Hazard Herald Obituaries: Week of November 28, 2007 Edith Mae Pratt Edith Mae Pratt, a life-long resident of Perry County passed away on Wednesday, November 14. She was 74 years of age at the time of her death. The daughter of Green and Mattie Fields Baker, she was born at Pigeon Roost. Mrs. Pratt was a nurse’s aid and a member of the Little Willard Church of Christ. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Donald Pratt and John Leroy Davis, the latter the father of her children, and two sons, Johnny Glenn Davis and Jimmy Lynn Davis. Mrs. Pratt is survived by her two daughters, Connie and husband Lewis Davis of Chavies and Sharon Walker of Winchester. Her surviving brother is Bill Baker and wife Charlene of Bristol, Connecticut. She was the grandmother of Derrick Davis, Tammy Slaten and Janet Schultz and the great-grandmother of Rebecca Schultz, Michael Schultz, Justin Brewer and Caleb Slatten. Along with a host of other relatives and friends, she is also survived by one great-great-granddaughter, Madison Jean Brewer. Mrs. Pratt’s family received friends on Saturday evening, November 17 at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home where the funeral service was conducted on Sunday afternoon with James Noyes and J.P. Couch officiating. The burial was in the Jameson Cemetery in Hazard. Engle-Walker Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mae Stacy Jett Mae Stacy Jett of Hazard passed away on Sunday, November 18, at the Hazard A.R.H. Hospital. She was 84 years of age at the time of her death. The daughter of the late Colonel Stacy and Annie Combs, she was a member of the Upper Second Creek Baptist Church. She is survived by her children, Carol Torres, Bobbie Couch, Brenda Couch, Bill Jett, Roger Jett, Dwight Jett and Floyd Jett. Her surviving siblings are Winnie Walker, Wanda Brown, Blanche Stacy, Robert Stacy and Jack Stacy. The grandmother of seventeen grandchildren is also survived by a host of great and great-great-grandchildren. The family received friends on Tuesday evening, November 20 at Maggard’s Mountain View Chapel where the funeral service was conducted on Wednesday morning with the Rev. Densmore Goodson and Rev. Danny Stacy officiating. At the time of her death, she was 57 years of age. She was the daughter of Goldie Hoskins Hamblin and the late Harrison Hamblin. Along with her father, she was preceded in death by her sister, Loretta Couch and her brother, Carl Hamblin. Along with her mother, a resident of Slayden, Tennessee, she is survived by her siblings, Herbie Hamblin and wife Leann and Charles Hamblin and wife Elma, all residents of Busy, James Harrison Hamblin and wife Barbara, Earnest Couch, Jr. and wife Verlia, Earl Couch and wife Edna and Rosetta Feltner and husband Carter, all residents of Lexington, Brenda Proctor and husband Mike and Linda Miles and husband Doyle, all residents of Slayden, Tennessee, Lois Tucker of Jeffersonville, Indiana and Audrey French of Georgetown, Indiana. Cundiff passed away on Wednesday, November 21 at her home on the Left Fork Maces Creek Road, Viper. At the time of her death, she was 88 years of age. Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by her father, Bill “Ryle” Adams, her mother, Susie Hammonds, two sons, Ronnie and Jerry, her brothers, Dewey, Farmer, Fred and Herman and her sisters, Eva, Bertha and Frances. Mrs. Cundiff is survived by her six daughters, Yvonne and husband Ronnie Noe of Booneville, Indiana, Annette Nickles of Alexandria, Kentucky, Ruby and husband Gene Pool of Avon, Illinois, Gail and husband Dean Campbell of Viper, Jene and husband Gary of Jeff and Vicki and husband Lindon of Ary. Her surviving sons are Fred Cundiff, Jr. and wife Linda of Roseville, Illinois, Calbert Cundiff and wife Katie of Calhoun, Georgia, Harry Cundiff of Latonia, Kentucky, and Ike Cundiff and wife Chris of Abington, Illinois. Along with her twenty-nine grandchildren, Mrs. Cundiff is survived by a host of great and great-great-grandchildren as well as other relatives and friends. The family entrusted all arrangements to the staff at Maggard Brothers Funeral Home. