    2. Hazard Herald Obituaries: Week of Jan 2, 2008 Clifford Wooton Clifford Wooton passed away on Sunday, December 23 at the Hazard A.R.H. Hospital. At the time of his death, he was 68 years of age. The son of the late George M. and Laura Morgan Wooton, he was also preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, Bert and John Wooton and two sisters, Orlena Daniels and Helen Fields. Mr. Wooton is survived by his widow, Betty Wooton, his children, Winnie Baker, Henrietta Roberts, Savanna, George Wooton, Jimmy Wooton and Elbert Wooton. He is also survived by his sisters, Remola Spencer, Eva Jennings, Thelma Lynette, Edna Walls, Betty Bulp, Christine Bishop and Nancy Howard. Along with his eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, he is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The family received friends on Wednesday evening, December 26, at Maggard’s Mountain View Chapel where the funeral service was conducted on Thursday afternoon with Dean DeMaris, Carl Linsy and Clifford Colwell officiating. Interment was at the Family Cemetery at Busy. The staff at Maggard’s Mountain View Chapel was entrusted with all arrangements. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mary Anita Clarice Steele Evans Mary Anita Clarice Steele Evans passed away at her home in Nicholasville on Thursday, December 20. At the time of her death, she was 87 years of age. She was born in Perry County, the third child of Julius C. “Doc” Steele and Mary Eversole Steele. Her father, a well-known civic and business leader, served as Municipal Judge and Mayor of the City of Hazard. He was President of Hyden ’s Citizens Bank and operated drugstores in Hazard and Manchester. Mary Eversole’s family settled here at the end of the 18th century and played a major role in the development of Perry county. The family homeplace, constructed above Chavies about 1800, still stands today as Perry County’s oldest house. Mrs. Evans’ parents’ ancestry include a number of notable Eastern Kentucky names, including Combs, Cornett, Couch, Lewis, Duff, McIntosh, Sizemore and others. Mrs. Evans was schooled in Hazard before beginning high school at Sayre College in Lexington. She attended Centre College in Danville in 1938 where she studied liberal arts. In 1940, she transferred to the University of Kentucky, graduating in 1942. While at U of K, she was a member of the Wildcat Marching Band, Alpha Phi Delta Sorority and the Phi Beta Honorary Fraternity for Women. Following college, she was with the Manhatten Project at the Oak Ridge Atomic Energy Commission in Tennessee from 1943-48. She returned to the University of Kentucky where she was with the Music Department until the 1960s when she moved to Orlando, Florida, where she worked as an office manager for the Montgomery Ward Company. In 1962, she married Carlton Fannin. After his death and her retirement, she married William Evans of Georgia. They enjoyed traveling together, visiting friends and family across the country. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her brother, George Elmer Steele, who died in 1927, and her sister, Cleo Dean, who died in 2006. She is survived by nephews Richard Mandt and his wife Judith, Edward J. Mandt and his wife Martha, George W. Dean, five great nephews and their families and a special friend, Nellie Collins. Graveside services were held at the Englewood Cemetery at 1:00 PM on Thursday where she was laid to rest with her beloved parents, her brother and sister. Pastor Lonnie Moore of the Tabernacle Baptist Church, Nicholasville, conducted the graveside service. Hospital. At the time of his death, he was 67 years of age. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mose, Sr. and Eva Lee Stacy Couch. He is survived by his widow, June Couch, eleven step-children, his sister, Ailene Anderson of Arizona and his brother, Roy Couch of Maryland. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The family received friends on Friday, December 28, until the funeral service, which was conducted at 1:00 PM at Maggard’s Mountain View Chapel. Interment was at the Couch Family Cemetery at Avawam. Dixon, 83, of Hamilton , Ohio, formerly of North Vernon and Osgood, Indiana, died on Friday, December 21, in Hamilton, Ohio. He was born July 9, 1924, in Blackey, the son of the late Dawson and Hattie Whitaker Dixon. He was a member of the CCCs, a Kentucky Colonel and the Versailles Church of Christ. He was an avid fan of the “Duke,” John Wayne and Western movies. He loved gospel, religious and country music. He also enjoyed traveling. He retired as a Tool and Die worker after thirty years of employment with the Fischer Body Company. He was the beloved father of Charles and wife Kay Dixon of North Vernon, Indiana, Judy Polasky of Hamilton, Ohio, and Theresa Carter of Florida. He was “ Dad Dewey” to Albert and wife Rosie Burke of Moores Hill, Indiana, Diane and husband Dave Daugherty of Osgood, Indiana, and Deborah and husband Richard