    1. TIP #225 - KENTUCKIANS HEAD WEST
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. My thanks to the Illinois State Genealogical Society Quarterly, Volume 29, Number 3, fall 1997, for many sources for this tip, edited by Julia Shwab Roberts Vodica). "Why, sonnie, I've heard it said that a man can find enough gold in one day out in Calforni-a to make him a millionaire!" "They're finding gold so fast out there that you won't have to work a lick the rest of your life!" "Thar's gold in them thar hills!" How the hearts of our early settlers must have jumped in excitement as they heard the reports coming back from the state of California - and other states! Here they were slaving away day and night trying to eke out a living in Kentucky when they could just go out west, scoop up thousands of dollars worth of gold, come back to Kentucky and live the life of leisure! How the old men must have dreamed of the days when they were young enough to embark on such a wondrous adventure! How the wives and mothers must have shuddered at the thought of husbands and sons traveling by foot, horseback and wagon across the mountains and plains to such an unknown fate. How the young men must have cajoled, planned, discussed and perhaps shivered down their own spines at the thrill of the quest! Why, there hadn't been such excitement ringing through the land since the BIG war - the Revolutionary War! It was a dangerous trek - Indians, disease, starvation, weather ... so many unknowns. But, where there is a will, there is a way they say, and groups sprang up in communities and across county lines and groups were formed to travel together for safety. Many nights were spent huddled by candle light with the men planning each mile; looking at the hand-drawn maps on the back of a piece of paper by someone who said he knew the route to take. Hours were spent getting supplies together and finding a guide. Preferably they would want someone who was known for his leadership abilities; his knowledge of what they faced. But, most likely they were to be led by someone in their own area who knew no more, no less than they did. Did women and children go too? Yes - but at far smaller numbers. When the genealogist hears that their forefather went on the GOLD RUSH, they must stop and figure out first, which one? The thought that crosses our minds immediately is the California Gold Rush which began in 1848 and continued into the 1850's. BUT ... there were other "rushes" - gold and silver, and to states other than California. There were copper and coal rushes too. Let's start with California however. Gold was first discovered at Sutter's Fort near Sacramento in January of 1848. By 1849 the town was booming and those going here to seek their fortune were known as the "49'rs." It is noted that between 1848 and 1850, approximately 40,000 came here. Maybe there weren't quite that many, but there were enough people in California by 1850 for them to gain statehood. Rushes also reached into Washington State. Here men were in search of timber, food and other products, centered primarily around the Puget Sound area. In 1852 gold was discovered at Ft. Colvile, and in 1860, in the Walla Walla area. Seattle became the launching site for gold rushers heading off to the Klondike in the 1890's. Montana had its first gold rush in 1852 but the largest started in the 1860's near Banack (1862) and Virginia City (1864). In the 1880's silver, copper and other minerals drew large groups of prospectors, enough to gain Montana statehood in 1889. Colorado - remember the slogan "Pike's Peak or Bust"? This was the result of the god rush there which attracted in excess of 50,000 people. Gold had been discovered at Cherry Creek (Denver) in 1858. Statehood for Colorado resulted in 1876 with the silver strikes at Leadville and the 1890's silver strike at Creede attracting more people; then a large gold strike at Cripple Creek. Nevada. Gold was discovered here in 1859 and the richest silver deposit known as the Comstock Lode had already made the area well-known in the 1850's. Even the California prospector was lured to Nevada when the news came out. One of our own family members picked up his entire family and moved to Nevada in the early days with he later becoming a mine supervisor and killed in the process in a mining accident. In the 1870's into the early 1900's, more silver strikes were made, and a boom of gold in 1902 at Goldfield lasted until 1918. Nevada became a state in 1864. Idaho had its own gold strikes in the early 1860's. Prospectors came here from Washington, Oregon and California and the Idaho Territory was formed in 1863. Another boom caused by gold occurred at Coeur d'Alene and this was followed by more silver and lead booms. It reached statehood in 1890. Wyoming was the site of a gold discovery in 1867 at South Pass and rich coal deposits were found later. It became a state in 1890. South Dakota was the site of a large amount of gold in 1874 in the Black Hills. This boom continued into the 1880's and in 1889 South Dakota reached statehood. Arizona. The famous silver boom first occured here in 1877 at Tombstone and prospectors raced here to be the first to stake a claim. Many have heard of Boothill Cemetery there! Tombstone, that shoot-out town of fame, now a booming tourist attraction and close to my former residence (a delightful place to visit!). Cooper is mined here also. Arizona reached statehood in 1912. Alaska and Canada. The major Canadian gold rush lasted from 1858-1862 when gold was discovered at British Columbia and other sites. The Alaskan gold strike occurred near Juneau in 1880. Another gold rush was in the Klondike Yukon Territory 1896-88 along the Alaska border. Nome set off another rush; later