HELLO, I would like to know if any of the Charles researchers in Pike would know if some of there kin up and went to the above counties. TIA, Mollie Charles Pawlik
Hello Everyone, My family comes from Pompey Road, Millard (now Shelbiana) in Pike County. I've only visited the area 4 to 5 times, and only one of those as an adult (which means I viewed a very narrow area by walking and by not paying ANY attention to what was around.) Is there anyone on the list who is familiar with the area who can "walk" me through the area and tell me the names of the nearby creeks, churches, anything which might be of interest? Perhaps there is a VERY detailed local map or a book on the local history (or absolutely any other subject) that someone could refer me to. Any help is greatly appreciated. Yours Truly, Virginia Coleman Murphree Santa Rosa, Ca. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Ms. Dillon: It would be interesting to see here your abstract of Meredith Collins' Rev. War Military, Bounty Land and Pension record's file; assuming he drew a pension.. . . or, have you already done this? That he was listed as a "Free White" on the 1810 Floyd Co. Census and as "Free Colored" [most likely meaning "Indian" for this area] in the 1820 Floyd Co. Census is interesting. That almost all the COLLINS, and many of those they intermarried with, as later found in Johnson Co., were noted as "Indian" or "Mulatto" does indicate [from my limited research on the family] that these are all from the same lineage. Fellow Searchers: I haven't posted for a while and decided to share a letter that I had saved from a cousin, Eula Collins Conley, who was a great researcher. She left behind a lot of info on our Collins line that gave many of us a head start. Eula , and my mother, use to communicate by writting letters back and forth and I have saved a stack of them. Here is one. If anybody sees anything that rings a bell or might help me in locating who Meredith's parents were I would really appreciate it. Brenda Collins Dillon #1 Mrs. Russell W. Conley of 3660 S.E. Tolman St. Portland, OR 97202 2 Nov 1980 My great grandparents were Meredith and Polly (Holloway) Collins, and I am the granddaughter of William Collins and Mary (Molly) (Hatfield) Collins. Several of my Collins relatives learned through their parents that the name had not always been Collins; that Meredith had deserted during the Revolutionary War and changed his name to Collins. Meredith did not desert as he is shown in the records on the Circuit Court of Montgomery County, Virginia. He was under the command of Capt. James McDaniell. Pike County, Ky. has a monument with the names of sixteen Revolutionary War soldiers and Meredith's name is on it. The 1820 census of Floyd County, Kentucky shows Meredith Collins, his son Bradley and one Valentine Collins as "Free Persons of Color". I feel sure that Valentine was a brother to Meredith as they were in Wilkes Co. N.C. at the same time along with one Vardy Collins who probably was related. Meredith was in Russell Co. Virginia from 1799 through 1807. Valentine was in Hawkins Co. Tennessee as early as 1805 or before. his son Joshua was born in 1805 in Tennessee. Joshua died in Johnson County, Kentucky in 1854. His parents were shown as Valentine and Dicy Collins. Valentine was still living in Johnson County in 1843. He was not shown in the 1850 census. I have been trying to locate the grave of Meredith Collins who no doubt had a marker as his grave had been located prior to May 30 1929 when the monument bearing his name was erected. Also, I am still trying to find the date and place of his marriage. Meredith died in 1841 in Pike County, Kentucky. All of Meredith's descendants had been told that we were Irish and that either Meredith or his father came from Ireland. Supposedly they came to fight in the Revolutionary War, but this information was incorrect as Meredith was born in Virginia in 1760. I have been greatly disillusioned as to where my Collins ancestry came from, and now after reading the book "The Melungeons Yesterday and Today" I'm not sure where they came from and why. My grandfather William Collins was a Baptist preacher. His brothers were Archibald,John, Bradley, James, and I believe he had two sisters not yet identified. #2 this is a letter recieved by the co host of my website in which has info in that Eula was seeking from another researcher. Hi Bj !! I have found something we may want to look into !! I rec'd some copies of a few of the William Paul Grohse papers from a friend in Tucson, AZ. One of the pages is a letter to Mr. Grohse from a Mrs. R. W. Conley of Portland Oregon. The letter is dated 1973. Mrs. Conley says that Meridith Collins is her g grandfather. In the letter, she is asking Mr. Grohse about Meridith being in the Rev. War and not being able to locate any record..she says she wrote to the General Services Administration because Meridith was supposed to have applied for a pension and received land grant in Pike County Ky, but there was no record.... Mrs. Conley also states that a Benjamin Collins married Mary Jane Dye in Pike Co, Ky in 1791..and she deduces that "something is wrong with this"...Pike Co. was not created until 1821 !! I would like to find out more about this marriage.. my g grandma was Mary Frances Dye and I am at a dead end on that family also !! I also would like to find out more on this DYE line. Reguards, Brenda Collins Dillon http://members.xoom.com/Appalachian/index.htm

I have just added my email address to the Pike County Rootsweb mailing list. This is my first message with the intent of informing those of you that are researching families in Pike County, Kentucky. The primary family that I am researching is the Marrs Family. Samuel W. Marrs and his wife Sarah Owens, settled in Floyd County (later to become Pike County) around 1816. One of the secondary families would be the Rice Spurlock Damron family. Rice Spurlock was the son of Spurlock Damron and Sarah Trout. He married Lucy Ann Picklesimer, April 3, 1872, Lawrence County, Kentucky. Rice Spurlock was born in Pike County, January 21, 1851. After his marriage, he moved back to Pike County where several of his children lived and married. My mother was the daughter of Harvey George Casebolt and Nancy Emeline Johnson. Nancy Emeline Johnson was the daughter of Andrew Jackson Johnson, Sr. and Malinda McCowan. For this reason, I am also researching the Johnson and McCowan families. I have very little information on Andrew Jackson Johnson, Sr. He was born in Wythe County, Virginia but I do not know who his parents were. Malinda McCowan was the daughter of Hugh McCowan and Rebecca Carter. This is a far as I go on this side of my family. I also have the Maynard, Drawdy, Ford, Weddington, May, Patton, Phillips and Owens families that are a part of my ancestry. Of course these are all in addition to my Picklesimer line. I have done an extensive amount of research on this line and have most of the information on them already. My only efforts there are in locating the descendants of Abraham Adam Picklesimer and his wife, Elizabeth Prater. Additionally, I am researching the descendants of David Picklesimer (reported to have been a brother to Abraham Adam) and his wife, Sarah Prater. Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Prater and Sarah the daughter of Archibald Prater. This family moved to Floyd County (later Johnson County) around 1809. Looking forward to working with each of you on the Pike County, Kentucky research mailing list. John W. Picklesimer

Hello list members, This week end the Appalachian Mountain Families website is comming down for an update. We want to use some real pic scenes of some landmarks pertaining to our research. Meredith Collins lived and owned a farm in Shelby Creek. Does anybody have a picture of that area that you can send me. If not....how about the Tug River because William Collins had a Gristmill on the Tug, close to the Judge Toliver's place. Any help would be appreciated and credit will be given to the submitter.
