There are some interesting new developments on the Hatfield lines that were in southwestern VA & a Hatfield DNA project has been initiated. They are looking for a direct male descendant of old "Eph of All" Ephraim Hatfield who would like to participate. This information has been recently posted on the Hatfield list at rootsweb. Brenda Here is the post: "Thanks to Robert Slavey for changing the way that this list works. Feel free to post your thoughts to the list any time, for replies will now automatically be posted to the list at large. We can chat at last! My news is a double-dipper. _________________________________ NEWS #1 We have a viable DNA project that is already making matches and proving (or disproving) theories we've spouted for years of Hatfield genealogy. Hasn't every Hatfield family wondered if they were really connected to the Feuding Hatfields and McCoys? Now is your chance to find out. At this moment, the Hatfield project is very small, with only 4 samples that have already been tested and posted to the table of results. Three of these samples ARE part of the same family, while the 4th has an entirely different genetic backgroud. The matching samples go backward to the a group of men found in Southwestern Virginia near the Revolutionary War, and we can now use DNA to prove that they are, indeed, part of the same family. The Feuding Hatfields should match this DNA pattern ... as soon as we can talk a provable descendant of Ephraim Hatfield into taking the DNA plunge. 1. George Hatfield of Southwestern Virginia (through his son Jeremiah and Jeremiah's son Reuben). 2. John Hatfield who md. Polly Craig and lived in Scott Co., TN. 3. Valentine Hatfield - long believed to be another son to old George Hatfield The non-matching sample belongs to another researcher, so she now knows that she doesn't seem to be related to the Feudists. I'll let her chat up her own lineage to the list. Here's a link to the current results: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/h/hatfield/index.html Click "Results" to see the DNA scores and see how they're grouped, then click "Patriarchs" to see the genealogy behind each DNA participant. I'll be glad to answer questions about the DNA and the lineage, discuss the test itself, talk about how to find critical participants, talk about how to raise money for the tests, etc. This afternoon I finally broke down and volunteered to be the administrator for the Hatfield DNA project, at least until someone else on this list wants to take this over. _________________________________ NEWS #2 This is DNA, too, but applied straight to genealogy. There's another DNA sample at the lab being processed right now. The results are due back in mid-September and will be sample H-5. The lineage for H-5 is already posted on the Patriarchs page. This sample goes back to Capt. Andrew Hatfield and wife Christiana Powell, also of Southwestern Virginia. There's never been a provable connection between Capt. Andrew and old George Hatfield whose DNA is already posted to the chart. Except there is that tantalizing idea that they were in the same place at the same time. Today we have no way to know whether or not they ever met one another, but in mid-September the DNA will tell us once and forever if they are even remotely related. This is particularly interesting in light of some research done on a Jurian Hartsfelder of early Philadelphia. Dr. Oliver Weaver, the guru of Hartsfelder/Hartsfield researchers, has worked with a Dr. Galen R. Hatfield who descends from Capt. Andrew. These two men now agree that Capt. Andrew Hatfield of Virginia is a descendant of Jurian Hartsfelder. I don't know the details of their research, but I can give you a link to an online paper where this is discussed. (And if anyone knows how to get in touch with Dr. Galen R. Hatfield, I'd love to have some contact info on him.) http://www.the-sims-family.net/genealogy/sims/ Click on the left side of this page at "Documents," then scroll down the page to find a document named "The Hartsfield Family of Marcus Hook, Ye Deleware River, 1676." This is a long document, but the parts that will interest Hatfields are the Foreward and the section on sons to Jurian Hartsfelder that begins on p. 23. Don't miss p. 28 that names John Hatfield who married Catherine Supplee as part of the Hartsfelder family. Capt. Andrew Hatfield of Virginia is a son to John Hatfield/Catherine Supplee. ________________________________________ Now we can finally prove who is related to whom. Who is related to the NJ and NY Hatfields? Who descends from the Southampton Co. Hatfields? Who's English, who's German? Who was Mansfield Hatfield? All things we've always wanted to know. Leslie"
