"Ted" Adkins for 55 years, passed away at home with Ted by her side, where you almost always find him. She was also survived by her nephew, or as she more often called him, "our youngin," Glen Combs, his wife Jamie and their children (Juanita and Ted's "grandchildren") Whitley and Taylor, all of Lexington. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Paul Adkins of Salvisa, Ky., nephews David Combs of Lexington and Les Combs of Las Vegas. Juanita was born in Perry County in 1931, and was preceded in death by her father, John Kilburn, and her mother, Artha Kilburn. Ted and Juanita worked for the City of Hazard for 47 years. Through her job she met thousands of people, none more special to her than her friend and caregiver, Juanita Caudill of Hazard. In addition to her job as dispatcher with the Hazard Police Department, "Little Juanita" spent many nights helping clean City Hall, then in recent months providing care for Juanita at home and in the hospital. Juanita's caregivers also included her cousins Bessie and Virgil Eversole, and while they didn't know her for long, Mary Moss and the Hospice team were very important to Juanita in her last days. Ted and Juanita met in Viper and were married on Groundhog Day 1956 in Fresno, California. After returning to Hazard in 1960, they were seldom seen apart, working first at the old Johnson's Funeral Home on East Main Street, then at the High Street City Hall before the current City Hall was built in 1980. As part of her job, Juanita was responsible for taking care of Ms. Edd, Mayor Bill Gorman's pet parrot for the past 26 years. Edd was "retired" to a new home in March of this year when Juanita was no longer able to care for her. Visitation for Juanita Adkins will be held on Friday, May 6 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon at Hazard City Hall. Funeral services will be at City Hall at noon on Saturday. Burial will be in the Eversole family cemetery on Big Creek. Jimmy Carter of Lexington will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Hospice of the Bluegrass or the Kentucky River Regional Animal Shelter. *********************************************** Vickie Jean Brotherton Vickie Jean Brotherton, 54, of Hazard, died Wednesday, May 4 at the Hazard ARH medical center.
