    3. Can someone help me get straightened out on Sarah Couch d/o John and Mary Polly Couch Campbell? This e-mail shows me a third spouse for her. I have a Moses Combs, James Lewis, and Hardy Williams. Where have I gotten so confused on this one? Thanks, Sue ----- Original Message ----- From: Fay Keith<mailto:[email protected]> To: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, June 18, 2008 12:00 PM Subject: Re: [KYPERRY] New documented Couch/ Campbell marriage Dec. 1783Orange Co NC I know you didn't ask me, but Martin (my ancestor) was a son of John Couch and Elizabeth James... geeze my grandmother Lewis b. 1868 knew that. Another of my Lewis ancestors is known to have gone to NC to visit his Boone kinfolk... that was William the son of James T Lewis, and Sarah 'Sallie' Couch, who was a daughter John Couch b. 1750 and Mary Polly Boone. If this isn't a connection I don't know what would be. Like I said before I don't have actual paper proof of what I'm saying but I believe the proof is out there somewhere .. it's just in hiding. 1. Re: [KYPERRY] Boone, Campbell & Couch marriages.

    3. I'd love to know how to de-bunk bad info off the net too... such as my GG-grandfather Thomas 'Anse' Couch (I know on the net it says Alfred) (m. Elizabeth Campbell) as being the son of Martin Couch... just isn't so according to Thomas death certificate which names his father as (looks like) James Couch to me, but definately isn't Martin. I'm not sure who James' father was but a James and Martin Couch are mentioned in one of the Dickey Diaries as being brothers. Also a James and Marton Couch is found listed living side by side in the 1810 Washington Co. Va. census, then in 1820 a James and Martin Couch were found listed in 1820 Clay Co Ky census, . In 1820 James Couch was living between Martin Couch and William Harding. Williams', Lewis', Pennington's, Bowling's, Davidson's, and Fry's were also found living in the area. Sarah (Campbell) Baker interview; Wooton, July 22, 1898: John J Dickey Dairy, roll 3, page # 2436-2437: I was born in Perry County, Kentucky in 1824. My father was born in 1800. (the dairy spells the previous as Cambell but I believe that an error jfBurke). He was the son of John Campbell who emigrated from New River, North Carolina. I do not know when. His wife was Polly Couch, his brothers-in-law Martin and James came with him, also his brother William, who went to Indiana after I was 17 years old. None of his children were married when he came here. He was poor and came to better his condition. Some argue that because Sarah says that James and Martin were brother-in-laws, insted of half brother-in-laws, to her father that it proves that they were full brothers to Polly. Not necessarily so... my husband had a whole slew of half brothers and sisters from both his mother and father and I never once heard him refer to them as "half" brothers or half sisters when talking about them in general. Also to make this a bit more interesting (I've been waiting a long time to be able to say this). Thomas 'Anse' Couch (m. Elizabeth Campbell) has been proved to be the same 'Anse' Couch that is mentioned in the Up Cutshin, Down Greasy book. It has been proved by the death certificate of one of his sons... the death certificate of John Couch (m. Sally Shepherd) named his parents as Thomas Couch and Elizabeth Campbell... then my gg-grandfather Elihue Couch named Thomas Couch and Elizabeth Campbell as his parents on one of his marriage liscense.. plus Perry Co births also show his parents as Thomas Couch and Elizabeth Campbell. These documents prove that Elihue 'Lihu' and ole John Couch of "Up Cutshin, Down Greasy" are indeed brothers. Thomas was another of the brothers mentioned in the book... haven't proved him on paper, but my mom remembered him, and we found his gravestone in the Piney Fork Cemetery on Leatherwood in Perry Co. Ky. He is buried along with his first wife Mary, and two of his children, and not 50 feet from my g-grandparents, Elihue 'Lihu' and Mary Ann Burns Couch. Sorry if this bursts someone's bubble, but I do have that so sacred paper trail from myself to James Couch b. Bet. 1780 - 1790. Whether my ggg-grandfather James is the same James Couch that traveled with Martin Couch I do not know. I suspect he was since I found no other James in the area at that time, but I have no paper to prove that... maybe someday. 2. Fay, Your last sentence is so true for many of our families without a lot of paper documentation. Thank you for stating your position on this debate. Hopefully definitive answers will come in the future. While we're talking about this family, I have another question for you: Juder Lewis (s/o Isaac Lewis & Phoebe Couch) married Abby Couch. The annotation for the 1870 Perry County census (at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kyperry3/1870perrycensusmaggardprct.html) states Abby is the d/o Martin & Sarah Hall Couch, but I'd say she's considerably too young to be their daughter (Abby was b abt 1846, Martin & Sarah in 1784 & 1785, respectively). Do you have her as d/o someone else, perhaps as Martin & Sarah's granddaughter? Thanks, Dona Ritchie In a message dated 6/18/08 11:01:18 AM, [email protected] writes: > I know you didn't ask me, but Martin (my ancestor) was a son of John > Couch and Elizabeth James... geeze my grandmother Lewis b. 1868 knew > that.  Another of my Lewis ancestors is known to have gone to NC to > visit his Boone kinfolk... that was William the son of James T Lewis, > and Sarah 'Sallie' Couch, who was a daughter John Couch b. 1750 and > Mary Polly Boone. 3. I know you didn't ask me, but Martin (my ancestor) was a son of John Couch and Elizabeth James... geeze my grandmother Lewis b. 3. Vic, I believe you and Dave and Mary are wrong in your theories of the John Couch's of NC... I believe our John Couch b. 1750 did marry Mary Polly Boone and then Elizabeth James Campbell. As to John divorcing Elizabeth and marrying Mary Patterson I don't think so, even though someone has put a gravestone in a cemetery in Perry Co that says Mary Patterson Couch. I cannot prove what I am saying, but neither can you guys. It might sound good when you put it together like that but it is still speculation and I think we have had enough speculation (told as truth) in our Couch family for way too long... why don't we all just be honest and say 'I think' and not cause any more confusion. A note from David says: I asked Ruth Couch to assist me in researching your John Couch (born: ca. 1750). Ruth and I have spent a number of hours and have come up with a theory and some conclusions. I have attached a draft of our theory. Most of it isn't theory any longer, because Ruth went through boxes of paper records she has collected since the 1960's. We have come to the conclusion that John Couch had only one wife, Mary Polly Boone. Notice how many times he uses the word "theory"... and it is still just that... a "theory: Hope I didn't offend anyone, especially you Vic, but I for one am not buying it.
