    3. TIP #447 - WHERE TO LOOK ON THE INTERNET Before continuing with the US Army casualities, I thought it might be time to do a general information post of my favorite sites. There are thousands anymore it seems, thankfully! This will sound like an infomercial I know! My favorite website is ancestry.com. As you know, to gain access to all the files, there is a fee involved, some is free. I have found over the past couple of years that it is well worth the cost. I started out with a basic subscription, then added the U S Census Images and Indexes. Ancestry is constantly adding to this site and I have found a lot of illusive family members with this addition. Then I added the newspaper collection and that has paid for itself! More and more newspaper images are going on line weekly, and they recently added just where I needed help - Illinois. I have spent almost 3 weeks part time reading the papers and found over 1,500 references in the old papers that I had never seen and likely would never see. There is an advanced reader that allows you to go right to the spot where the name is shown, pan the page, print the whole page or just the article I need. It has been wonderful. To investigate for yourself, just go to acestry.com. Be advised that not all states' newspapers have been added yet and there still are very few KY papers on line. Another site I use rather frequently Family Search Internet Genealogy Service at: http://www.familysearch.org/ . This is the Mormon Church site It is a free site and easy to navigate. My third site is Gendex WWW Genealogical Index at: http://www.gendex.com/gendex/. This is a site maintained by Gene Stark, very easy to navigate and with a lot of family tree data. If I'm looking to find if a particular county in a state has a county query list I check out: http://lists.rootsweb.com/ Rootsweb (who runs this list and others that I manage) is always free and they have county lists, ethnic lists, specialized list - the page shown will direct you to the area of interest you have. There is never a fee to subscribe to any rootsweb list. http://lists.rootsweb.com/ The rootsweb surname lists are at: http://rsl.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/rslsql.cgi. Here you can search for a surname or add your own so others can find you. If you looking for old maps go to: http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/reference/maps/main.asp?rc=locale%7E& us=0 Go to: http://www.kygenweb.net/. This is the Kentucky Genweb site and will point you to books for sale, addresses for county clerks, cemeteries, newspapers on microfilm, soundex converters and many other topics. The Kentucky Cemetery Database is found at: http://catalog.kyhistory.org/help/Cem_Database_Intro.htm. This is a searchable database of cemeteries and burials that have been submitted and you can submit your own names for others to find. For Kentucky formation maps go to: http://www.segenealogy.com/kentucky/ky_maps.htm. This will also search other states. Kentucky in the Military can be found at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kymil/ National Archives Records can be seen at: http://www.archives.gov/. It shows all the order forms also. Rootsweb's Social Security death records are at: http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi USGenWeb search page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ussearch.htm. Here you can search by name within a particular state. A good Revolutionary War site: http://members.aol.com/TeacherNet/Revolutionarywar.html#Terms An Animated Atlas is found at: http://www.animatedatlas.com/index.html Kentucky Department of Libraries and Archives: http://www.kdla.state.ky.us/ There are also county message boards where the following can be found - queries, marriages, wills, deeds, Bible records, etc. etc. Go to http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=admin.board&r=rw&p= and work your way through to the state and county of your preference. This is just a drop in the bucket but the ones I use most frequently. I hope this will be of a help to you! (c) 10 July 2003, Sandra K. Gorin, All Rights Reserved.
