    3. Lisa, Thank you for the information. Yes, I descend from the Rockcastle Bethurems. My line didn't stick around for much more than a generation however. Benjamin, the original Bethurem in Rockcastle, is my 4great-grandfather. I descend through his son, William and wife Mary McLemore. 2. Jenny Bethurem
    3. Hi all, I'm the new list admin for KYROCKCA-L. Hopefully at the bottom of this message you will see a short note that includes a link to my homepage - The Bethurem Family Homepage. This short note is called a tagline. I can have 10 different taglines for this list that rotate around with each new message to the list (only one tagline per email, you won't see all 10 at once.) I'd like to extend an invitation for those of you with websites that have a Rockcastle county connection to include your website in the taglines. If you are interested, please email me privately with name of your website, the address or URL of your site and the Rockcastle county surnames your researching. If I get more than 10 websites, I'll either try to combine 2 on one tagline or I'll just change them occasionally. Jenny jenny@bethurem.com

    3. If, you have not already heard the news, the Kentucky Historical Society is again looking for a new director. As a member of the historical society, and a patron who spends several hours at the facility each week, I'm concerned with the direction the society seems to be taking. A couple of years ago the historical society moved into a new facility which ranks at the top or very near the top of the finest research facilities in the country. Unfortunately, since the move to the new building it appears as though our membership has dropped! In the time that I have been using the library, never once have I seen any mention of the Kentucky Historical Society, its library, or the many services that are provided in ANY of the genealogical magazines that I have and do continue to subscribe too. I have attended conferences, and seminars outside the state in which we should at the very least be represented by a speaker! It seems for whatever reason we are a very well kept secret! Interest in our society needs to be revived! It seems as though the time has come for a director who wants the society to grow and expand. I for one would like to see not only the first floor of the library stack area filled with books, but also the addition of a second floor! The last director was brought in from out of state, which to me doesn't make a lot of sense. It is time that the director of the historical society is a Kentuckian, with knowledge of the history of the state, a vast knowledge of the genealogical holdings within the state, the ability to understand the needs of genealogical, and historical researchers, and the ability to work with our state legislature for the benefit of the society. I wish to nominate Mr. Ron D. Bryant as the new director of the Kentucky Historical Society. Ron D. Bryant not only has seventeen years of experience with the library, is a ninth generation Kentuckian, but is also extremely knowledgeable of the history and genealogical holdings in Kentucky. He is a noted librarian and lecturer on Kentucky, having written over eighty articles, and is the author of Kentucky History - An Annotated Bibliography published in 2000. If Ron D. Bryant becomes director of the historical society, he has stated that he will continue to help patrons with their research in the library. He believes that the director needs to be aware of the patrons needs, and that we must increase our membership. As I mentioned above, I wish to nominate Ron D. Bryant for this position, but I can't do so with your help. If, you agree with me, please send letters to the following gentlemen advising them to name Ron D. Bryant Director of the Kentucky Historical Society: Selection Committee c/o Mr. Walter Baker 917 S. Green Street Glasgow, KY 42141-2086 Selection Committee c/o Mr. Richard L. Taylor 335 Holt Lane Frankfort, KY 40601 Selection Committee c/o Mr. Thomas D. Clark 175 Kentucky Ave. Lexington, KY 40502 Many thanks for your help. Shelby A. Williams

    2. Dear List and Charles F. Seals, The directions to the George Smith Cemetery that were given to Mr. Seals' question were very close to being correct. "Start at the intersection of State Road #25 and County Route #1004 south of Mt. Vernon, KY., follow #1004 .6 mile to small dirt road on left, park car, climb up steep hillside about 150' to cemetery on the bluff." Instead of the small dirt road and cemetery being on the left, it is on the RIGHT. I'm sure that there was just a typo in the Cemetery Records book. I had my Dad literally map the directions out for me because I was very curious to where this cemetery was after reading how close it was to my childhood home. Janetta McLemore Begley

    2. Melissa Hohler
    3. Hi, everyone! New subscriber to the list. Looking for any information on the ANDREW K. KING family, wife JULIA A. Andrew was born in NC around 1826-27 (no location known); Julia born approx. 1822-23. I have seen sources say she was born in NC and KY. This family is listed in the 1880 census, living in the North District of the county; some children listed are (going by memory): Lucius, Elijah, William, Wilson. No girls listed on this census but I know from my g-pa that there was Mary (his g-ma), Mollie and Elnor <sp>. Mary married a man named Joe TILFREY, supposedly a Cherokee Indian. Most of the TILFREY family are buried in Crab Orchard Cemetary. Am trying to find date of death for Andrew and Julia plus a burial location. Any thoughts on where I might go? How far back are the records in Mt. Vernon? Can I obtain birth/death/marriage info there? Thanks in advance for your help. mel

    3. Yup, one amazing find, thanks to my "Christmas Gift" of Ancestry.com census data. I found two interesting facts on my ex-father-in-law ~ now deceased. 1. I found that my ex-father-law was born 6 years before the family thought he was. His social security records, headstone, death certificate and the entire family said he was born in 1914. I found him on the 1910 census, and he was a 1 1/2 years old. hmmm-m-m-m-m-m 2. I also found him on the 1930 census, 21 years old, living at home and divorced! I found my ex-mother-in-law in the exact opposite side of the state, living at home and 9 years old. So he wasn't married or divorced from her! According to the family, they met when the family picked him up hitch-hiking and they were married soon afterwards. They married when she was 18 years old. How's that for a Christmas Gift???? Or even an amazing find? I told my son this is why I love genealogy!! Happy New Year everyone! . . . . . and yes, he was born in Rockcastle County ~ Mt. Vernon. William Bowman, born to Charles Jackson Bowman and Clevia Frankie Hiatt. Charles died in 1911, so William could NOT have been born in 1914 ~ right????