Fairbanks in 1902. Alaska was added to the United States as a state n 1959. Even Australia had gold rushes in 1851-1853 near Victoria and later in western Australia and Witwatersrand in South Africa in 1884 drew prospectors from all over the United States. I would wager a small bet that in the group there just might have been some Kentucky sons. The difficulty in tracing our wander-lust blessed Kentucky boys was their need to move from one location to another. Thankfully, many left diaries or were blessed with the desire to keep up a lengthy correspondence with their family back home. They might start in California but travel to Idaho, Nevada or any other location where the news said "Stake out your claim NOW!" How can you find written records outside of the diaries and letters? Some of these would include: . Census (federal, state and territorial) . Local newspapers who printed the letters of their "correspondents" out in the west. . County histories. . Estate, court, deeds, guardianship papers. . Ship passenger lists. Some had to go by the ocean to reach their destinations. See note following. . Steamboat records. . Railroad records. Note on ship passenger lists. Many southerners and midwesterners who returned home by ship disembarked at New Orleans. They would have traveled around the tip of South America or Panama, overland across Panama. Also, those using the railroad to reach the Klondike area by ship or rail to Seattle or another large coastal area and then by rail to the Klondike. There is a microfilm series entitled Passenger and Crew Lists of Vessels Arriving at Seattle 1890-1957 available. To reach Montana and Idaho was normally by the Missouri River steamboats which departed at St. Louis or by overland travel. Passengers and crews of riverboats, stagecoaches, wagon trains, etc. are not as easily available but some do exist. Check the National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections and the Periodical Source Index (PERSI). Another source is Louis J. Rasmussen's San Francisco Ship Passenger Lists (1850-1875). This is a 4-volume series. Peter E. Carr also published San Francisco Passenger Departure Lists, San Bernadino, VA; ca 191-1996. More possible sources of information would be found in obituaries, hotel guest ledgers, newspapers in the area where they were mining. Also there is what is known as the Mining Jurisdiction Records. The miners usually formed jurisdictions to handle legal matters before the area reached territorial or state status. They made rules, examined records, had clubs, set out mining districts, vigilante committees, etc. Claims had to be surveyed, recorded, deeded, witnessed, bought, sold, owned individually or corporately. Paper documentation! Maybe you can strike gold if you do your own mining for ancestors! (c) Copyright 16 February 1999, Sandra K. Gorin, All Rights Reserved, sgorin@glasgow-ky.com TIP OF THE WEEK! 1. TIP#224 - MIGRATORY PATTERNS
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. TIP #224: MIGRATORY PATTERNS According to the Kentucky Encyclopedia, "the movement of settlers into Kentucky began in the 1770s when it was still a part of Virginia. " This came about of course, due the issuance of land warrants to the veterans of the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. Movement continued for several years in the boundaries of what became the Commonwealth of Kentucky with most settlers coming overland through the Wilderness Road and by water down the Ohio River. With the 1850 census, Kentucky decided to track places of birth on its citizens. Most of the settlers came from neighboring states with Virginia giving up the largest amount of its people followed by Tennessee, Ohio, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. This changed so that by 1870, most of Kentucky's new arrivals came from Tennessee and 100 years later, from Ohio. There were also large numbers from Indiana, Illinois and West Virginia whereas North Carolina and Pennsylvania dropped sharply. Kentucky has never ranked high in foreign immigrants. In 1850, there were approximately 31,400 so shown, less than 4 percent of the state's population. The highest recorded tally was in 1870 with 63,400. This took a dramatic decrease over the next few years and in 1980 less than 1% of the citizens claimed foreign birth. The latter is to be found in a large degree in the towns with universities and colleges. Where did some of our Kentucky citizens go when they left Kentucky? There was a dramatic shift to the west in the 19th century and another shift to the north in mid 20th century. Missouri and Texas claimed the largest amount of Kentucky people in 1850 and this trend continued until about 1910. Gradually, according to the Kentucky Encylopedia (p. 636) this trend shifted again then to the north and northwest with Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan becoming the major destinations. Why did they move? Good and inexpensive land, industrial jobs lead the list. Some selected states who took our people! CALIFORNIA: "Thar's gold in them thar hills!" rang out and enticed many from Kentucky and other states. Mexico ceded California to the United States in 1848 and the gold fever struck almost immediately. It is said that the gold rush increased the population of California from 15,000 to 250,000. Many a Kentucky lad packed up his vittals and headed out in groups formed in many towns to strike it rich. Information on California can be found at the CAGENWEB site at: http://www.compuology.com/cagenweb/ ILLINOIS reached statehood in 1818, formerly known as the American Territory in 1797 and then the Illinois territory in 1809. Settlers began arriving here in numbers in 1825 with most of the coming from the