The Rockcastle County, Kentucky, website is superb! What an incredible job the coordinator, Jennifer Fish does! It is an absolute treasure house of information. It's a royal feast for those searching for ancestors and connections. Jennifer provides innovative ways to preserve the county's history. There are the usual links to genealogical information. But Jennifer goes a step further. She provides space for old photographs that make the history come to life. Families have their own page where photos can be displayed and family information shared. The county at large has its own photo gallery. There you will find pictures of houses and landmarks important to the county's history. Are you looking for information on education in Rockcastle County? Did great-grandpa attend a particular school? Examine the pictures of the old schoolhouses on the "Education" page. You can almost hear the teacher's bell calling reluctant children back to class. If you are lucky, you will find the picture of your grandfather's school. And even if you don't find his school in particular, you will have a fantastic idea what that school might have looked like. In creating this site, Jennifer has thought outside the box. The result is amazing. Let me share one example of her innovative design. At this site you will find a link to local funeral homes. Click on one of those links and you just might see photographs of an old hearse, the very one that carried great-grandmother to the grave you have been attempting to find. Suddenly family history lives, and genealogy becomes more than a list of names and dates. Do you want to see what was happening in the county in 1908? Go to the archive copies of the local paper and read for yourself what that ancestor of yours was doing. What did Uncle Charlie pay for a good horse? Who was running for County Sheriff? Did the Mt. Vernon ball team win? Jennifer doesn't just tell you where to go to begin searching for these newspapers. She provides them right on site. What an amazing wealth of accessible records! There's a page where individuals can submit death certificates so that other researchers can get information on site without waiting for that certified copy from Vital Statistics. Have you traced your family's genealogy? Jennifer has a place for you to submit that, too. This site is a researcher's dream. Searching for who is buried where? Click on the Cemetery page. Each cemetery with information currently available is listed with names and information taken directly from tombstones. And if there are pictures of those tombstones, those photographs are provided, too! I could go on forever about the contents of this site, but attention needs to be paid to its organization as well. This site is incredibly user friendly. It's easy to navigate, and there are no surprises. Jennifer provides exactly the information described in each category. What a relief after searching other county sites which sometimes hide information behind obscure headings. Jennifer is diligent about updating. In fact I'm amazed at how hard she works to keep the site current. And oh the joy of those little notifiers that say "updated" and "new!" Visit the site daily and you know exactly where to find the new research, photographs, archive newspapers, etc. As if all of this is not wealth enough, Jennifer has created a beautiful site as well. There's nothing drab about this site. It's altogether lovely! Check out the Rockcastle website. You are in for a delightful, informative, and downright "fun" experience. In my book, it's the best, and Jennifer deserves the grateful appreciation of genealogists and historians alike. How grateful I am that my ancestors were smart enough to live in Rockcastle County. Because of Jennifer Fish and her fantastic work, they have been so much easier to find and to place in the context of the times in which they lived. Thanks, Jennifer!
