They do not have obits in this > two volume set. > Jonah Re: The "unindexed 2 vol. set of minutes for the New Salem Assn. going back to 1825." A valuable task for someone would be to compile an index of the set - at least for that part of Vol. 1 that goes up to 1895. Although no obits are in this set, there are a small number of references to deaths prior to 1895 and a great deal of other valuable data for the family historian. As example: (1) one can determine with some degree of accuracy when an Elder was first ordained and when they are last mentioned, thus giving an indication of death, or of leaving the church or area, and (2) one can compile at least a brief list of members of a particular home church [mostly Elders, Deacons, Clerks & "Messengers," and (3) one can also determine when a particular church was established, and what the parent church was [at least in some cases]. It is interesting, too, to see the interaction in those very early days between the various churches and individuals in the nearby counties and some of the "rules" of behavior deemed necessary for continued membership. How many of us nowdays would think of riding a horse to church from Beefhide Creek in Pike Co. to Flat Gap in present Johnson Co.? Well, I guess one wouldn't have to worry about "commuter traffic" slowdowns! (: This set of Minute abstracts was available for study at the Allara Library. BUT, as the set is NOT indexed, your valuable time can probably be better spent viewing old newspaper film [also not indexed but a lot of fun looking] or other items in their collection. Those who were raised in the area are probably very familiar with the practice, but "outsiders" may not know that the Old Reg. Baptist churches also have numerous photos of deceased members hanging on the walls. In at least one church I'm familiar with, there is a photo of one old member/Elder born as early as 1823/24 - but most are of more recent date. Jim W. 3. Re: Pike Co., KY Newspapers / Obits The old Pike Co. News from Feb 1924 to ? is available on microfilm at the Allara Library, Pikeville College, Pikeville, KY. There is a microfilm printer right with the reader so it is very convenient. There are very few obits at these early dates, but lots of other interesting articles of value. There was an earlier newspaper published for a short time at Virgie. I've seen copies but don't recall the name. Brief abstracts of obits/memorials from the New Salem Assn. of Old Reg. Baptists, 1895-1950 [which covers the Pike Co. area] can be purchased from Joe R. Skeens, HC 68, Box 225, Prestonsburg, KY 41653. Unfortunately there is only a surname index so any research can be time-consuming. Brief abstracts of a few obits from unspecified years for the Union Assn. of Old Reg. Baptist Minutes [also many from the Pike Co. area] can be found on: "Old Regular Baptist Church Minutes Obituaries": <http://www.angelfire.com/ky/Obituaries>. It is easy to search names on this site, however full references are not given [i.e., year of Minutes or page number]. I know of at least three of us who have nearly complete collections of both the New Salem & Union Associations of Old Reg. Baptists Minutes going back to the late 1800's to present, and many will also be found at the Allara Library, Pikeville College. Obits on a regular basis started in 1895 for the New Salem Assn. and the first I see for the Union Assn. was for 1902. An unindexed 2 vol. set of minutes for the New Salem Assn. going back to 1825 [and it's parent Assn., the Burning Springs Assn., 1813-1824] has also been pub. by Dexter Dixon & Elder Walter Akers. Printing was by Executive Printing & Office Supplies, 215 College St., Pikeville, KY 41501 (1983). Not sure if any are left for sale. And then, there are the "Pike Co., KY Death Records, 1849-1909," by Dorcas M. Hobbs and John W. Picklesimer, Sr. 123 pp., 8.5x11, soft wrap-around cover, perfect bound, FULLNAME INDEX. Available from the Allara Library. [Last known cost was $14 but that was several years ago.] Jim W. 3. I found out Pike Co did not have a newspaper until 1925 at which time it was covered by Pike co News, they merged with the present Appalachian News Express in the 1970's. 3. Hello KYPIKE-L -- I'm new. In fact, I've yet to receive my first post from y'all. Nevertheless, I venture out to tell why I subscribed to this list. Any help locating information on the marriage (or anything else about these people): Daniel CLARK (c. 1836) born in or near Pikeville, KY. Sarah Frances UTTER (c. 1837) born in or near Tazewell, VA. They married about 1858. I hope in Pike Co., KY. Eventually they seem to have reached Lincoln Co., WV. I can see that lots of CLARKs must have passed through Pike Co. over the years. I'm hoping only one family of UTTERs did. The name is unusual enough that it should stand out in any records: census, land, marriage, tax, births, deaths, etc. Thanks for anything and everything. -- Rod.Bias@ASU.Edu Rodney L.
