    3. Jeanie, When I discovered that my relatives, Barnet Reed and Green and James Slaughter, of Rockcastle Co. had all changed their names after the Civil War, I researched the neighbors where they showed up on the census. They seemed to always go to where family were. You can take their census neighbor names to Rootsweb and then with the Index, look for the Lawrence name to see if there is a distant relative in that particular family. You can build on your knowledge that way. You can also find more researchers for your relative and someone will have more and different info than you. We found a family member who had a notation in family papers about the murder of the Slaughter father. So, we had one more new clue to go with. And, then by accident, a divorce petition showed that Green Slaughter had an indictment against him for murder. I haven't been able to get to Frankfort to the Ky Library to find the indictment, but that will help me with further research. I think if you discover exactly why your Lawrence changed his name, you will get more info. Any petition papers for war money will be a good source for info, list of witnesses to say that the petition is accurate. Sometimes those witnesses are family. For some reason I have not been sucessful with posting this on the Lincoln site. > > Of primary interest to me is on page 218 about the Lawrence family. I would like to locate the person who gave this info for the book. Of particular interest is the statement concerning one of the children of William T Lawrence and Almira Griffin Lawrence. It states that child no 7 Robert lived in Sapulpa, Ok, changed his name and never returned to Kentucky. He is my person of interest and while I do have a lot of info on him from abt 1989 when he married in OK and of the rest of his life under the name Robert Edward Goff, I do not have much on his life in Ky and why and when he left. > > Also of interest is info on his parents William T and Almira Griffin Lawrence and also in Grover"Gofer" Lawrence. I have been doing a lot of work on this family and I have located them on most census and a few other records for both the Lawrence and Griffin families. But here again, in the book, it states that William T Lawrence left home about age 12 to 'find his own way in life'. I would like to know where he went and why. William was the son of Rueben Lawrence and his first wife. I have not been able to find the name of this 1st wife of Reuben and mother of William anywhere. Additionally, it states that William's wife Almira died and was buried in Missouri and I would like to find out exactly where that is. > > I would so appreciate anyone who could give me addl info or refer me to someone who would be knowledgeable about this family. I am planning a trip to the area in Oct and would greatly appreciate being able to locate family landmarks such as cemeteries, homesteads, churches and any thing else that was related to these families > > Will look forward to hearing any comments, suggestions and info > > Thanks > Jeanie Goff > widowgoff40@yahoo.com > > > > --------------------------------- > You rock.
