HAZARD MAN ARRESTED IN SHOOTING DEATH Lexington Herald-Leader (KY) - Thursday, November 23, 1995 Author: STAFF, WIRE REPORTS TYPO -- Police yesterday captured an Eastern Kentucky man wanted in a shooting death. Perry County Sheriff Les Burgett received a tip that Merle Pelphrey, 44, was at a home in Typo. Burgett and deputies arrested the Hazard man without incident at 1:50 p.m. Pelphrey has been charged with murder in the shooting death of James V. Combs , 36, just before midnight Monday. The Combs resident was shot once in the chest. The shooting occurred at Dryhill in Leslie County, where Mr. Combs was trying to pawn some property. Pelphrey was being held in the Leslie County Jail. Funeral services for Mr. Combs will be 10 a.m. Friday at Engle Funeral Home in Hazard. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
