"Nana" Napier, 87, of Sturgis, Michigan, passed away Wednesday, August 10, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. She was born February 19, 1924 in Hardburly, Kentucky, a daughter of Ermindo and Pasqua (Felici) Nucci. She had resided in Sturgis since 1967, coming from Kentucky. On May 7, 1957 she married Irvin Napier in Kentucky. He died September 1, 1969. Eda retired in 1990 from Ram Products in Sturgis following 17 years of dedicated employment. Following her retirement, she had worked at the Golden Corral Restaurant in Sturgis for several years. She was also a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sturgis. Eda enjoyed attending activities at the Sturgis Senior Center, playing Bingo and loved time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. She is survived by daughters Angela Griffith and husband Billy of Sturgis, Peggy Napier of Kalamazoo, Sheila Mowry and husband Dan of Portage, Mari Ann Alldredge and husband Richard of Sturgis and Traci Donley and husband Richard of Sturgis; grandchildren Heather Anders, Courtney Griffith, Jonathan Wood, Michael Wood, Alison Mowry, Adam Mowry, Stephanie Douangmala and husband Kenny, Lauren Alldredge, Christina Donley, Daniel Donley and Amanda Donley, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Navi Grigsby, and brothers Dill Nucci, Confort Nucci, Enido Nucci and Perfect Nucci. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, August 15 at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes, Hackman Chapel, located at 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI. A Funeral mass celebrating her life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 16 at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sturgis. The Rev. Father Richard Fritz will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn cemetery in Sturgis. The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mrs. Napier's memory consider the American Cancer Society, 1400 West Milham, Kalamazoo, MI 49024 or the Alzheimer's Association, 2300 Portage St., Suite 341, Kalamazoo, MI 49001. *********************************************** Lanora Williams Lanora Williams, 45, passed away on Tuesday, August 9 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. Born May 23, 1966 in Hazard, she was the daughter of the late Austin and Grace Combs Williams. She was also a registered nurse employed by UK-Good Samaritan Hospital and of the Pentecostal faith. Survivors include a brother, Robert Williams and wife Linda of Lexington; sister Magen Williams Smith and husband Leonard of Fairfield, Ohio; sister in love Kathy Atwell of Lexington, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, August 12 at Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard. Services will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 13 with Pastor Gary Ballinger officiating. Burial will follow at the Holliday Cemetery at Ary. *********************************************** Eli Hurt Eli Hurt, 71, of Hazard, died Wednesday, August 10 at hospice care center in Hazard. He was a retired coal miner of 48 years and the son of the late Andrew Jackson "Donut" Hurt and the late Theonia Smith Hurt. He was also preceded in death by sisters Hester, Marjorie "Tootsie," Lois "Butch' and Kathleen, along with brothers Virgil, Big John, Clyde and Ishmeal "Peanut." He is survived by his wife, Sharon Hurt; sister Jean; brothers Glenn and Raymond; special friends Chris Grigsby and Johnny Williams and a host of nieces, nephews and coal miner friends. Arrangements are being handled by Maggard Brothers Funeral Home of Hazard where the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 pm. on Thursday, August 11. Services will begin at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 12 with Randall Short and Ricky Smith officiating. Interment will be at Clear Fork Cemetery on Lotts Creek. *********************************************** Rickie Williams Rickie Allen Williams, 43, died Wednesday, August 10 at his home in London. He was the son of Lucinda Back Campbell and the late Arvel Lee Williams, and was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ann Hatfield Williams. He is also survived by his daughter, Brianna Marie Williams; sisters Vickie Rice and husband Bo and Sue Combs and husband Robert; nieces Nicole Rice and Shae Watts and nephews Blake Williams and Kyle Rice. Arrangements are being handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard where the family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, August 12. Services will immediately follow with Rodney Smith officiating. Interment will be at Lewis Cemetery at Viper. ************************************************* Marcus Sweet Marcus Dale Sweet, 62, passed away Sunday, August 7 at his residence in Hindman. He was the son of Mary Brown Sweet and the late George Sweet, and was a Retired truck driver by occupation. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, talking on the CB and spending time with his grandchildren and family. He was preceded in death by his father, George Sweet, and daughter Sherrie Lee Sweet. He is survived by his mother, Mary Sweet of Hindman; sons Mike Sweet of Hazard and Dwayne Applegate of Hazard; brothers Ricky Sweet of Hazard, Roger Sweet of Tennessee and Randy Sweet of Hazard; sisters Pam Watts of Hazard and Shannon Campbell of Indiana; 9 Grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, August 10 at 5 p.m. at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home of Hazard. