All, I have just completed a book on the early history of Mt. Vernon and parts of Rockcastle County entitled "Three Springs and a Wilderness Station." More information (and a short preview) can be found on my Web site at: http://www.jeffrenner.net/genealogy/3springs.htm You can also order it from the site above, or, if you are local and are going to be at the festival this coming weekend--Friday and Saturday--you can get one from me there (and save shipping costs). The special introductory price will be good through April 26. Thanks, Jeff Renner
Very nice, Jan. Not sure if you knew it (or if it's of any interest to you--no Bullocks in it), but I have a new Mt. Vernon/Rockcastle book out. Hi, Jerry, There are two Capitola Slaughters! Imagine that! They are both on the same website by a descendant of John Hampton Slaughter. I had to look again, because the info I gave you is correct, except that the birthdates are off between the women. I wondered about that, but soon forgot while I was looking further into that family. Thanks for all that info. I see you have a John B. Cook and wonder if he is related to Edward Slaughter's wife, Dicey Cook, daughter of William Cook out of Surry Co. NC. No, it doesn't ring a bell, but there are many, many mysteries with Edward Slaughter. He was murdered in 1865, right after the war ended and we couldn't find anymore info. We think his son, Ned, was also murdered. That's why the rest of the Slaughters moved out of Rockcastle Co. And, Edward's in-laws were involved in the Garrard Co. Hi, Jerry, I've always wondered who Katy Slaughter was and have come across her name several times. My Slaughters were Edward and Dicey Cook Slaughter, out of Stokes Co. NC. They came into Rockcastle Co. around mid 1820s and lived on the Roundstone watercourse and are buried in Fairview Cemetery, which used to be their farm. There sons lived in Madison, Garrard and Rockcastle, then on to Marion Co. I'm thinking that Edward was related to John Hampton Slaughter whose Slaughters were in Mercer Co. Does any of these names ring a bell? At one time I found a Brother Slaughter and Joseph Slaughter on the Garrard Co. tax list, but didn't know who they were. Rose, Are your Slaughter relatives connected to the Katy Slaughter (born Dec 14, 1878 in Crab Orchard Lincoln County, Kentucky) who married John Zackary Carson (born Feb 23, 1874 in Crab Orchard Lincoln County, Kentucky); and her sister Capitola Slaughter who married David Carson Holman (born Nov 26, 1878 in Rockcastle County, Kentucky)? While I don’t have anything for the Rockcastle County Lawrence you mention, if the Grover Lawrence is Grover Logan Lawrence I have some information. Grover Logan Lawrence lived on the adjoining farm when I was growing up in Lincoln County in the 1940’s and 50’s. I believe his granddaughter still lives there. Jeanie, When I discovered that my relatives, Barnet Reed and Green and James Slaughter, of Rockcastle Co. had all changed their names after the Civil War, I researched the neighbors where they showed up on the census. They seemed to always go to where family were. You can take their census neighbor names to Rootsweb and then with the Index, look for the Lawrence name to see if there is a distant relative in that particular family. You can build on your knowledge that way. You can also find more researchers for your relative and someone will have more and different info than you. We found a family member who had a notation in family papers about the murder of the Slaughter father. So, we had one more new clue to go with. And, then by accident, a divorce petition showed that Green Slaughter had an indictment against him for murder. I haven't been able to get to Frankfort to the Ky Library to find the indictment, but that will help me with further research. I think if you discover exactly why your Lawrence changed his name, you will get more info. Any petition papers for war money will be a good source for info, list of witnesses to say that the petition is accurate. Sometimes those witnesses are family. Hello folks, Spring at last - for most of us - some of my friends are still battling flood waters. May God help them.... I just finished another Buford Website up-date and want to invite you all to come by and take a look. I reconstructed another Buford line that encompass eight states - from Florida to Kansas and Texas. Over 40 pages in my Microsoft Word. It is a monster and took me a long time in researching. I want to thank all of you who gave me a helping hand along the way - you know who you are.... Hope you all had a Great Winter and are now starting to enjoy Spring. We here in Colorado have sure had our share of the soft White stuff. Snow fall this year is over 200% of the norm. Our rivers will be crowding their banks soon. Take care everyone. Fern K. I am a worker in my local LDS Family History Center. The church has a subscription to Footnote.com. This is a company that is working with the National Archives and other agencies to scan documents and post these records online. You could try going to your local FHC and see if Footnote.com has this record on their site. There are many different Civil War records available there, and your record might show up. I hope this helps. Hi, One more thing about the LDS films. Check and see if you have an LDS church near you, and if so, you can have them order the films and you can go there to view them. There is a rental fee.
