Paul, The marriage books I have only cover from 1822 - 1900. After 1900, you would need to contact the county clerk's office for records. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Paul Sabol Sent: Wednesday, September 12, 2007 3:48 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [SPAM]Re: [KYPIKE] [SPAM]Re: Marriage License in Pike Co. If it exists there, the groom's name would have been Samuel Elias Williams and the bride would have been Virgie Ratliff (or perhaps some other surname; not sure if she was married before Sam). Would have been after 1923 and before 1956. Sam used to live in McAndrews, but later ended up in Red Jacket, Mingo County, WV. Hi Dee, I know what you mean about speaking Spanish, I have not heard maybe 20 words in 4 years up here, and ten of those came from me, We have a few Mexican folks living around on some of the Tobacco Farms, and the folks around here complain about that,I tell them try and live in Miami Fl,then you will never complain. I was in 4 car accidents in Miami from 1978 to 1998 and they were 3 rear end collisions where I was hit from behind, all were Spanish speaking folks who said No speaky English, and the last one I was hit in the drivers side by a Mexican kid who had 4 bald tires no insurance, all were their fault,The last accident left me disabled, I am on fore arm crutches, and have had 6 back surgeries and have to use a wheel chair or electric cart to go shopping for I can not walk very far even with the crutches,I have a infusion pump that is implanted in my stomach that leads to my spine, and pumps three heavy narcotics directly into my spine,So I am always in a fog,but it helps the pain some, with out it I would not want to live, the pain is un bearable. I flew into Miami 2 years ago when my Grandma was sick,I got off at Ft Lauderdale airport,I thought we got Hijacked to Cuba,Nobody spoke English, I hate that place with a passion. My Brother had a landscape company in Bal harbor and Advemtura and he just sold it and bought a Bed and Breakfast in Mt Dura Florida,It is a big tourist town. he could have retired on the money he got for the business,he sold it for almost 2 million dollars, and bought it in 2000 for 250 thousand dollars and in just that short amount of time grew to beyond what he ever thought. That is how fast Miami Ft Lauderdale is growing. Again,I hate that place. Well I hope you find some more on that family because I have yet connected my GGreat Grandma to them, I had to laugh when you said you started doing this for a scrap book,When anybody who starts Genealogy,it is like a disease or a drug you get hooked and can not stop. I have been doing this for about 8 years, I am writing a book at the moment for the family, My main lines are Tuttle, Carpenter, Cone, Robbins, Hagan, I have been working none stop this week on the book. I have to get up and lye down every thirty minutes or so, sometimes I find my self asleep face first in the key board. I can fall asleep talking to someone, The pump has Dilaudid,Fentynel and Clonidine,The first two are heavy narcotics ,the other helps them to work better and controls my blood pressure,I still have to take other blood pressure meds, well I guess I bent your ears enough this morning. Talk to you again soon. happy hunting. Yes, I grew up here, too (in Hialeah). I always liked Miami Springs and Miami Beach better. I have lived in Atlanta, NY, CA, OH and MI. I want to get the hay outa' here and go live in WV now! Someplace where they still speak English and don't run the place like a third world country! I am about 10 yrs older than you. I graduated from Miami Edison. My dad's family were German immigrants who settled in Cincinnati in the 1850s. So far, I have found that they were from Hayna, Rohrbach, Ruelzheim, and Herxeheimweyer in the Rheinland Pfalz. My mom's family were English mainly. The Whittakers came around 1660 to MA and then at the turn of the 1800s 4 brothers moved from Princeton MA to Charleston (W)Va. They have quite a history and a lot of stories. The Porters have been my one big brick wall and I would dearly love to figure them out. If you find anything else, please, let me know.....and I will do the same. Very glad to meet you, Dee P.S. I have three websites dedicated to my quest which are at the bottom of some of those e-mails I sent you, if you are interested. There are three of them because I kept running out of space. I started out 3 yrs ago wanting to do a scrap book for my two