She was retired as the assistant manager for Magic Mart and the daughter of the late Harlan Gross and the late Thelma Taylor Gross. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Bascom Smith and one son, David Lynn Smith. She is survived by her daughter, Andrea Kathleen Chaney and husband Butch; sister Kathleen Maggard Rice; grandchildren Eugene James Dustin Chaney, David Steven Reese Smith and Travis Lynn Smith; great-grandchildren Callie Rhys Chaney, Campbell Grae Chaney and Carlisle Blair Howard; special nephews Gregory Lee Maggard, Michael Glenn Maggard and Roger Dale Maggard, along with a host of family and friends. Arrangements are being handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard where the family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 2. Services will immediately follow with Fred Ballard and Lyndon Barger officiating. Interment will be at Smith Family Cemetery in Knott County. ***************************************** Floie Akers Floie Akers, 86, of London, passed away on Saturday, October 29 at Laurel Heights Nursing Home in London. She was the daughter of the late Wilson Lewis and the late Ollie M. Johnson Lewis, and was also preceded in death by brothers Claude and Carl Lewis and sisters Opha Combs, Linda Gowan and Rose Akers. She is survived by her husband, Willard Akers; daughter Danny R. Akers and Willard L. Akers, Jr.; sisters Bessie Shephard and Nola Brock; brothers Bernard Lewis; along with eight grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Arrangements were handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard where the family received friends on Sunday, October 30. Services were held on Monday, October 31 with Roger Bruner officiating. Interment was at Resthaven Cemetery in Jeff. ******************************************* Junior Couch Junior Couch, 64, of Seymour, Indiana, passed away on Friday, October 21 at his residence. Mr. Couch was born in Yerkes, on October 11, 1947, the son of the late Eli Pim and Sadie (Sizemore) Couch. He is survived by his daughter, Tina Johnson of Hazard; son Jerry Couch of Hazard; sisters Helen Rice of Austin, In. and Brenda Gay of Buckhorn: brothers Charlie Couch of Austin, In., Jerry Couch of Austin, Taylor Couch of Austin, and Freddie Couch of Austin. He is also survived by three grandchildren. The funeral services was held on Monday, October 24 at Buchanan Funeral Home in Austin with Rev. Marvin McIntosh officiating. Burial was at Spurgeon Cemetery in Austin. ******************************************** Sylvia Caldwell Sylvia Colwell, 74, of Hazard, died Tuesday, October 25 at the Greg and Noreen Wells Hospice Care Center. She was the daughter of the late Sherman Campbell and the late Edith Johnson Campbell, and was also preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Colwell. She is survived by daughters Cheryl Gabbard, Corine Rayburn and Josie Essenmacher; sons Charles Lee Colwell and Sammy Colwell; sisters Gertrude Colwell, Loretta Howard and Nola Corrnelson; brothers Wayne Campbell and Laverne Campbell, along with 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Arrangements were handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard where the family received friends on Thursday, October 27. Services were held on Friday, October 28 with James Hamblin officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery in Hazard. ********************************************* Glenna Hendrickson Glenna Hendrickson, 77, of Hazard, died Wednesday, October 26 at the Hazard ARH medical center. Mrs. Hendrickson worked at Watsons and Peebles for many years, and was the daughter of the late Charlie Campbell and the late Zola Osborne Campbell. She was also preceded in death by her son, Lon Hendrickson, and sisters Donna Metcalf, Jackqulyn Boggs and Betty Crookshanks. She is survived by her husband, Lon Hendrickson; daughter Connie Colwell; sons David Feltner, Patrick Feltner and J.R. Hendrickson; sisters Nora Hughes and Patricia Cornett; brothers James M. Campbell, Charles D. Campbell and Gary L. Campbell; along with five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Arrangements were handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard where the family received friends on Friday, October 28. Services were held on Saturday, October 29 with Dana Feltner officiating. Interment will be at Resthaven Cemetery located at Jeff. ********************************************** Mary Gorman Mary P. Gorman, who lived at Wesley Village in Wilmore, Ky., went to be with the Lord on October 25. She was a loving mother and grandmother, and was born on May 1, 1925 in Rogersville, Tn. After her marriage, she lived in Hazard where she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School for over 25 years and was a member of the church choir. She was also involved in