Hi All, I am hoping that someone can help me with the puzzle of America WALTERS. Here is some background information: Zachariah and Margaret Owens WALTERS are in Pike county by the 1830 census. At that time and until some of their sons begin households, they are the only WALTERS family in Pike county according to census information. America WALTERS was born March 3, 1852. She appears in the census in Zachariah's household in both 1860 and 1870. In the 1870 census, she is called Mexico. There is a marriage in Pike in October 1872 between an America Walters and William H. THORNSBURY. There is another marriage in 1878 between William THORNSBURY and Matilda FRANCIS. Question 1: Did America divorce or annul the marriage to William. Where did she go? She is not back in the household of her father in 1880. Question 2: Where is William H. THORNSBURY and his household. He is not listed in the 1880 Pike census. In 1882, Mexie has a daughter named Mary. On Mary's death certificate, her father's name is listed as Burnard GARRETT. There is not a marriage listed for America "Mexie" Walters until 1904 when she marries Jessie JONES. In the courthouse, it is listed as a second marriage for both parties. Question 3: Who is Burnard (Bernard?) GARRETT? Question 4: Where is America "Mexie" living between 1870 and 1904? and with whom is she living? In 1904, America marries Jessie JONES, but she will not live with him according to oral family history. Sometime after June 1900 and before May 1901, Mary WALTERS marries Albert THORNBURY, son of John Harrison "Harry" THORNSBURY. Albert is listed in the household of his father in the June 1900 census, but he has his first child with Mary by May 1901. Question 5: Where did Albert and Mary get married? There was not a marriage record listed in either Pike County or Buchanan County. They reportedly lived in the Mouthcard area of Pike County, but I cannot confirm this. Albert dies about 1907/1908, but is not listed in Pike county death records. Where were Albert and Mary Thornbury living? In the 1910 census, their four children are living with relatives. Mexie and her daughter Mary live together until Mexie's death in 1936. Mary is listed in one census as Mary HURLEY, but there is no spouse with her. Mexie is now called Mexie JONES. Before Marys death, she returns to the name Mary THORNBURY. Oral history says that these THORNBURYs have always lived in Pike county, but they do not seem to be recorded in death and marriage records when they should be. Does anyone have any information about this line of folks that includes WALTERS, THORNBURY, and GARRETT? Thanks for any help or leads -- Susan Martucci jkdevl@earthlink.net
