    3. TIP #553 KY TOWNS REVISITED - EADSTON THROUGH ELIZABETH EADSTON P O - Rowan Co. See Hays Crossing. EADSVILLE: Wayne Co. 4 miles NNW of Monticello. Post office opened June 1890 with James E EADS, a local merchant, post master. He named it for himself. Had a son, Joel S Eads who moved the post office to his store; discontinued in 1950. EARLINGTON, Hopkins Co. Founded by St Bernard Mining Co in 1870; post office named for John Baylis EARL who was an attorney there and a pioneer in the development of the coal industry. The first post office to be opened here was HALL (1852-1863) named for Caleb HALL. Earlington post office opened Apr 1871, Thomas J McEUEN post master. EAST ALLEN, Floyd Co. See Allen. EAST BERNSTADT, Laurel Co - see Bernstadt EAST FORK, Boyd. See Cannonsburg. EAST FORK or BRIDGEPORT, Metcalfe Co. Located at where KY 544 crosses the East Fork of Little Barren River, 5 miles NE of Edmonton. Post Office opened Aug 1853, named for a covered bridge over the river here. EAST HICKMAN, Fayette & Jessamine Co. On KY 1974 and East Hickman Creek. Named for Rev. William HICKMAN, pioneer Baptist minister. Post office opened in 1876 and closed in 1906. EAST McDOWELL, Floyd Co. See McDowell. EASTON, Hancock Co. 13 miles SSE of Hawesville; named for Samuel EASTON who established a post office in his home March 1893. Closed in 1913. EAST PINEVILLE, Bell Co. No current post office; 1 ½ miles SE of Pineville. Post Office opened Dec 1925 and called JAYEM for J[ohn] M[arshall] ROBINSON, Sr. EAST POINT, Johnson Co. Now located 3 ½ miles S of Paintsville, bur first located at the mouth of Little Paint Creek across the river from Blockhouse Bottom - an old Big Sandy settlement. This area was originally settled by the AUXIER and GREER families. William T HAGER, the first post master. EAST UNION, Nicholas Co. 5 miles SSE of Carlisle, area founded about 1800 and named by a congregation of Dunkards or German Baptists from Rowan Co NC. Was in operation from 1854-1857. Will BRAMBLETT opened another post office in 1899 and called it Bramblett which closed in 1904. EASTWOOD, Jefferson Co. 1 mile N of I64 and 17 miles E of the courthouse in Louisville. Post office likely named for the community by 1851, there was a Methodist church by that name at that time. Or it could have been named for John EASTWOOD who was a member of William HARROD's militia 1779-80. There was another post office on the Shelby RR (part of the L&N later) on the TAYLOR land, established July 1872, Edward G TAYLOR, post master. Both were known as Eastwood by 1881. ECHOLS, Ohio Co. This is a coal mining community on the Illinois Central Gulf RR, 1 ½ miles E of Rockport on the Green River and just north of the present Western KY Parkway, 8 ½ miles SSW of Hartford. Town established in 1874 when a Mr. ECHOLS from IL opened the local mine. Post office established Nov 1881 with Andrew DUNCAN, post master. The town is no longer there. EDDY GROVE, Caldwell. See Princeton. EDDYVILLE, Lyon Co. County seat. David WALKER acquired a patent for this land after 1790; he laid out the town and named it for the large eddies in the river there. Matthew LYON in 1880 brought Vermont settlers here and purchased lots from Walker. It became the county seat of Livingston Co, then Caldwell Co in 1809. One half of the town was moved 1959-62 after the old town site was secured for the Barkley Lake impoundment. EDEN, Martin Co. See Inez. EDGOTEN, Christian Co. It was a stop on the Tennessee Central (now IL Central Gulf), 13 miles S of Hopkinsville. Post office established Mar 1906, James A McKENZIE, post master. Named for its location by the state line at the very "edge of Tennessee". It might have been known earlier as Edge-of-Tenn and later shortened to current name. Post office closed 1922. EDMONTON, Metcalfe Co. County seat, 1 mile S of the Cumberland Parkway. Named for Edmund Pendleton ROGERS (1762-1843) who was a Revolutionary War officer born in VA who surveyed and laid off the town and much of the lands south of the Green Rivers for the soldiers and officers of the Revolutionary War. Post office established Feb 1830. EDNA, Magoffin Co. 5 miles NW of Salyersville. Post office established Nov 1900 and named by Kate PATTON for her daughter, Edna Patton AMYX. EDSEL, Elliott Co. Was located 11 ½ miles E of Sandy Hook. Wade BLEVINS opened the post office in 1929 and he wanted to name it for his daughter Jewell; but that name had already been taken. So he chose Edsel who was a local resident and also his nephew. Locally, the town was known as Blaine Trace; post office closed in 1960. EDWARDS, Logan Co. Was located 7 miles NNW of Russellville, had been established about 1872 on land owned by George B EDWARDS, Russellville banker. The post office and community is now extinct; the post office opened in Oct 1885, Marion L PITT, postmaster. This town was also known as Edwards Station. EGYPT: Elliott Co. See Stark. EGYPT, Jackson Co. 10 miles SE of McKee. Post office established Nov 1876, Adam RADER post master. Many have been named by the AMXY family who came to this area after the Civil War who supposedly said they had come a "fur piece: from Hawkins Co TN and exiled into Egypt (from the Bible). EGYPT, Shelby Co. See Chestnut Grove. EIGHTY-EIGHT, Barren Co. 7 ½ miles SE of Glasgow. Post office established Sept 1869 by Dabney L NUNNALLY, the local storekeeper. According to tradition he didn't write very well and when it was time to name the post office, he said "call it 88 - I can write that…" Others say it is because the town and post office was then 8.8 miles from Glasgow. E. K. JUNCTION, Carter. See Hitchins. EKRON, Meade Co. 3 ½ miles S of Brandenberg. The town was founded on Dr. ROBERTS land which he donated; and the name was that of a Biblical city. Loneoak was chosen originally named for a lone oak by a large pond which offered shade to resting slaves. Post office opened her Jan 18899, Charles E. ANDERSON, first post master. ELAMTOWN, Morgan Co. ¾ miles above the mouth of Pelfrey Branch of Williams Creek and 5t miles E of West Liberty. Post office opened Aug 1883 and likely named for the first post master, James E ELAM or his family. ELDORADO, Mercer Co. See McAfee ELIHU, Pulaski Co. 1 ¼ miles S of Somerset. The Cincinnati Southern (now Southern) RR was completed in this vicinity and storekeeper Elihu TAYLOR petitioned for a post office. Several names were submitted and rejected, so he chose his first name. The town name is pronounced ehl/ah/hyu (long U). ELIZABETH, Christian Co. See Hopkinsville.