the women's work of the church, and was a troop leader of the Brownie Scouts for several years. After moving to Lexington 23 years ago, she was an active member of the Tates Creek Presbyterian Church and the church choir. She attended Brenau College in Gainsville, Ga. where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She was a member of the Lexington Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Griffin Gate Garden Club, where she served on the board for 16 years. She also served on the board of the Griffin Gate Community Association. Surviving her is her loving family: one son, Bill Gorman and his wife Missy of Hazard and Lexington; daughter Suzanne Gorman of Yalaha, Florida; granddaughters Casey Gorman Bowers and Haley Gorman Clark and husband James, both of Lexington, and great-granddaughters Alexandra Clark and Catherine Clark. A family graveside service was held in Rogersville on Saturday, October 29. Memorials suggested to Wesley Village Senior Living Community in Wilmore, or Tates Greek Presbyterian Church in Lexington. Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard was in charge of arrangements. ********************************************** Dale Campbell Dale Campbell, 60, departed this life on Saturday, October 22 at his residence in Combs. He was born in Perry County, the son of the late Amin Campbell and the late Mildred Campbell, and was also preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa Campbell, and was a member of the Busy Pentecostal Church. He is survived by his wife, Irene Campbell of Combs; son Randy Dale Campbell of Tennessee; brothers Gary Morton Campbell of Hazard and Danny Pearl Campbell of Williamstown, Ohio; sisters Joan Combs of Indianapolis and Trina Hamblin of Hazard; along with 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, October 26 at the Potter's House Ministry in Walker Branch with J.L. McIntosh and Bert Baker officiating. Interment followed in the Sebastian Branch Cemetery located in Breathitt County. Engle-Walker Funeral Home of Hazard was in charge of arrangements ************************************************ Andy Combs Andy Combs, 85, departed this life on Monday, October 24 at his residence in Lee County. He was born in Hazard, the son of the late Richmond Combs and the late Melissa Ann Stamper Combs, and was also preceded in death by his wife, Lillie Combs; daughter-in-law Kathy Combs son-in-law Teddy Patrick and sisters Angeline Combs, Goldie Combs and Alena Sumner. Andy was a life-long resident of Perry County with the exception of the last 15 years he had been living in Beattyville. He worked at the Perry County Courthouse for 24 years. He is survived by his son, Zendell Combs and wife Pam of Hindman; daughter Shirley Reed and husband James of Beattyville; sister Myrtle Hayes of Hazard; grandchildren Shannon, Sheridan, Spring, Jimmy, Jay, Holly, Dusty, Greg, Raiah and Amy; great-grandchildren Jayse, Cadyn, Tyler, Alex, Josh and Lexie, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Services were conducted on Thursday, October 27 at the Church of God Our Savior in Heidelberg, Kentucky with Chris Holiday officiating. Interment followed in the Combs Family Cemetery located at Ida May, Kentucky. Engle-Walker Funeral Home of Hazard was in charge of arrangements. *********************************************** Betty Davidson Betty Jean Davidson, 75, died Wednesday, October 27. She was born on December 16, 1935 to the late Arnold and Lona Davidson, and was also preceded in death by her brother, Elliot "Bud" Davidson. She is survived by brothers Curt and Ann Davidson of Illinois, Fred and Linda Davidson of Illinois, Donnie and Linda Davidson of Indiana; and sister Delma Johnson of Grapevine; special cousins William Glenn Riggs and Mary Libby Rice, both of Bonnyman, along with a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on Sunday, October 30 at the Engle Walker Perry County Chapel in Hazard with A. J Miller officiating. Burial took place at the Red Hill Cemetery located at Chavies. ************************************************ Mary Duff Pilkin Mary Duff Pilkin, 63, passed away on Wednesday, October 27 at the Hazard ARH medical center. She is survived by her son, Timothy Lee Pilkin and wife Andrea of Yeaddiss; daughters Angel Pilkin of Chicago and Peggy Logan of Slemp; brothers Hiram Duff, Dennis Duff, Beecher Duff and Charles Duff; sisters Margie Bailey, Wanda Sue Duff, Pauline Burke and Althea Duff; grandchild Isaiah Pilkin; along with a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Services were held on Saturday, October 29 at the Big Leatherwood First Baptist Church in Delphia with Don Kilburn officiating. Burial took place at Stoney Fork Cemetery. Brashear-Callahan Funeral Home of Viper was in charge of arrangements. *************************************************