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Joseph Monroe Sheperd Joseph Monroe Sheperd, the husband of Angela Marie Brock Shepherd of Rooks Road, London, was killed in a construction job accident in Middlesboro on Wednesday, November 21. He was 31 years of age at the time of his death. Along with his wife, he is survived by his parents, Merrell and Carolyn Combs Sheperd, his son Nicholas Monroe Sheperd, his stepsons, Stacey, Jared and C.J. all of London. His surviving brothers are Mark Anthony Merrell Sheperd of London, Michael Anthony Sheperd of Shepherdsville and Timothy Buddy Sheperd of Slemp. A native of Hazard, he was the son of Janet Evans Caudill and Danny Kay Caudill, Sr. He was preceded in death by a brother, William Caudill and one daughter, Danielle Caudill. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Ann Brummett. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Combs and husband Billy Johnson of Stanton, her brother, Freddie Brummett and wife Teresa of Viper and her five sisters, Jody and husband Larry Hayes, Betty Halcomb, Barbara and husband Jerry Asher and Kathy Brummett, all of Viper and Pam Combs of Williamsburg. At the time of her death, she was 78 years of age. A homemaker who enjoyed gardening and fishing, Mrs. Jones was a devoted member of the Petrey Memorial Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Newt and Mandy Cole Church, her husband, Mike Ostapchuk, her sister, Loeva Young and her niece, Christine Wells. Mrs. Jones is survived by her son, Mike Ostapchuk of Louisville, her daughter, Vena and husband Hubert Caudill of Georgetown, her siblings, Roscoe Church, Bethel Church, Abner Church, Ewell Slaven, Corbett Slaven, Hazel McCartney and Shirley Slaven. Hospital. He was retired from General Motors where he had been employed for over 30 years. The son of the late Henry and Maggie Fraley Back, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Pearlie Engle Back and two sons, Michael and Lonnie. Mr. Back is survived by his daughters, Emily Salley and Janice Misner, his son, James Back and a special sister-in-law, Vickie (Felly) Merritt. Along with a host of special nieces, nephews, other family and friends, he is also survived by his grandchildren, Maggie Everidge, Shannon Salley, Carrie Baker, Julie Salley and Rebekah Neace. H. Medical Center. At the time of his death, he was 56 years of age. The life-long resident of Perry County, he was affiliated with and attended the Butterfly Church of the Living God. Retired from the Kentucky Department of Mines and Minerals, he had been a Mine Inspector. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting. Preceded in death by his father, the Rev. Denver Eversole and his son, Christopher Darrell Eversole, he is survived by his mother, Rose Eversole, his wife, Linda Eversole, his sons, David and wife Amanda Eversole and Brain Eversole and his daughter, Donielle Eversole, all resident of Busy. He is also survived by his brother, Mike and wife Brenda Eversole of Hazard and his sister, Diane and husband Jimmy Grigsby of Busy. Along with a host of other relatives and friends, he is also survived by a host nieces and nephews. At the time of her death, the native of Black Mountain, Virginia, was 89 years of age. Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Curtis S. and Della S. Elkins Combs and three brothers, Tilton, Blaine and Pearl Combs. Mrs. Herald was retired from Martin’s Department Store. Mrs. Herald’s surviving children are John Curtis Herald and wife Carol of Ohio, James B. Herald of Vicco, Tommy R. Herald and wife Diana of Indiana, Nena Herald of Vicco and Bethany Adams and husband Richard of Sassafras. She was the grandmother of six granddaughters and great-grandmother of nine. She is also survived by a host of other relatives and friends. A homemaker, the life-long resident of Perry County was affiliated with the Krypton Brethren Church. She is survived by her children, Paul Ray Napier, Conley Napier and wife Wilma and Danny Napier, all residents of Hazard, Pauline and husband Cager Baker of Gays Creek and Gloria and husband Clarence Colwell of Bulan. She is also survived by her two brothers, Edgar Chandler of Hazard and Arnold B. Chandler of Krypton. Along with a host of other relatives and friends, she is survived by her sixteen grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren.
