JUST POSTING THE OBITUARY ON BURLEIGH BREWER FROM THE DAYTON (OH) DAILY NEWS 10/18/07 Burleigh Brewer, 86, of Beavercreek, OH, died peacefully on October 17, 2007 after an extended battle with lung cancer. He is survived by his loving wife Lois (nee Lambert), daughter Loraine (Terry) Garner of Milwaukee, WI, and sister Clara Mercer of Gainesville, FL. He is preceded in death by daughter Nadine (Paul) Seroka of Greenwich, CT, parents Daniel and Eliza Brewer of Hazard, KY, and six other brothers and sisters. Born in Hazard, KY, Burleigh left home at age 13 to attend secondary school and college at Berea College. He enlisted in the US Army, attained the rank of Technical Sergeant, and served bravely in the 39th Infantry in the World War II campaigns in Northern Africa, Normandy, the European Theater of Operations and Battle of the Bulge, earning the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart with three oak leaf clusters. Mr. Brewer's war remembrances have been chronicled in the Hazard Herald, and have been recorded for the Veterans History Project for the US Library of C! ongress. Mr. Brewer was a member of American Legion Post 763 and served as Commander of VFW Post 8312 in Beavercreek, and was inducted into the Military Order of the Cootie, the honor legion of the VFW. His many hours of volunteer service helped ensure the development and installation of the Beavercreek Veterans Memorial. The family will greet friends at the Tobias Funeral Home Beavercreek Chapel, 3970 Dayton-Xenia Road, on October 19, 2007 from 6 to 8 PM. Funeral services will be held on October 20 at 10:00 AM at Mount Zion Church, 22 S. Fairfield Road, Beavercreek. Military burial will follow at Valley View Memorial Gardens, 170 N. Valley Road, Xenia, OH. Mr. Brewer's family wish to express their gratitude to the staff of the VA Medical Center Hematology/Oncology and Radiation Therapy departments, the Hospice of Dayton, and their many friends at Mount Zion Church for their compassionate care during Burleigh's illness.
