html and, then you can go to the National Archives for more detail on the records the govt. kept in order to pay the soldiers. I got these records for two relatives and they gave details about the soldiers physical appearance and where they were. You can also see if that person or their widow applied for a pension and those pension papers will tell you all kinds of good family history, parents, place they were born, etc. http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/ Good luck! Hi If someone has the book with the index for the confederate pension applications and can give you the pension number for your ancestor, you can order the film from the LDS Family History Centers. Just last week I had one for a soldier from Morgan Co. Ky. The pensions are listed by application number, not alphabetically. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=titlefilmnotes&columns=*%2C0%2C0&titleno=558566&disp=Civil+War+pension+application++ I know that is long and you may have to copy and paste in sections, but that is the link to the page.
