He was a retired welder in the coal mines and was the son of the late Abe Collins and the late Maudie Lewis Collins. He was also preceded in death by his son, Seldon Ray Collins, three sisters and seven brothers. He is survived by his wife, Cleo Collins; daughters Velda Ann Lewis, Patricia Melton, Melissa Lynn Melton, Barbara Sue Collins and Celeste Sizemore; son Caleb H. Collins; sisters Gladys Vires and Betty Jane Melton along with 23 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a host of family and friends. Arrangements are being handed by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard. Visitation will be held at the Church of the Lord Jesus where the family will receive friends after 5 p.m. on Thursday, August 25. Funeral services will begin at noon on Friday, August 26 with Kennard Morris and Della Morris officiating. Interment will be at Melton Cemetery at Brownsfork. ******************************************* Arizona Vires Arizona Colleen Vires, 28, of Krypton, died Monday, August 22. She was employed at Taco Bell and was preceded in death by her father, Leo Vires, and paternal grandfather Tom Vires. She is survived by her mother, Marilyn Vires; sister Heather Hankins; brother Dewayne Combs; boyfriend Wesley Farmer Napier; paternal grandmother Claudine Vires; maternal grandparents Larry and Lonnie Reams; nieces Sierra Stidham, Tammy Miller and Mikenzie Gwinn, along with a host of uncles, cousins, family and friends. Arrangements are being handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard where the family will receive friends from noon to 3 p.m. on Thursday, August 25. Funeral services will follow and a graveside service will take place at noon on Saturday, August 27 at the Vires Family Cemetery in Chavies. ******************************************** Doris Loraine Callahan Doris Loraine Callahan, 78, of Little Leatherwood, passed away on Monday, August 15 at the Hazard ARH medical center. She is survived by her husband, Eugene Callahan; sons Michael E. Callahan and wife Tonya of Little Leatherwood and Tony Lee Callahan of Ulvah, Ky.; daughter Linda Kay Creech and husband Jack of Slemp, along with three brothers, two sisters, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, special friend Robert and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. A private graveside service was held on Thursday, August 18 at the Callahan Cemetery in Little Leatherwood with Scottie Halcomb officiating. Brashear-Callahan Funeral Home of Viper was in charge of arrangements. ******************************************** Lucinda Napier Lucinda Napier, 81, died Thursday, August 18 in Lexington, Ky. Born on September 19, 1929 to the late Callie and Muncy Fugate in Jackson, Kentucky, she was a lifelong member of the Big Creek Baptist and more recently, the Solid Rock Fellowship Church in Hazard. She was preceded in death by her parents, Muncy Fugate and Callie O'Bryan Fugate; husband Ed Napier; and brothers Pearl and Earl Swift. She is survived by daughter Pamela D. Neace and husband Wallace Dean; grandchildren D.W Eversole and wife Tara and Christina Joy Owens and husband John; great-grandchildren Chloe Eversole and Brayden and Nate Owens; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Sunday, August 21 at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home of Hazard with Doug Bryant officiating. Burial took place at Riverside Cemetery in Hazard. ********************************************* Emmitt Burns Emmitt "Bob" Burns, 76, of Hazard, died Saturday, August 20 at the Hazard ARH medical center. He was a U.S. Army veteran, a retired coal miner and a member of the Happy Freewill Baptist Church. He was the son of the late James Burns and the late Millie Hignite Burns, and was also preceded in death by sisters Nanna Mae Combs, Rachel Napier, Margaret Smith and Laura Burns, and brothers Pearl, John and James, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Lois Burns; daughters Barbara Smith and husband Darrell and Deborah Slemp and husband David; sisters Priscilla Hurt and Dorothy Smith; brothers Sidney Burns; grandchildren Natasha Gregory and husband Lane, Joshua Smith and wife Misty and Corey Daniel Smith; great-grandchildren Joshua Landon and Rylan Jacob, along with a host of family and friends. Arrangements were handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard where the family received friends on Sunday, August 21. Services were held at Happy Freewill Baptist Church on Monday, August 22 with Rodney Smith and Jody Maggard officiating. Interment was at Burns Family Cemetery at Upper Second Creek. ********************************************* Linda Sparkman Linda Sue Sparkman, 55, of Hazard, passed away Saturday, August 20 at the hospice care center in Hazard. She was the owner of Silk Purse and worked as an interior designer. She was the daughter of the late Denver Curtis Campbell and Geraldine "Gerri" Campbell. She is survived by her husband, Faron Sparkman; sons Wesley Graham Sparkman and wife Calrissa and Cedrick Warner Sparkman; sisters Virginia McCombs and husband Charles and Maxi Reynolds and husband Tim; and grandchild Madora June Sparkman. Arrangements are being handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard. The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 23. Funeral services will immediately follow with Rev. Michael Barnett officiating. Interment will be at Campbell-Sparkman Cemetery in Hazard. ********************************************** George Farmer George Farmer, 91, of Hazard, died Thursday, August 18 at the Hazard ARH medical center. He was a retired coal miner and son of the late Ed and Viola Farmer. