Greg, Emma P. Honaker was born 1871 and not 1862, as she is listed as a 9 year old in the 1880 census and was the daughter of James and Malinda Clark Honaker. It was Sarah Hess' daughter Emmaline Hess who was born in 1862. Two totally different Emma's. James Honaker and Sarah Hess were in two separate households in 1860, 1870 and in 1880. James Honaker may have been Emma Hess' father, but apparently he never married Sarah Hess since he was already married to Malinda Clark in about 1860. James Honaker died in 1889 and his widow Malinda was living with her son Robert in the 1900 Pike Co KY Census. Sarah Hess' daughter Emmaline would have been the one who married James Mitchell Maynard and James Adkins. In 1900 in James Maynard's house, Emma Hess-Maynard was listed as born June 1862, 39 years old. In 1910 in James Adkins house, Emma was listed as 48 years old (b. 1862), can't find Emma in 1920, but in 1930, she's listed as 67 years old (b. abt 1863). Apparently Pike Co KY did not keep birth records between 1879 and 1894, so the only place I can think of that you may find info on Thomas would be if you could get someone to do a lookup for you in "The Pike County Times" which was the newspaper which ran in the years before The Appalachian News-Express. They have the old newspaper on microfilm at the Pikeville Public Library. The other kids, you may be able to find birth dates from the Pike County School Census in the county clerk's office, but you have to know which school district they attended...and districts changed fairly often. It's a labor-intensive process and can sometimes take hours to find them, but the birth dates listed are very accurate as it was info given to the school by the parent or the child. Check Russell Co VA records for Sarah Hess's parents. As far as I can tell, there is no record of Emma/Emily/Emeline having married James Honaker in Pike Co KY. If they did, their marriage is not listed in the Pike Co KY Marriage Bonds 1822 - 1865, nor in Pike Co KY Marriage Records 1866 - 1900.
