JUST POSTING THE OBITUARY ON JOHN YOUNG FROM THE HAMILTON (OH) JOURNAL-NEWS 3/27/08 John Paul Young of Fairfield Township, OH died on March 24, 2008 at Mercy Hospital of Fairfield. He was born on April 2, 1925 in Black Mountain (a small mining town) in Perry County, KY, to Ethel (Anderson) and Wimmer Albert Young. Preceding John Paul in death were his parents; 4 brothers, Herbert, Roy, Daniel Webster, and an infant brother; and his godson, Jefferey Hugglestone. Surviving are his beloved wife, Olive Belle (Murrell) Young; son, Daniel Paul Young, D.V.M. (Sarah June Dean); daughter, Olivia Murrell Young Wallace, M.D. (Kenneth Franklin Wallace, D.M.D.); his 4 precious granddaughters: Hannah (8), Naomi (6) and Rachel (2) Young and Maggie Wallace (10); his goddaughters, Leslie (Hugglestone) Langham and Nancy Humbach; and his godsons, David and Jimmy Hugglestone. During WWII, at age 17 John Paul dropped out of high school and joined the US Navy on February 5, 1943. He served on a Patrol Craft (PC) as a signalman using flashing lights, semaphore, and flag hoists in! several major battles in the Pacific. His responsibility was to protect the troop and cargo ships in a huge convoy and to set up communications on beaches. Becoming exceptionally skilled in an extremely dangerous situation, he learned a very valuable lesson: he could succeed in whatever he chose to do, but he needed a good education. After more than 3 years in the US Navy, on April 9, 1946 he was honorably discharged as Signalman Second Class, USN. He then returned to high school, earned his GED and graduated from Cumberland Jr. College (Williamsburg, KY) and Carson Newman College (Jefferson City, TN). John Paul married Olive Belle Murrell, his best friend and life-long sweetheart (also a CN graduate), on May 30, 1953 in Fonde, KY. Together in 1956 they received their Master's Degrees from Miami University in Oxford. He continued his education at Miami and Case Western University, obtaining certification as a school psychologist and as a licensed psychologist to do private! practice. His 11 years of teaching were in KY, TN and OH (Hanover and Hamilton) followed by 24 years as a school psychologist in Fairfield and West Carrollton. Mr. Young was a life-long learner and avid reader. He loved animals and the great outdoors. He and his family hiked the northern portion of the Appalachian Trail. John Paul loved sailing and spent a year at sea on a 37-foot sailboat with Dr. Alan Springer (Miami University) and Admiral, the yellow lab. He was active in the US Coast Guard Auxiliary serving in numerous capacities. He especially enjoyed teaching navigation and boating safety. He was a devout Christian, a 54-year member of the First Baptist Church of Hamilton serving in several capacities (including Sunday school teacher and chairman of the Board of Deacons). John Paul was an avid believer in absolute equality and longed for the day when men and women of all races would be treated equally and could become whatever they wanted to become in any field of service. A special thanks to William Krall, M.D., his family physician a! nd the many doctors and nurses at Mercy who so lovingly and skillfully cared for him. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., March 29, 2008 at the First Baptist Church of Hamilton, 1502 Pyramid Hill, Hamilton, OH 45013 with Dr. Dennis Metzger, Rev. William C. Brantingham and Rev. Amber Murrell officiating. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., March 28, 2008 at the Avance Funeral Home & Crematory, 4976 Winton Rd., Fairfield. Burial will be at the Alder Branch Cemetery, Sevierville, TN. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Hamilton, Cumberland College in Williamsburg, KY or Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, TN.
