A valuable task for someone would be to compile an index of the set - at least for that part of Vol. 1 that goes up to 1895. Although no obits are in this set, there are a small number of references to deaths prior to 1895 and a great deal of other valuable data for the family historian. As example: (1) one can determine with some degree of accuracy when an Elder was first ordained and when they are last mentioned, thus giving an indication of death, or of leaving the church or area, and (2) one can compile at least a brief list of members of a particular home church [mostly Elders, Deacons, Clerks & "Messengers," and (3) one can also determine when a particular church was established, and what the parent church was [at least in some cases]. It is interesting, too, to see the interaction in those very early days between the various churches and individuals in the nearby counties and some of the "rules" of behavior deemed necessary for continued membership. How many of us nowdays would think of riding a horse to church from Beefhide Creek in Pike Co. to Flat Gap in present Johnson Co.? Well, I guess one wouldn't have to worry about "commuter traffic" slowdowns! (: This set of Minute abstracts was available for study at the Allara Library. BUT, as the set is NOT indexed, your valuable time can probably be better spent viewing old newspaper film [also not indexed but a lot of fun looking] or other items in their collection. Those who were raised in the area are probably very familiar with the practice, but "outsiders" may not know that the Old Reg. Baptist churches also have numerous photos of deceased members hanging on the walls. In at least one church I'm familiar with, there is a photo of one old member/Elder born as early as 1823/24 - but most are of more recent date. Jim W.