eastern states and from foreign countries. Many Kentucky residents who headed off to the Illinois Territory were attracted by good land, and industries that sprung up around the Lake Michigan area. The St. Clair county area was the first county organized in IL with many Kentuckians' names showing up on records there. For a wonderful view of the settling of Illinois go to this URL: http://www.museum.state.il.us/exhibits/athome/index.html It is part of the ILGENWEB project and takes the reader on a visual and written tour of the beginnings of the state. INDIANA was known as the Indiana Territory until reaching statehood in 1816. Vincennes was one of the first developed area Knox, Harrison, Switzerland and Clark Counties were early settlement locations for many settlers, including those from Kentucky. Many Quakers left Tennessee on the slavery issue and headed to Wayne and Randolph counties along the Ohio border. For a good look at Indiana, check out the INGENWEB page at: http://www.usroots.com/~kyseeker/indiana/index.html KANSAS drew many Kentuckians to its lands. This was part of the Louisiana Purchase when it was annexed in 1803, then became a state in 1861. In 1861, Kansas had about 110,000 citizens drawn primarily from the southern states including Kentucky. An excellent history of Kansas can be found at the KSGENWEB site at: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/index.html OHIO became a state in 1803, again part of the Northwest Territory. The Virginia Military Bounty area was here with over a quarter of a million acres set aside for the soldiers and was heavily settled by Virginians and Kentuckians about the year 1800. The Chillicothe section in Ross County, OH attracted a great number of Kentuckians and Tennesseeans. After this, other districts were opened up for settlement and Scotch-Irish, Germans and Quakers came in from Pennsylvania and other states. MICHIGAN: Michigan became a state in 1805 after being a part of the Northwest Territory. Many were drawn early to this state because of public land sales, the Erie Canal, the territorial road through the Kalamazoo Valley in 1829. Lumbering and oil drew many speculators and citizens as it took many men to work these trades. Later, the industrial growth of Michigan drew many in automobile manufacturing. OKLAHOMA, although not among the highest in the list of snagging Kentuckians, did entice many of its citizens there. "Oklahoma's lands were opened in five land runs, land lottery, land auction and enlarged by a decision of the Supreme Court. See the OKGENWEB page at : http://www.brightok.net/~smcb0824/oklands.html for more information. TENNESSEE: Tennessee followed Kentucky into statehood four years later with many of its citizens coming from North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Only the eastern counties were originally settled and many wandered northward into Kentucky. For an excellent look at Tennessee's first people, check out the TNGENWEB page at: http://www.tngenweb.org/ TEXAS led an interesting early development by the time it became a state in 1845. It has had the flags of 6 governments fly - France, Spain, Mexico, The Republic of Texas, The Confederacy and the United States. It is stated that in 1820 there were less than "four digits" of white settlers in this vast land. Shortly after that, individuals from Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee became coming in under the leadership of Moses and Stephen Austin. For some wonderful Texas style history, check out the TXGENWEB pages at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txgenweb/ Today, every state in the Union can lay claim to have Kentuckian blood running through their veins. They can be found in every political office, in every pulpit, in outer space. Hearty stock they are! I will likely have other posts about churches or communities who packed up and moved together as I am able to locate the materials. (c) Copyright 11 February 1999, Sandra K. 1. TIP#223 - INSPECTIONS & WAREHOUSES - JAILS & JAILERS
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. TIP #223 - INSPECTIONS & WAREHOUSES - JAILS & JAILERS One of the most important things to the growth and development of Kentucky was its crops; especially tobacco, hemp and flour. It was found necessary to regulate the inspections of these commodities and the erecting of buildings called warehouses for the storage and inspection of same. In many of the old county order books you will find detailed descriptions of the warehouses with its rules and regulations. An act was passed by the Kentucky Legislature on the 25th of January 1809 entitles Inspections and Warehouses. In this law, the Kentucky county courts were allowed the power to establish within their county, inspections of tobacco, hemp and flour. A one-month notice had to be given of the inspection and it was decreed that the proposed inspection could not take place less than three miles of any previous inspection on the same side of the river or creek unless a 2/3rds majority of the justices concur to the erection to a warehouse within that distance. The warehouses for these inspections had to meet specific conditions. They had to be built of brick or stone, or scantling enclosed with strong boards or planks well nailed on; or logs so closely places as to keep the prevent any damage to the crop from the weather. It was to have a planked floor, have good shingles on the roof, all nailed well. The proprietor of each warehouse (or owner), or the owner of the land where the warehouse stood (including husband/wife/guardian/attorney/agent) had to agree to these conditions before the warehouse was built. If violations occurred, the warehouse could be shut down and inspections discontinued