daughters and it has turned into 3 filing cabinets and 3 websites!!!! ----- Original Message ----- From: "gerald" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, August 14, 2007 8:29 AM Subject: Re: [KYPIKE] John Porter b. 1837 Pike County > Hi Dee, I was surprised to see your Mom lived in Miami Dade County, I was > born and raised in Miami, I lived in Cutler Ridge , Homestead, and South > Miami Heights, I was born in Homestead Fl, in 1957, My Grandparents on My > Mom's side lived in Hialeah Fl all their live until they got to old to take > care of them self's, My Grandma is still living in Homestead Fl with my > Mom. Hi Jerry, I am very happy to hear from you. The reason I am interested in this John Porter is that I am investigating him as a possible father to my maternal brick wall grandmother, Geneva (Neva) Porter, whose parents were supposedly John and Mary Porter. This is the first John Porter I have found who even remotely fits the bill. I have been systematically investigating every Porter Family in KY. So far, I have done the ones in Butler, Floyd, Johnson, Bourbon, Boone, Henderson, and Crittendon counties. How I arrived at this John Porter as a possible is my remembering that mom always told me that her mother's family was related to the McCoy Family of the famous Hatfield- McCoy Feud. So, with nothing better to do, I checked the genealogy of the McCoys, and found this John Porter related to them. He is also the first that I have found who was the right age. The problem with him is that he is not going to be that easy to find info on. Nowhere that I have looked so far does anyone have anything further on the children of Elijah Porter and Mary Scott. I figure he must have moved when he married. He appears with his parents at the age of 13 in the 1850 Pike County Census. In 1860 the parents are still there with the two youngest children but he is not. My grandmother, Neva Porter, was b. 04 Jul 1872 or 1873 somewhere in KY. None of her documentation lists the town. This is why I have had a problem locating her family. I would dearly love to find out about her and her family. I never even knew her as she died a full 20 years before I was born. None of her children are left alive to ask any questions of. I have found all of the first cousins, none of which know even as much as I do. Neva Porter married Benjamin Whittaker 12 May 1890 at Charleston WV. Their children were: Benjamin b. 1897 at Pt. Pleasant, WV died in infancy. Eva b. 01 Feb 1900 at Charleston, WV died 1980 at Cincinnati, OH m. Thomas Jack Baron. Adam b. 1902 at Charleton, WV died two mos. later at Columbus, OH. Twins: John b. 17 Aug 1904 at Benwood, Marshall County, WV died 1971 at Cincinnati, OH m. (1st) Idabelle (?) b. KY m. (2nd) Daisy (?). Lawrence b. 17 Aug 1904 at Benwood, Marshall County, WV died 1981 at Cincinnati, OH m. (1st) Elizabeth Bielata (2nd) (?) and (3rd) Florene Freshour b. KY. Ethel b. 1909 at Green River (?) KY died 2005 at Orlando, Orange County, FL m. (1st) Paul Ervin of Wheeling WV m. (2nd) Charles Bastian of Cincinnati, OH. Twins: May Ada (my mom) b. 28 Apr 1912 at Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV died 03 Jun 1978 at Hialeah, Dade Co., FL m. (1st) Hubert Grabo m. (2nd) Edward Christopher. Mary Ida b. 28 Apr 1912 at Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV died about 1952 at Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH m. (?) I would also be interested in any of these names of her children being used in any Porter Family as only the name Benjamin had been used in the Whittaker family. Being that Pike County is so close to the WV line, it seems to make sense that she may have come from this area. It would fit in with the idea how she might have met my grandfather, Benjamin Whittaker, too. He did always work on the river, though, hence my checking all the other places and Porter families. When they married in 1890, the marriage record states that Neva was resident in Charleston WV at that time and that her mother was present at the marriage. I have recently found that Elijah Porter had 185 acres on Brushy Creek. So, I intend to try to locate a will for him in hopes he might name his still living children and/or grand- children. He or his wife do not appear in the 1870 Pike County Census. I have check- ed for a marriage of John Porter in Pike but have not found one, so feel he probably married elsewhere. Thanks again for answering me; and, I look forward to hearing from you again.
