There isn't a church, but it would seem by the name that at one time a church did exist. I don't know why there was no mention of this in the Clay City Times. I will research this and share with you my findings. Please contact me off list. Missie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: MissieWo Surnames: Wise Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kentucky.counties.powell/1950.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Judy, sorry it took me so long to reply to this. The local paper, Clay City Times, did not have anything about ANY shooting in the six month time period around Feb 1912. I further checked with a local expert on churches, and he was not aware of any church in Powell County, KY with the name of Mt. Chapel or Mountain Chapel-or a shooting that had occured at a church. I tried to look up Mr. Wise's death certificate and there were no Kentucky Death Certificates for that name/year. This doesn't mean that it didn't happen, just that the information that you have needs to be double-checked -there were errors then as there is now 8-) Where did you get your death certificate? Is it marked delayed? I'd be glad to help you with this puzzle, email me off the board. Missie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. You might also contact the Powell County Clerks office and see if there is a record of an indictment for this. Perhaps, it was an accident where the gun went off and it wasn't a murder. The Red River Historical Society in Clay City has archived Clay City Times newspapers and will probably have this article, too. Good Luck! Aug. 4, 1806 Clark Co. KY. Macajah Hall would be the brother of Thomas and Edward Hall, Revolutionary War soldiers associated with Boonesborough (their names inscribed on a marker there). Brother Wm. was killed during the Revolutionary War. Macajah was too young to fight in the war. Thomas and Malinda's granddaughter Luetta, through Simpson Hall and Dolly Boothe, is my grandmother who married John Huston O'Hair. 1. [KYPOWELL] HAMMAN/HAMMOND(S) FAMILY REUNION
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: lklanier Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kentucky.counties.powell/1945/mb.ashx Message Board Post: HAMMAN/HAMMOND(S) FAMILY REUNION JULY 25-27, 2008, LEXINGTON, KY The Phillip Hamman Family Association made up of descendants of Revolutionary War hero, Phillip Hamman, and his wife, Christina Cook, residents of Kentucky for over 40 years beginning in 1782, will be having its Bi-Annual Family Reunion in Lexington, Kentucky July 25-27, 2008. Hamman/Hammond(s) cousins will be descending upon Lexington from Alabama, Arizona, California, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and, hopefully, many from all parts of Kentucky, as well as some new cousins from other states. Headquarters for the reunion will be the Four Points Hotel by Sheraton, 1938 Stanton Way, Lexington, KY. Reservations must be made by June 30, 2008 to get the special Phillip Hamman Group Rate. Visitors may check in as early as July 23 and get the same special room rate. When you call for reservations be sure to tell them that you are part of the Hamman Reunion group and want the special group rate. Brian Ann Wells Arnett of Versailles, KY is coordinating the reunion and could use some help from any of the Hamman cousins in the Lexington, KY area. For more information, contact Doris Brown Rose, President of the Association, by Email: [email protected] You don't have to be registered at the hotel to participate in the reunion events, but reservations for the Saturday night banquet should be made by those not staying at the hotel. You can contact Doris Brown Rose at the above email address to make those banquet reservations. Friday, July 25, a group trip is planned to Mt. Sterling, then to Slate Creek near Jeffersonville, Montgomery County, to visit the site where Phillip Hamman and Christina Cook lived for almost 40 years, followed by a group meeting at 7:00p.m. Friday night for the sharing of newly revised family group sheets for each of Phillip and Christina's children. Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. will be the business meeting for the election of new officers, followed by the sharing of new family history discoveries from members and guests. A highlight of the reunion is always the banquet on Saturday night. The special guest speaker at the Saturday night banquet will be Charles E. Darnell, descendant of Henry Cook, brother of Christina Cook Hamman. The reunion is also open to all Hamman, Hammond(s), or any other variation of the spelling of that surname, even if you are not a descendant of Phillip and Christina. Anyone who is a descendant of Phillip Hamman who is interested in becoming a member of DAR or SAR might especially want to attend this reunion. One member of the Association, Beverly Jay Martin, is a DAR Genealogy Consultant, has generously offered to help anyone who needs help with the application process. The service for Phillip Hamman has already been proven, as have the lines of each of his children, so it is a minor thing to get the papers in order for applying for membership in either organization. At the present time there are 88 descendants of Phillip Hamman in the DAR Descendants Database. Also, children from birth to age 21 can become members of CAR, Children of the American Revolution. The Phillip Hamman Chapter of CAR, located in Jackson, Breathitt County, KY, was named for our ancestor. James Bach Strohmeier, a former president of the Phillip Hamman Family Association, is now serving as its Senior Advisor/Sponsor. He would love to have some additions to h! is chapter. This is only the fourth time in the 37 year history of the Phillip Hamman Family Association that the reunion has been held in Kentucky. The previous Kentucky based reunions were in Louisville in 1974, and in Lexington in 1982 and 1994. So, all of you Kentucky Hamman/Hammond(s) cousins might want to mark this date on your calendar and plan to attend this year's reunion as it will probably be at least ten years before the next one will be back in Kentucky. Other reunions have been held in Chattanooga, TN; Little Rock, AR; Salt Lake City, UT; Seattle, Washington; Corinth, MS; two meetings in Oklahoma City, OK; two in Dallas, TX; two in San Francisco, CA; and four meetings in Alabama in the towns of Fort Payne, Guntersville, and twice in Huntsville. The Phillip Hamman Family Association was formed in 1971 with the dedicated purpose of (1) gathering data about the family of Phillip and Christina Hamman and their descendants, (2) creating a giant database of information on the family to be shared by all, (3) locating the graves of all of the children of Phillip and Christina and placing markers on those that were unmarked or "poorly marked", (4) to hold a reunion every two years, and (5) to publish a semi-annual newsletter as a means of keeping in touch with members on a regular basis. Because of the dedicated work of many Hamman cousins, all the purposes of the Association have been met, especially in the area of locating the descendants of Phillip and Christina. At the present time there are over 17,000 proven descendants who have been identified. In recent years, the family researchers have also greatly increased their efforts to obtain information on the descendants of Valentine Cook and Anna "Susannah" Baughman, parents of Christina Cook, and the associations's database on this family has been growing also.