Lane of Moores Hill, Indiana. He was the baby brothers of Edna Caudill of Louisville, Kate Hampton of Aspion, Tennessee, and Bill Dixon of Toledo, Ohio. He was Grandpa to nineteen grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances and brothers Vernon, Steve and Woodrow Dixon and sister, Nina Wampler. Friends were received on Thursday, December 27, at Rullman Hunger Denney Funeral Home, Aurora, Indiana, where the funeral service was conducted on Thursday afternoon with Brother Dale Day officiating. He is survived by his wife, Faye Eckles, his daughter, Barbara Eckles also of Bulan, his sister, Eva Burton of Hazard and his brother, Charles “Buck” Eckles of Ohio. He is also survived by a host of other family members and friends. Medical Center. At the time of her death, she was 84 years of age. She was a lifelong resident of Perry County, a homemaker and a member of the Napfor Church of the Living God. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Hallie Napier Johnson, her husband, Douglas Earl Campbell, her daughter, Janet Campbell, her brothers, Robert and Bill Johnson, Jr. and her sister, Lucy Campbell. Mrs. Campbell is survived by her son, Douglas J. and wife Teressa Campbell of Viper; her daughter, Pamela and husband Calvin Williams, also of Viper; her grandchildren, Christy, Audrey, Brittany, Sarah, Ryan and Rebekah, her great-grandchildren, Will, Ben and Reagan. Also with her caregiver, Rita Napier, she is also survived by a host of other relatives and friends. At the time of her death, she was 84 years of age. Along with her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Carrie Combs Stanifer. Mrs. Adams is survived by her daughter, Rita Faye Breeding of Morgan, Ohio; her two sons, Jack Adams of Hazard and David Adams of Sycamore Township, Ohio; her two sisters, Sue Bird and Shirley Verrill, both of London and her brother, Robert Stanifer of Morgan, Ohio. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, Kent Adams and Wendy Feltner, both of Hazard, Bryan Adams of Georgetown, Rodney Breeding and Rhonda Seftion of Morgan, Ohio, three great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Mr. Centers, a resident of Harrogate, Tennessee, passed away at his home on Friday, December 21. He was born on April 8, 1951, in Knott County remembered Sassafras and Vicco as his home for many years. The son of the late Everett, Sr. and Hallie Estep Centers, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Linda Johnson. A member of the Potters House of God in Columbus, Ohio, he is survived by his widow, Robert Mills Centers, his son Brad and daughter Cara Beth, all of Harrogate, Tennessee; his brother, Ray Centers and sister Fern Centers, both of Sassafras and a host of nieces and nephews, including Jeff Centers of Hazard and Brandon Centers of Knott County, as well as a host of other relatives and friends. Medical Center. At the time of his death, he was 78 years of age. He was the son of the late Green and Susie Baker. Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Baker and a grandson, Travis Baker. Mr. Baker is survived by his children, Paul and wife Merrill Baker of Arkansas, Michael Baker, Ricky Baker and wife Jentie, Leon Baker and wife Missy, Tommy Baker and wife Mona and Alice and husband Clifford Stidham, all of Yerkes, and Shirley Lewis and husband Kenneth of Manchester. He is survived by a brother, Earl Baker of Ohio and a sister, Cora Collins of Napfor. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, six step grandchildren, five step great-grandchildren along with a host of other relatives and friends. The burial was at the Scalem Cemetery at Yerkes. All arrangements were entrusted to the staff at the Engle-Walker Perry County Chapel. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Miranda Travis Young Combs Miranda Travis Young Combs of Hazard died on Saturday, December 29, at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington. At the time of her death, the member of The Bible Baptist Church in Hazard was twenty-three years of age. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Kiley Jayne Combs, maternal grandmother, Bertha Jane Godsey and paternal grandmother, Charity Young. She is survived by her parents, Travis and wife Beth Young and Wanda Howard and husband Mark Howard. She is also survived by her fianc/e, Kenneth Wanamaker, her brother, Dusty Don Young, her step-sister, Wendi and husband Jeff Buxton, her grandfathers, Elmer Godsey and J.C. Young, her aunts, Linda Combs, Anita Ritchie, Lorine Ritchie, Wilma Gross, Pam Young and Sally Duff, her uncles, Larry Godsey, Scott, Randy and Charles Young. She is also survived by a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. Friends were received on Monday evening, December 31, at Maggard’s Mountain View Chapel where the funeral service was conducted on Tuesday morning, January 1, with Mike Seals and Rev. Dean DeMaris officiating. Interment was at the Polly-Noble Cemetery at Watts.