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Farmer; sons Jerry and Don; brothers Jimmy and Richard and sister Drucilla. He is survived by daughters Janice Reynolds and Paula Campbell; sons Jimmy Farmer and Doug Farmer; grandchildren Brian, Michael, Jeremy, Josh, Jacob and Dana; great-grandchildren John David, Ethan Michael, Nikki, Patty and Jamie Ann, and a host of family and friends. Arrangements were handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard where the family received friends on Saturday, August 20. Services followed with Rev. Michael Barnett officiating. Interment was at Brewer Cemetery at Cutshin. *********************************************** Mary Sweet Mary Sweet, 78, of Hazard, died Wednesday, August 17 at the hospice care center in Hazard. She was the daughter of the late Gid Brown and the late Ethel Creech Brown, and was also preceded in death by her husband, George Sweet, life companion Bill Cusick and son Marcus Dale Sweet. She is survived by daughters Pamela Watts and Shannon Campbell; sons Ricky Arlan, Roger Lynn and Randy Allen Sweet; sister Betty Sandmeyer; brothers Paul, David and Joe Brown; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Arrangements were handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard where the family received friends on Friday, August 19. Services were held on Saturday, August 20 with Rodney Smith and Jody Maggard officiating. Interment was at Resthaven Cemetery in Jeff. ************************************************ Ronald Lee Combs Ronald Lee Combs, 75, of Happy, died Wednesday, August 17 at the Hazard ARH medical center. He was a retired coal miner and was preceded in death by his mother, Eva Lee Plowman. He is survived by his wife, Christine Combs; father Curby Combs; daughter Sherry Fecker and husband Michael; sisters Sue Carroll, Wanda Moore and Linda Tincher; brother Douglas Combs; grandson Michael Brandon Fecker and a host of family and friends. Arrangements were handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard where the family received friends on Thursday, August 18. Services were at Happy Freewill Baptist Church on Friday, August 19 with Rodney Smith and Jody Maggard officiating. Interment was at Resthaven Cemetery in Jeff. ************************************************* Wallace Farrell Napier Wallace Farrell Napier, 65, passed away at the Richmond Hospice Compassionate Care Center on Friday, August 19. He was born in Hazard, the son of the late Napoleon "Pole" and Edith Napier. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1966. He served his country proudly in the Vietnam War until he was severely wounded and received a permanent medical retirement. Wallace received many awards and medals for his service, including the Purple Heart. Since his return from Vietnam, he had been a strong advocate for our country's veterans. Wallace was later awarded the Disabled Veteran of the Year award, and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Vietnam Veterans of America and the Purple Heart Organization. He served as the Disabled American Veterans State Commander in 1991-92. He served on the DAV National Executive Committee, representing Kentucky and Indiana. Mr. Napier was a member of the Berea Church of Christ. He always helped other veterans in any way they needed help. Wallace and Linda had two children, Bradley Scott Napier and wife Melissa and Beverly Renee Gaylord and husband Sam. He is also survived by grandson William "Will" Bradley Napier; sisters Mary Lena Hurt and husband Sid and Wilma Kay Spurlock and Lotta Marie Roland; brothers Elzia Darrell Napier and wife Peggy, Eugene Napier and wife Charlene and Darrell Napier and wife Sarah. Preceding him in death were his sisters Reva Fritsch, Dale Spinhirne and Martha Ann Combs and his brother Napoleon "Pole" Napier, Jr. The family of Mr. Napier is very proud in everything he has done and will be greatly missed by all. Arrangements are being handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard where family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. on Monday, August 22. Services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Bro. Jerry Brown and Charles Moore officiating. Interment will be at Jones Cemetery at Lost Creek. *************************************************
