Junction of US 60 and KY 180, ¾ mile N of I-64, 4 ½ miles SSE of Ashland. Name exists back to 1840 - presumably when in 1836, Jeremiah M CANNON bought land here. Post Office opened in 1839, John COLCIN post master; name changed from Cannon to Cannonsburg in 1850. PO closed 1932. CANOE: Breathitt Co. On KY 1877, 7 ½ miles SSW of Jackson. Early settled in 1799 with a party including Abraham BOYD, from NC. Town first named BOYD'S LANDING when PO opened in 1820, George A. Gordon pm. But changed to Canton. CANYON FALLS: Lee Co. Post office extinct, was the location of a church and mission school on KY 708 and Bear Creek, 6 ½ miles E of Beattyville. First known as CARTERS CHAPEL. In 1909, Andrew J. Bowman became post master, named town for local canyon and falls. Falls no longer exist. CARBON GLOW. Letcher Co. No current post office, 7 miles NW of Whitesburg. Was an early coal camp, named for the coal company. PO opened in 1908 with William CAUDILL (named for David CAUDILL); moved up the road and opened in 1926, named possibly for carbon. CARCASSONE: Letcher Co. 9 miles WNW of Whitesburg. PO opened as GANDER ELK CREEK in 1907; Harrison BANKS, pm. Maybe named for the wild geese found there. Renamed Carcassonne likely by a teacher when it reminded him of a valley in France. CARLISLE: Nicholas Co. 87 mile E of Louisville; founded 1816 on John KINCART's land. CARNTOWN: Pendleton Co. No post office, 11 ½ miles NNE of Falmouth. Might have also been known as BARKER'S LANDING and also STEPSTONE. When Post office opened in 1938, it was called MONTIER with Francis CHALFANT, p.m. Closed in 1872, re-opened the next year with Hiram J. CARNES as pm. PO closed again in 1920. CARPENTER: Whitley Co. 10 ½ miles E of Williamsburg on KY 92. PO opened 1882,named for its first post master, E A CARPENTER's family. CARPENTERS MILL PO: Allen Co. See ALLEN SPRINGS. CARR CREEK: Knott Co. Post office recently closed, 6miles S of Hindman. PO established in 1905, renamed to Carr Creek to honor the school that had been there. Many other possibilities. Benjamin CRAIG laid out the town in 1792 with James HAWKINS. PO opened in 1807 with Robert PLUMMER, pm. CARROLLTON PO: Fayette CO. Dee DONERAIL. CARRS: Lewis Co. 6miles NW of Vanceburg. No post office, may have been called STOUTS LANDING for a pioneer family. Post office established originally as STATION LANDING in 1867, Ritcherson M SOUT pm. Renamed a year later for Frederick M CARR, then postmaster. Closed in 1953. CARRSVILLE: Livingston Co. 17miles north of Smithland. Likely settled by the LUSK family before 1803. In 1840 Billy KARR was there, named for him. PO opened 1854, Leander BERRY, p.m. CARSONS LANDING: Butler Co. See LOGANSPORT. CARTER CITY: Carter Co. Jct of KY 2 and 474, 11 miles NW of Grayson. The Kinniconick & Freestone RR ran in this area. In 1895, the GOBLE post office, which had been established 1886 was moved here. Town was called CARTER - still known as both Carter and Carter City. CASKY: Christian Co. 2 miles SE of Hopkinsville. Likely named for James CASKEY who donated the land for a depot there. Town began as CASKY STATION but changed to current name in 1880.