until it came within regulation. If repairs needed to be made, the county court or a justice of the court was to be appointed to inspect the structure. The inspectors appointed were not permitted the proprietor or any other person to make use of the warehouse at which they are inspectors. If a warehouse burned and it was determined that the proprietor or other person "made use thereof", the inspector had to repay the State Treasurer. If a fires was started within a warehouse, or if the warehouse didn't have doors, within 100 yards of the warehouse other than in the inspector's counting room, they had to pay 10 pounds. It was illegal for anyone to build any wooden chimney within 200 yards of the building. If such was found, the proprietor had to pulled it down or the sheriff would see that it was torn down. In a tobacco inspection where there was no warehouse, the county appointed two fit and proper persons to go out on a parcel of land, view it, lay it off by metes and bounds, as much land as they thought necessary. This was not to exceed 2 lots of ½ acre each. It was to be located at a convenient place for the citizens. Jails and Jailers: Where there are people, there will most likely develop a need for a jail. Thus, legislature was passed 19 December 1799 for the appointment and duties of jailers and different penalties. The county courts were ordered to appoint inspectors, collectors and deputies, surveyors of highways, constables and county jailers under the same law. They were to be sworn under oath and had to post bond with good security. The county had the power vested in them to remove jailers if they were thought to be negligent in their duty. Duties and exceptions: Any county jailer in a county where there was a Circuit Court was considered to be the jailer of the Circuit Court. He was to have custody of all prisoners committed to jail of the county by the authority of the court with the judges of the Circuit Court having the power to superintend and regulate the jail. During the time a man was jailer, he was exempted from military service, he could not serve on a jury and he had to attend the Circuit Court sessions as required. Jailers were authorized to take bond for the prison rules and special bails. If the jailer himself was committed to jail, the sheriff of the county took over the authority of the jailer. Jailers received any prisoner or prisoners who might be committed to his charge, including prisoners of the United States. If he failed to perform his duty he would be subject to the laws of the commonwealth. Jail: If a county did not have enough room to store the prisoners, guards were to be hired for the safe keeping of the prisoners, with the payment to the guards coming out of the county levy. The United States marshals had a right to use the jail at any time. All charges incurred were to be billed to the United States, and not to the county. Anyone who willfully broke, burned or otherwise injured or destroyed a jail or courthouse, or caused someone else to do same - which included aiding, abetting, advising or assisting - was liable to be sued in any court of law. Any money received from the guilty parties was to be put in the county treasury to lower the county levy and for the repair of the jail. (c) Copyright 9 February 1999, Sandra K. 1. TIP 219 - THE PIONEER'S FIRST GLIMPSE OF KENTUCKY
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. TIP #219 - THE PIONEER'S FIRST GLIMPSE OF KENTUCKY It has been said rightfully so, that genealogy is not just a list of births, deaths, marriages and burials. Genealogy is YOUR family; what they did, how they lived and what effected their lives. I have done previous tips on some of the history of early Kentucky, but as one gets deeper into one's family tree, the researcher wants to make his history "live." Names and dates are impressive for those who can trace their family tree back to nobility or felon ... but the family tree is never so exciting as when one explores the surroundings. Collins, in his History of Kentucky, written originally in 1847, took such a look. He realized that in generations to come, descendants of these hearty pioneers would want to know what made them they became. What did early Kentucky look like? One Capt. Imlay, an officer of the Revolutionary army, and an early witness of the settlement of Kentucky, published in 1793, New York, a description of the western territory of North America. This was his view of Kentucky, written to a correspondent in England. "Everything here assumes a dignity and splendor I have never seen in any other part of the world. You ascend a considerable distance from the shore of the Ohio, and when you would suppose you had arrived at the summit of a mountain, you find yourself upon an extensive level. Here an eternal verdure reigns, and the brilliant sun of latitude 39 degrees, piercing through the azure heavens, produces in this prolific soil an early maturity which is truly astonishing." "Flowers full and perfect, as if they had been cultivated by the hand of a florist, with all their captivating colors, and with all the variegated charms which color and nature can produce here, in the lap of elegance and beauty, decorate the smiling groves. Soft zephyrs gently breathe on sweets, and the inhaled air gives a voluptuous glow of health and vigor, that seems to ravish the intoxicated senses. The sweet songsters of the forest appear to feel the influence of the genial clime, and in more soft and modulated tones warble their tender notes in unison with love and nature. Every thing here gives delight; and, in that wild effulgence which beams around us, we feel a glow of gratitude for the elevation which our all bountiful Creator has bestowed upon