I didn't find a listing for John Porter in 1822-1865 or 1866-1900, but found two for Elijah. You might also try looking at Potter's and Prater's in the census. Sometimes like-sounding names may have been mixed up a bit by census enumerators. File No. 112 - License issued February 1, 1825 "by Spencer Adkins CPCC for marriage of Elijah Porter and Mary Scoot. Clerk stated that the father of the said Mary personally applied for the license and that Elijah Porter was over 21. There wasn't a marriage listed in the 1822-1865 book for James to Sarah Smith, but the 1866-1900 book has the marriage to Susannah Weddington: James P. Layne, age 48, He & Pts - Floyd; to Susanna Weddington, age 45, She & Pts - Pike. Married on November 3, 1881 at Wm. H. Weddington.
