As someone who has review actual records, I can tell you the following: I would go to a regional or state library. These two places would most likely have the rolls that you need. Depending on what was recorded, there could be a trove of genealogical information!! This might include photocopies of marriage and death certificates, application for widow's pension, children - stuff like that. You really need to go thru each piece of paper that is included to determine if it is useful to you. I had a great great grandfather that served in the Civil War. I think he had about 12 pages of information. I had another great great grandfather who served in the Spanish-American War. I was shocked that there were 617 pages of information on this gentleman, only 100 were of genealogical interest! Another way for information to be found is to see if he is in the roll for the Sons of the Confederate Army (I think that's the name). I wish you the best of luck in your search!!