us." (Collins, p. 153). Collins quotes John Filson's "Discovery, Settlement and present state of Kentucky," published as a supplement to the above which was written in 1784: "The country in some parts nearly level; in others not so much so; in others again hilly, but moderately - and in such places there is most water. The levels are not like a carpet, but interspersed with small risings and declivities, which form a beautiful prospect. The soil is of a loose, deep, black mould without sand, in the first rate lands about two or three feet deep, and exceedingly luxuriant in all its productions. The country in general may be considered as well timbered, producing large trees of many kinds, and to be exceeded by no country in variety. Those which are peculiar to Kentucky are the sugar tree, which grows in all parts, and furnishes every family with great plenty of excellent sugar. The honey-locust is curiously surrounded with large thorny spikes, bearing broad and long pods in the form of peas, has a sweet taste, and makes excellent beer. The coffee tree greatly resembles the black oak, grows large, and also bears a pod, in which is enclosed coffee. The pawpaw tree does not grow to a great size, is a soft wood, bears a fine fruit, much like a cucumber in shape and size, and tastes sweet. Of the fine cane, on which the cattle feed and grow fat, this plant in general grows from three to twelve feet high, of a hard substance, with joints at eight or ten inches distance along the stalk, from which proceed leaves resembling those of the willow. There are many canebrakes, so thick and tall, that it is difficult to pass through them. Where no cane grows, there is an abundance of wild rye, clover and buffalo grass, covering vast tracts of country, and affording excellent food for cattle. The fields are covered with an abundance of wild herbage not common to other countries. Here are seen the finest crown-imperial in the world, the cardinal flower, so much extolled for its scarlet color, and all the year, excepting the winter months, the plains and valleys are adorned with a variety of flowers of the most admirable beauty. Here is also found the tulip-bearing laurel tree, or magnolia, which is very fragrant and continues to blossom and seed for several months together." (Collins, p. 154). The principal rivers of Kentucky are the Ohio, Mississippi, Tennessee, Cumberland, Kentucky, Green, Licking, Big and Little Sandy, Salt and the Rolling Fork of Salt River. The Mississippi washes the Kentucky shore from the mouth of the Ohio to a point below New Madrid. Big and Little Sandy lie in the eastern extremity of the State. The Kentucky, Licking, Salt and Rolling Fork of Salt Rivers, flow through the interior of the state. The geological formations include at the lowest level the blue limestone, then the cliff limestone, slate or shale, and sandstone. Cavernous limestone is abundant, as is the conglomerate coal series. Minerals are abundant in Kentucky including iron, lead, salt, saltpeter, gypsum, hydraulic lime. Mineral springs are to be found throughout the state. At the Blue Springs on the bank of the Licking River is found a sulphur spring which contains a large amount of common salt and is highly prized. (Collins, 159-160). What an awe-inspiring sight must have awaited the first brave men and women who rode and walked into Kentucky! Dr. Walker, who visited the state in 1758 - many years before the Commonwealth of Kentucky was formed - was followed by Finley in 1767 and Daniel Boone in 1769. Later came Knox in 1770. Many came here because of the bounty lands which had been awarded to the brave soldiers of the Revolutionary War and the French war. These lands, in payment of services rendered, were to be "located on the western waters". Surveyors were sent to Kentucky to locate all these lands. Captain Thomas Bullitt led, in 1773, a party of surveyors down the Ohio to the Falls, and he as successful in platting many of the lands. James, George and Robert M'afee, brothers, had accompanied Bullitt from Virginia to the mouth of the Kentucky River. By 1774, other parties began to arrived followed by hunters who had heard of the wealth of game in this unspoiled country. James Harrod came and built his cabin where now Harrodsburg stands. Boonesborough was formed, built by the much loved Daniel Boone. In 1775, at the completion of the fort, the first known white women arrived. Mrs. Boone and her daughters arrived at Boonesborough in September of that year; Mrs. Denton, Mrs. M'Gary and Mrs. Hogan ssettled in Harrodsburg. By the spring of 1776, Colonel Richard Calloway brought his wife and two daughters to Boonsboroguh and in March, Colonel Benjamin Logan brought his wife and family to Logan's Fort, about one miles west of Stanford, in now Logan County. Slaves came with their owners and were immediately engaged in putting out crops. It was during the summer of this year, 1775, that George Rogers Clark came to the area for the first time; he an avid hunter and a great favorite of the pioneers. In 1775, Kentucky became a county and was allowed justices of the peace, a sheriff, constables, coroners and militia officers. At Harrodsburg in 1777, the court of quarter sessions met with Levi Todd serving as its sheriff and clerk, along with John Todd, John Floyd, Benjamin Logan, John Bowman and Richard Calloway. Almost immediately, a new danger raised its head; the Indians. Fighting with the Indians became a daily way of life for the pioneers and many noble men and women, along with children, lost their lives; many whose names are lost in the pages of time. George Rogers Clark mentioned above soon played an important role in the settling of Kentucky, of whose history has been written so glowingly