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. ************************************************ James Friley James Friley, 64, died Friday, August 5 at the Hazard ARH medical center. He was born in Fourseam, the son of Agnes Grimes Friley and the late George Dewey Friley. He was also preceded in death by his sister Patty Ann Johnson and grandparents Ida and Clarence Grimes. James was a coal miner and former Hazard police officer from 1970 to 1977, and was also an avid UK Fan. He is survived by his wife, Betty Friley of Viper; mother Agnes Friley of Jackson; daughters Della Friley of Viper and Jenny Friley-Smith and husband Travis of Christopher; brothers Grayson Friley and wife Jackie of Knott County, Roger Friley and wife Rose of Jackson and Billy Joe Friley of Jackson; sister Peggy Allen and husband Larry of Jackson; grandchildren Caitlyn Friley and Connor Friley, and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday August 9 at 7 p.m. at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home on East Main Street with Curt Eversole and Grayson Friley officiating. Military Rites will be performed by the Hazard Perry County D.A.V. Chapter 64. He is survived by his son, Jerry D. Adams of Leatherwood; daughters Melissa D. Hibbard of Leatherwood, Kimberly Kaye Griffith of Slemp and Lovella L. Williams of Slemp; 5 brothers, 4 sisters, 3 step grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Visitation was held on Sunday, August 7 at the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in Slemp. Services will begin at 1 p.m. at the church on Monday, August 8 with Eugene Baker officiating. Burial will take place at Beechfork Cemetery. Brashear-Callahan Funeral Home of Viper was in charge of arrangements ************************************************* Billie Phillips Mrs. Billie Phillips, 83, died on Friday, August 5 at the Hazard Health & Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Campbell County, Tennessee, the daughter of the late George William Sweat and the late Lou Lay Sweat, and was also preceded in death by her husband, Joe Mitt Phillips, and sister Shirley Christy. Billie was a Member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and enjoyed reading books and was a member of Pat's Book Club. She is survived by daughters Bridgett Lafayette Maslow and husband Fredrick of Beaver Creek, Ohio, Shelby Jo Hoel of Montana, and Mona Anita Howard and husband Doyl of Krypton; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday August 7 at the Engle-Walker Perry County Chapel on Morton Blvd. with Bro. Vanison Ritchie, Paul Timothy Sluss, Jim Sluss and Jerry Utt officiating. Their will be a graveside service on Monday at 2 p.m. at the Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio. In Lieu of Flowers Donations may be made to Hospice of the Bluegrass. ************************************************ Brandon Cockrell Brandon David Cockrell, 28, of Bulan, departed this life on Monday, August 1 in South Carolina. Brandon was born in Hazard, the son of Clyde David Cockrell and Kyla Gwen Fagues Cockrell. He was a lifelong resident of Perry County and enjoyed four wheeler riding, movie nights with friends and family, and muscle cars. He was affiliated with the Tribbey Church of God, and by occupation was a pretrial officer with the Perry County Courts and Justice Center. He is survived by his wife, Kelly Cockrell of Bulan; parents David and Kyla Cockrell of Bulan; children Kobe and Morgan Pratt of Bulan; sisters Jolene and Kasey Cockrell, both of Bulan; maternal grandmother Rachel Grigsby of Bulan; paternal grandfather Clyde Cockrell of Bulan; maternal grandparents Homer and Maxine Fagues of Bulan; paternal grandparents Pauline and Edward Powell of Georgia, and a host of aunts, uncles, close friends, relatives and co-workers. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, August 8, at 2 p.m. at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home of Hazard with Homer Fagues, Karen Campbell, Johnny Ambrose and Mike Smith officiating. She was the daughter of the late Dudley Coomer and the late Frances Asher Sizemore, and was also preceded in death by her husband, Higgins Blair, brother Jimmy Coomer and best friend Gerthan Neace. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Young and husband James; sons Jimmy Blair, David Blair and wife Janet and Sonny Blair and wife Cynthia; sister Jackie Adams; brothers Dudley Coomer, Jr., Stanley Ray Coomer, Albert Coomer, Johnny Comer and James Coomer; grandchildren James Blair, Sonny Blair, Jr., Kaitlyn Blair, Makayla Blair and Timmy Branson. She was the daughter of the late Mabel Sumner and was also preceded in death by her grandmother, Nancy Ann Sumner; brother James Earl Sumner; and son William Randall Madden. She is survived by her husband, William "Bill" Madden; son William Alden Madden and wife Pamela; sisters Colleen Hawn and husband Doug and Donna Sue Stamper; brother Wendell Smith and wife Vickie; and grandchildren Haley Madden and Cameron Caldwell. He was the son of the late John Brewer and the late Shirley McCoy Brewer. He is survived by his wife, Vadus "Ruddy" Brewer; daughters Allie Brewer and J.T. Elsea and Jessica Morris and husband Shane; sons Michael Joe Brewer and wife Jackie and Dustin Wayne Brewer; brother Lonnie Brewer and wife Mary Rose; grandchildren Jonathan Brewer, Dalton Brewer, Mikayla Brewer, John Brewer, Jaden Morris and Jenna Morris; nephew Paul Michael Brewer and great-nieces Ashley Combs and husband Wesley and Stephanie Profitt and husband Gary.
