I am looking for information on Mary E. Sturgill/Sturgell who married Anderson "Ance" Ellis in Pike County on Dec. 11, 1890. Who were her parents? I have been unable to locate her prior to the marriage in the census records and I would like to find out if she was related to my Blackburn Sturgell. Besides Mary, Anderson Ellis married two other women; Cynthia Tackett before he married Mary (1887 in Logan County, WV) and again after Mary, Dora Brown (1896 also in Logan County). Does anyone know if his marriage to Mary ended at her death or was there a divorce? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Anita McClung Fayette County, WV

Paul, The Pikeville Library and Pikeville College Library have the 'Pike County News' on microfilm back to 1922, if you know her date of death, it makes your search a little easier. Not all obits were printed back then, especially from the Pond Creek area, that is where my mom and dad both came from also. Thanks for trying, Jonah. I am just going to start plugging away at the death records, county by county to see if I can find a male Porter deceased betweem 1871-1880 and if I find one, I will check him out to see if he could be the one. She was born either 04 Jul 1872 or 04 Jul 1873. Her mother's name was Mary, b. abt. 1844, maiden name unknown. Father's name is listed on Nevora's death records as "John (?) Porter", the question mark being nearer to the first name....mother's maiden name not listed. In the 1910 & 1920 census she answered KY KY KY for the birthplaces of she and both her parents. The marriage record of my grandparents (1890) lists her birthplace as KY and states that her mother was present, although, unnamed. After Nevora's mother left Charleston WV (where they were living in 1880 with the mother listed as a widow) or re-married or died, Nevora stayed with a family named "Bonham" in Charleston who also claimed to be from KY in the census records (she is found living in their house in the City Directories listed as a nurse at age 17). There also appears to have been some association with a black family named Saunders, as there were several of these named males living in the house with Nevora and her mother in 1880; but, they claimed to be from VA. They were listed as boarders; but, what makes me think there truly was some connection, even though Nevora and her mother were white, is that years later Nevora also stayed in the same house with one Richard Saunders, who was one of these males. All this was either before she married my grandfather, Benjamin Whittaker, in 1890, or during what may have been a separation between them between 1890 and 1897, when their first child was born. I have searched the McCoys (genealogy) of Pike County and found that there definitely was a Porter connection there. A female Scott (can't remember the first name right now) who was an early McCoy descendant, married a John Porter; but, due to the problems with the birth records, cannot find out if my Nevora is connected to these people in a normal way. I have tried everything I could possibly think of and let it rest for about a year; but, am now ready to start digging again. Thanks so much for your kind answer. I am now thinking of just starting with the suspected KY counties and checking the deaths for any male Porter who died between 1872 and 1880 who may have been married to a "Mary". I could just buy a microfilm, one at a time, and go to it. At least I'd be doing something. Last year, I checked all of WV for Mr. Porter's death (also for Mary's death or re-marriage) and came up empty. I even checked the court records; but, these people were very quiet and unassuming and do not appear in the court records at all. All cemeteries have also been checked in WV. I even paid someone to go to the KY State Archives and go through the births; but, I can see now why that was fruitless. Thank you so much. I looked at the lists and it looks like, just maybe, I could use the death records of each county to systematically search. Most of the counties did not keep birth records during the time Nevora Porter was born; but her father died between her birth and 1880, when she & her mother appeared in the census with the mother listed as a widow (by this time they were living in Charleston WV). Neither mother nor father died in WV; and Nevora always claimed to have been born in KY (never mentioning exactly where). There also was a claim that the Porters were related to the McCoys, hence the reason I suspect Pike County KY. Since this was before 1911, the older records are on microfilm; but, I do have access to microfilm viewers with copiers attached at our main library here in Miami. Again, thank you so much. Gives me something to go on when I was at my rope's end. I, too, have a little collection of KY records; but, nothing whatsoever on births. This is the most interesting thing to me because I am looking for the place in KY where my Grandmother was born on 04 Jul 1872 or 1873. I am thinking it might be the Pike County area. I live in NC. I know some counties &states have these records available online for free (West Virginia has a real good web site) but have been unable to find that for Pike County Ky. There are subscription services online but I am not even sure the Birth Certificate I am looking for is on file. Can anyone give me some direction as to the best way to go to find what I need? The name I am searching is Cammie Laura Reynolds June 25, 1912. Father was Charles P. Reynolds and Mother was Cammie Davis Reynolds. I do know that in 1913 they were in Williamson West Virginia, Mingo County and they lived there for years and the rest of their children were born there but Cammie Laura Reynolds I was told was born in Kentucky. A friend of mine looked up the information for you and this is what he found: You can email him, privately, at [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) . In 1912 only a small portion of the births were registered. I checked my CD on Kentucky births and she wasn't in there. I checked by child's name and also by mother's name but no luck. I also checked in the delayed birth records for Kentucky but nothing there either. I checked all records for Cammie Reynolds or Laura Reynolds but still nothing. Birth certificates for Kentucky aren't available online....only the birth record which would have given the child's name, mother's name, date of birth, Volume #, certificate # and county of birth. Sorry.....Bill I did find a death certificate for Cammie Laura Reynolds in North Carolina in 1926 (born 1898). This would have been the mother of the girl he is looking for- since her father's name was Davis and her husband was Charles P. Reynolds.
I have the state birth records for Ky. for 1911 to 1999 and there is no Cammie Laura Reynolds listed, a lot of births back then got missed being put in the records.