in many of this historical accounts. With the Revolutionary War still raging, in 1776, Clark was taking surveys in Kentucky. He noted the northwestern posts which at the time were garrisons of the British troops which supplied most of the arms and ammunitions to the predatory Indian bands. His adventures would fill volumes and cannot be extended here in this post. Virginia neglected to provide for the general survey of Kentucky County at the expense of the government and it was done by the United States. Each possessor of a land warrant was allowed to locate the same where ever he pleased, he had to pay for his own survey. His entry of land was required to be quite specific so each other locator could recognize that this land had already been taken up. But, because there were so few qualified surveyors and record keeping was not the best, many sorrows, lawsuits and problems soon sprung up as the hunters and pioneers found their entries piled upon each other, overlapping boundaries, and general confusion. As the state became more settled, the problems intensified. And the immigrants did come - elk and buffalo hunters, Indian hunters, settlers - they came in a flurry. Everyone wanted the most rich section of land and no Indian was going to stand in the way. (c) Copyright 26 January 1999, Sandra K. Gorin, All rights reserved, sgorin@glasgow-ky.com TIP OF THE WEEK! 1. KENTUCKY FUNERAL HOMES - ADAIR THROUGH CARTER COUNTY
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Happy New Year! Sandi This tip is especially for those living outside of Kentucky who might have need to contact a funeral home in order to ascertain if any death/burial records exist for their ancestors. Most funeral homes came into existence in the 1890's. Many no longer have their records back that far however. I have found that the majority of funeral homes owners are most gracious in looking through their records. Many keep their burial records in large over-sized books; some on index cards. Information varies from home to home, but most will show the name of the deceased, date of death, age and location. Many records will show the date of birth, place of birth, occupation, parents' names, relatives (and sometimes their address), cause of death, physician and how long a resident of the state, when services held and burial date and location. If writing to a funeral home, please always include as much information as you have as to the name and date and include a self-addressed stamped envelope for their reply. This list is likely not complete but are the only ones I have been able to locate to date, pulled from 3 funeral sites and written records. Since there will be a word wrap on the e-mail members, you might want to cut and paste this to a word processor file. 1. TIP #210 - WORLD DISASTERS
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Merry Christmas friends! Sandi I want to step outside the boundaries of Kentucky for one short post. Close your eyes and imagine no cable or satellite television broadcasts; no radio, many times no newspapers, or maybe just small local papers delivered weekly. Think of how long it would take for earth-shattering news to reach the Kentucky family. As the 20th century made its appearance, communications improved tremendously of course, and the family had a better grasp on world events. Thus, in addition to worrying about their own problems, internal conflicts in the US, plagues and the like, the family was introduced more and more to what was happening in those far away countries they had only studied about in a geography book. It is said today, in our age of instant coverage, that the only headlines we hear or see contain bad news. It is the gripping spontaneous coverage of murders, hurricanes, uprisings, and other traumatic events that are primarily blasted out to us on a constant basis. Thus, this posting deals with disasters that made the news - from the days of the early 1800's up through the 1920's. How many of my readers, I wonder, remember some of the more current events that our Kentucky families were reading about? "Miasms" were believed to be substances which could not be seen in any form - emanations not apparent to the senses. Such miasms were understood to act by infection. Inflammation - Redness, swelling, pain, tenderness, heat and disturbed function of an area of the body. In the last century, cause of death often was listed as inflammation of a body organ such as brain or lung, but this was purely a descriptive term and is not helpful in identifying the actual underlying disease. Jail Fever - See Typhus Jaundice - Yellow discoloration of the skin, whites of the eyes and mucous membranes due to an increase of bile pigment in the blood. Synonym: Icterus. Teething - The entire process which results in the eruption of the teeth. 19th century medical reports stated that infants were mroe prone to disease at the time of teething. Symptoms were restlessness, fretfulness, convulsions, diarrhea and painful and swollen gums. The latter could be relieved by lancing over the protruding tooth. Often teething was reported as a cause of death in infants. Perhaps they became susceptible to infections, especially if lancing was performed without antisepsis. Another explanation of teething as a cause of death is that infants were often weaned at the time of teething; perhaps they then died from drinking contaminated milk, leading to an infection or from malnutrition if watered-down milk was given. 1. TIP #206 - MEMORIES CONCLUDED
