    3. Since I've been offline and had some time on my hands, for those who were waiting to see what the pension record for John R. BEGLEY uncovered.........here is what I was able to determine about the children: John R. BEGLEY - married Betsy EVERSOLE (Divorced: 1846) Children: Martha BEGLEY Jane BEGLEY Abijah BEGLEY - died at abt. 16 years of age John R. BEGLEY - Relationship with Betsy WARD Children: Bradley BEGLEY Adella BEGLEY - m1. Abraham EVERSOLE; m2. Milton McINTOSH Lafayette BEGLEY John R. BEGLEY - married Lucy EVERSOLE (never divorced) Children: Marinda "Rindy" BEGLEY Marcus BEGLEY John R. BEGLEY - married Catherine SANDLIN Children: Infant (Boy) BEGLEY - died before named Alfred BEGLEY Elizabeth BEGLEY Nancy BEGLEY Susan BEGLEY Mary BEGLEY Elijah BEGLEY Orlena BEGLEY Tennessee BEGLEY Rachel BEGLEY - died bef. 1903 Sorry, Linda......there was no mention of Elizabeth COMBS and as you can see by the census records....John was too busy with Betsy EVERSOLE and Betsy WARD. There must be another John BEGLEY running around because this John was already married to Betsy EVERSOLE at the time the John BEGLEY that you were inquiring about was marrying Elizabeth COMBS. The pension record does mention that John BEGLEY and Betsy WARD were separated for awhile prior to their divorce. Sorry, Dona......there was no mention of Judy DAVIDSON. Not sure where researchers are picking her up at. I do have Robert Smith's Owsley County Books and it does mention Judy DAVIDSON in relation to John BEGLEY. According to Robert's information, the information about Judy DAVIDSON came from the BOWMAN Papers. You will have to weigh the sources on this one. This pension record is rather sad.......... Although I can't remember who made the two affidavits, there were two affidavits that stated that Abijah BEGLEY was the son of Betsy WARD. It sticks in my mind that both persons were up there in age and could have gotten the Betsy's mixed up, which is what I think happened based on piecing the story of Abijah BEGLEY's death. Abijah BEGLEY died in 1853 when his clothes caught on fire and he burned to death. John R. BEGLEY blamed Lucy EVERSOLE for the death of his son, which is why they separated. At the time of Abijah's death, Lucy EVERSOLE was washing the clothes and left Abijah unattended at the fireplace. All I can picture is Lucy with a household of kids, 5 under the age of 10 (Bradley, Adella, Lafayette, Rindy, and Marcus), and Abijah trying to help with washing the clothes. All you mom's know that her hands had to be full. I can picture something must have been going on with the other children and Lucy had gone to check on them.......thus leaving Abijah (age 16) ! watching the clothes. John R. BEGLEY never forgave Lucy for the death of his son, Abijah. And apparently Lucy was very bitter and wanted revenge. When John left Lucy, he took up with Catherine SANDLIN. Both John and Catherine were brought up on Adultry charges in Owsley County. The same day, John goes and files a divorce from Lucy in Perry County. The Adultry charges were thrown out in Owsley County. When Lucy was interviewed by the Special Examiner, she stated that the reason why she did not go to the Courthouse when the divorce was filed was because she wanted to "aggrevate" John. In her interview, Lucy swore that she was the legal widow of John R. BEGLEY. In his report to the Pension Office, the Special Examiner stated that Lucy was awful nervous when confronted about her marriage to John R. BEGLEY and the reason could have been because her current husband was present and within hearing range of the questions that were being asked. The Special Examiner felt that Lucy falsified her ans! wers in relation to her marriage to John R. BEGLEY. Half of the people who filed affidavits or depositions stated that Lucy and John were married, the other half thought they were not married and that Thomas MURRELL performed a "Mock" marriage ceremony. The Special Examiner could not find a marriage record for John and Lucy in Perry County, Ky. and the divorce that was filed by John in Perry County was thrown out. Thomas MURRELL was once a good minister that had gone bad. He was the minister of two churches and was later ousted by both churches when he decided to run around with several different women. So, was the marriage of John R. BEGLEY and Lucy EVERSOLE real or not? If they were not really married, she certainly got her revenge......the government had no choice but to reject Catherine SANDLIN's widow pension on the grounds that she was not John R. BEGLEY's legal widow based on the interview of one Lucy EVERSOLE-KISSINGER. The same interview in which the Special Examiner thought that Lucy falsified her answers, I might add. Because of this, John R. BEGLEY is now written in history as being a bigamist, and his children by Catherine SANDLIN are considered to be illegitimate. Poor Catherine must have been devastated........... There is a lot of relationship specified in this pension record that I will post later. Beth

    3. See, I even get the Betsy's mixed up...........the below should be Betsy EVERSOLE, not Betsy WARD. Betsy EVERSOLE and John R. BEGLEY were separated prior to their divorce. > Sorry, Linda......there was no mention of Elizabeth COMBS and as you can see by the census records....John was too busy with Betsy EVERSOLE and Betsy WARD.
