Smith John R. Smith, 68, of Middletown, passed away Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at Middletown Regional Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Ary, [Perry County], Ky., on June 3, 1935, to parents John C. and Mary (Campbell) Smith. John was a member of the First Baptist Church of Franklin. He served his country in the U.S. Army for three years as a medical corpsman in the late 1950’s at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C. John retired in 1997 from Armco Steel Corp., where he worked in management and research. Besides the love of his family, his second loves were golf and woodworking. John is survived by his wife of 47 years, Patty J. Smith; two sons, Dexter (Betty) Smith of West Chester and Dr. J. Michael (Sharon) Smith of Cincinnati; three wonderful grandchildren, Lincoln, Harrison, and Olivia Smith of Cincinnati; two sisters, Margie Shafer of Danville, Ill., and Geneva (Ira) Combs of Crofton, Ky.; and two brothers, Danny Smith of Oshkosh, Wis., and Jim (Judy) Smith of Lombard, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and two sisters. ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 28, at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd. at Bonita Drive, with Dr. Lance Cunningham officiating.