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. LIVING - PLAIN AND SIMPLE · The bedroom doors opened that had been shut all day with no heat! and that blast of freezing air coming out! Cold featherbeds and a ton of quilts on top of you!!! Waking up to the smell of coffee and bacon. Standing close to the stove until your behind was red hot, then turned to warm the other side. The community water dipper that everyone drank from. The one wash pan that everyone washed their hands in before eating! Throwing a tablecloth over the leftovers and everyone picked around on the food all day with no refrigeration! Catalogs and spiders in the outhouse! The smell outside when it was snowing and silent...and the air hung heavy with the smell of burning coal in every house. · Even after my grandfather had water piped up to the house my grandmother refused to drink it because it tasted rusty! She drank water drawn from the well until the day she died in 1963! One wonders what health inspectors today would say about that old oaken bucket! No running water! Saturday night baths in the old wash tub sitting in the kitchen floor. · Cream separators, churns, wash boards, slop for hogs, gathering corn by hand, outhouses, dinner (that mid day meal) left on the table with a table cloth, going out on Sunday morning catching a chicken and wringing it neck to cook for Sunday dinner, stepping in chicken ** with the bare feet, or in the lot with the cows. · In the early seventies, my great-grandma still lived alone in the same house she'd been in for 60 years (she was 88 at the time). She cooked on a wood stove, because she didn't trust the electric ones not to explode. The wood man delivered the wood to her front yard, she would chop it herself and haul it to the back yard in a wheelbarrow. She also used a wringer washer, for the same reason she used the wood stove. The only electricity was used for lights, she also still used an ice-box (same reasoning). One year my parents bought her a pressure cooker for Christmas, to use in canning the multitude of fruits and vegetables she grew in her back yard. Nope, it might explode. · Lived in a 2 room house...took a bath in a # 3 tub...no running water...hauled water in a beer keg...with a little red wagon!!! Finally got a spigot in the side yard when I was in the 8th grade. I remember mama heating water in that #3 tub on top of the stove many a time for baths for us 3 kids. The 2 rooms in our house consisted of a kitchen and a room we all slept in. A wood stove. Mama also heated water on the stove to wash dishes by hand. · Using kerosene lamps for light at times. We did have electricity but it did go out from time to time. Daddy would drag out those lamps. After I got old enough to think about things...I wondered why Lincoln wasn't blind from reading by the things! · Running for the feather bed where mom had heated an iron, wrapped it and placed it in the bed to keep my feet warm. · Mom ran the switchboard when I was growing up and you could count on the party line to keep the neighbors informed when ever you made a phone call. Course they would be the first ones there when you needed help. Helped do a lot of canning and still do as much as I have time for. · We finally got an old wringer type washer the first thing I did was run my arm through the wringer, child like, it went pass the elbow. Scared everybody to death. MISCELLANEOUS: · I will never forget the odor of DDT. I think we didn't get sick because we didn't have time to - or knew we didn't have the $$ for a doctor visit so no sense being ill. · When the nickel was worth a nickel and *the silver penny was not worth a dime, only a penny. · When you could walk to school without being terrified of being kidnapped? Or having a drive-by shooting? · An airplane was a thing to truly be amazed with, the radio was something you would walk miles to see operate, the motorcar. The phonograph was all the rage, talking movies were just over the horizon, Television, what the heck is that?. Atomic energy? Never heard of a diesel engine, how about the telephone, party line, what no auto dial? · Dad went rabbit and squirrel hunting.. We were not amused with killing the bunnies and needless "I" wouldn't eat one if I was starving! It was all I could do to think of chickens grown and dressed at our place as any kind of food! I use to catch them and pet them. Daddy taught my 2 brothers how to trap....they'd go out before school and check traps and reset them...("we" were not happy with THAT either!) · The button box. My grandmother had an old tin filled with old and sometimes new buttons - we would spend hours going through it and listening to the stories behind each button - my mother has that box now and it will be passed on to me - unfortunately I don't remember all the stories, but still, I can't wait to own that box of buttons! · Halloween: When the air was chilly and the night air was spooky and the moon was large and orange, and there were all those outhouses just BEGGING to be dumped over. And the neighbors were one step ahead and sitting in them, just waiting for someone to dare try! · I had a plan to cut the toe of my stocking out and put a box at the bottom, so Santa would just keep filling and filling and filling. Somehow that never happened. · Cars in l930 were $200. I remember Dad bought a new car in l939 and paid $999.00 for it. It had a heater. I can remember passing people traveling and they were wrapped up in blankets. WAR: · The Saving Stamps you purchased with your lunch money and the air raid warnings. · Mother reading to us the war news after the mail ran each day. There was a map showing where the fighting was heavy that day. It showed where the Allied front was and the Axis front. I was so scared that when a plane went over, I thought it would bomb our house. Sugar rationing and shoe rationing. Gas rationing didn't bother us as we traveled in a wagon, pulled by 2 horses, to town, church and visiting. I remember when our neighbor showed up at school to pick up his daughters. Their brother was missing in action. He later was freed from a POW camp. I remember when the war was over. We children danced around the chinaberry tree in the yard. · World War II was Uncles going off to war and Mom worrying about if they were going to get home. · Most everything went in to the war effort--no money for gas, and if you did have money--no ration coupons. Same thing was true for film, food, and lots of other things. I remember when Pearl Harbor was bombed, the hushed tones in which the adults spoke, and then five of my uncles left for war. One of my most vivid memories is of my grandmother Clark sitting by the radio each day listening to the news concerning the war. My dad's only sister worked in what was then called the "bomber plant" here in Fort Worth, as did many women in this area. · Going out to weed the Victory Garden that our President asked everyone to plant so each family would be sure to have vegetables and not have to go without. I still have a book of rationing stamps. · Being home listening to the radio, probably listening to Amos and Andy on a Sunday morning when the terrible news came of the bombing that started the war. My dad went immediately down Monday morning to see if he was going in as he was planning on changing jobs. He was turned down for a heart murmur. But my uncle was drafted and he was in Guadal canal, a terrible battle, but survived. I started making a scrap book of the pictures of where the yanks were. Each day in the Boise Statesman was a picture of where the soldiers had advanced. I cut that picture out and pasted it in every day of the war. · When the Japanese children were taken out of the schools and put into camps. Two of my best friends were Japanese and we cried a lot. · City-wide blackouts. · The day the war was over. My aunt and my grandmother and I had gone downtown and we were again on a streetcar. All of a sudden, all the grownups began to hug each other for no reason, with no warning. Cars zigzagged down the street, honking their horns. Every church bell rang. People threw hats and newspapers into the air. They were laughing and crying and running into the streets. Strangers picked me up and lifted me above their heads, passing me from hand to hand down the length of the streetcar, cheering and whistling and crying. Every grownup in the world had gone completely nuts! I was terrified and astonished that such a thing could happen. Other memories by Sandi: I thought in conclusion that I would add a few of my own memories. They are random memories accumulated over 58 years and aren't world shaking - but they are me. Dad being drafted during World War II, failing for some health reason and my screaming out to my Mom that I saw the Sunbeam (seal beams)headlights of our car when he returned from the draft board. The top of our car being caught on fire when a town Fourth of July display's fireworks got too close. Those wonderful 4th of July parades, the fireworks - all of us children running around with our sparklers. The Saturday night movie in our little town of 300, a screen and projector being set up on the field of the grade school, everyone sitting on blankets with picnic lunches. Running boards. Growing up next to my grandparent's house with my grandmother's acre of beautiful flowers she showed each year at State Fair - the apples, pears, peaches, plums, grapes and berries (including what I thought my Mom had called poison berries!) The outside pump for all our watering needs. Our first sink with a little pump on the side. Taking the Saturday night bath in a big tub on the kitchen floor. Inside plumbing later being installed and my dropping my Lone Ranger ring in the commode and overflowing the entire first floor. My grandmother's canning. The threshing parties with tables set all over the side lawn with the women folk cooking for hours and eating last. Riding in the wagon hitched up to Doc and Molly. Eating raw soybeans (I still hunger for the smell of soybeans!) My cousin and I gathering eggs and reaching a snake instead. Our eating more strawberries that we got in the basket, bing cherry tomatoes. Going to the State Fair and screaming in fear at the top of the ferris wheel, having to be brought back down. The merry-go-round and not being allowed to get close to the "freak shows" as they were then called. Seeing my first television at my grandparents - Friday night boxing matches, Saturday morning cartoons, Mickey Mouse Club, The Pinky Lee Show, Howdy Doody, the Saturday night wresting matches, Milton Berle show, Red Skelton, The Show of Shows. Listening to the radio to the Green Hornet, The Shadow, Fibber Magee and Mollie Going to school in a little country school, riding the school bus - and sometimes missing it! The "sick room" at the school, having the same teacher several years at a time, usually the one I didn't like very much. Listening to President Truman announce the new law that a president could only serve two terms. The beautiful nighttime skies with more stars than I've seen the rest of my life. Hearing the principal announce that Russia had placed a satellite in orbit called "Sputnik" and being afraid to go outside at recess in case the Russians were flying over and taking pictures of us. The bomb shelters. Hop-skotch, playing jacks, jumping ropes an the jungle gyms. Failing miserable at girls's basketball and being unable to pitch well in softball. Going to basket ball games on the school bus. Deep snows, hot summers, no air conditioning. I'd better quit before reaching much deeper into the 50's - the "Happy Days" generation. Hope you have enjoyed this series! Merry Christmas. (c) Copyright 10 December 1998, Sandra K.
